Introduction
The Sorcerer class offers a range of enjoyable and viable builds with different elemental magic for effective leveling. Pick a leveling build based on performance to speed up the process, or choose the leveling build that matches the endgame build you intend to play for an easier transition between guides. The following list ranks the leveling builds in order of highest recommendation and provides links to each guide.
- The Chain Lightning Sorcerer is the top-recommended leveling build. The Mana-efficiency of Chain Lightning with Recharging Aspect and a simple plastyle make this build a good choice for beginner players.
- The Firewall Sorcerer excels at killing large groups of enemies with Damage Over Time. Firewall, along with the newly added Familiar, deals the majority of stacking burn damage and synergizes with Combustion.
- The Incinerate Sorcerer is another viable burning build for leveling. Incinerate is channeled to stack high single-target damage against bosses and pierces to clear groups of enemies. This build becomes extremely effective if Flamethrower’s Aspect is found.
- The Arc Lash Sorcerer is an alternative option for a melee playstyle. Arc Lash is a Basic Skill that deals decent Area-of-Effect damage without any Mana cost.
- The Fireball Sorcerer shoots explosive projectiles effective at clearing groups of enemies. Fireball excels at Area-of-Effect damage, especially with it equipped into the Enchantment slot. Hydra supplements the build with single-target damage for tough bosses or elites.
- The Ice Sorcerer is an option for players wanting to use ice magic. Engage enemies by shooting Ice Shards from a distance, or get up and close to unleash frosty havoc with Frost Nova.
If you are already Level 60, choose an endgame guide from the Rogue Builds Page.
General Leveling Tips
Hellbreach Dungeons and Helltides are an extremely good way to level any character, alt character, or seasonal character. You can level from 1 to 60 in just a couple of hours and get a lot of experience, gold, crafting materials, boss items, and even legendary gear early on!
The recommended World Difficulty to level in is Normal or Hard. Normal difficulty features the smoothest leveling experience, while Hard difficulty can be rewarding if you can still kill enemies quickly. Normal difficulty is the better choice for new players to learn the game and its mechanics. You can always increase the difficult later as you progress your character.
In Vessel of Hatred, Strongholds have been revamped to offer a significant experience boost on your first completion. Clearing Strongholds across the various zones also contributes to renown if you haven’t finished it yet, making them an efficient way to progress.
Check the Season Checklist for some valuable tips and tricks for Season 6 of Diablo 4.
Getting a mount is an essential step in your leveling journey, and you should save your explorations of the world (such as for obtaining Altars of Lilith or unlocking all waypoints) until after you get it. For more details, read our mount guide.
Mana, Sorcerer’s Class Resource
Sorcerers use Mana as their primary resource, which is a magical energy that can be consumed to cast skills. Mana regeneration replenishes your Mana pool over time and can be increased through gear or skills.
Enchantments
Sorcerers in Diablo 4 have a unique class mechanic known as Enchantments. This system allows players to add additional effects to their selected skills and offers customization options to the Sorcerer class.
Two different Enchantment Slots are available. The first slot unlocks after completing the Legacy of the Magi class questline that becomes available at Level 15, while the second slot unlocks at Level 30. Any Skill except Ultimates can be equipped into the Enchantment Slots.
Ranking up a skill can increase the effect of its Enchantment. Enchantment Master can be utilized to empower Enchantments by 20%.
Secondary Class Mechanics
Crackling Energy
Sorcerers can create Crackling Energy (little balls of lightning) through the use of some skills, either actively or by placing specific skills in an Enchantment slot. For example, Spark, when put in an Enchantment Slot, has a chance to form crackling energy when killing enemies. Once the Crackling energy is formed, it will periodically damage nearby enemies when picked up.
Elemental Shields
The Sorceress is the only class that is able to create elemental Shields and Armor (called Barriers). Defensive Skills such as Ice Armor and Flame Shield protect the Sorceress and provide resistance against damage.
Teleport
Teleport allows the caster to instantly move to a targeted location. This skill is useful for both offensive and defensive purposes, allowing you to quickly move around the battlefield and evade danger or close in on enemies.
Sorcerer Weapons and Restrictions
The Sorceress can equip Daggers, Wands, Maces, and Staves. A Focus can be equipped as an Off-hand.
Sorcerer Skills and Talents
This section provides an overview of the main Skill categories for the Sorcerer class. For more details, check the Sorcerer Skills Page and/or the Passive Skills Page.
Basic Skills
Basic Skills are spammable skills which usually cost no Mana and are not very powerful.
The Basic Skills for the Sorcerer are Frost Bolt, Fire Bolt, Arc Lash, and Spark.
Core Skills
These are some of the most recognizable Sorcerer skills in any build. While Core Skills have no cooldown, their most significant drawback is their Mana cost. Core Skills can be enhanced by a variety of Legendary Aspects.
The Core Skills for the Sorcerer are Frozen Orb, Ice Shards, Fireball, Incinerate, Charged Bolts, and Chain Lightning.
Defensive Skills
Defensive Skills boost the defensive capabilities of the Sorcerer, such as with a Barrier or Crowd Control.
The Defensive Skills for the Sorcerer are Flame Shield, Ice Armor, Teleport, and Frost Nova.
Conjuration Skills
Conjuration Skills include the summons of the Sorcerer. Summons can assist by dealing damage on their own or providing beneficial effects.
The Conjuration Skills for the Sorcerer are Ice Blades, Hydra, Lightning Spear, and Familiar.
Mastery Skills
The Sorcerer becomes a master of the elements to deal massive Area-of-Effect damage.
The Mastery Skills for the Sorcerer are Blizzard, Meteor, Firewall, and Ball Lightning.
Ultimate Skills
Ultimate Skills are powerful skills that have a significant impact but with a long cooldown. Only 1 Ultimate Skill can be allocated at a time, and they cannot be used in Enchantment Slots.
The Ultimate Skills for the Sorcerer are Deep Freeze, Inferno, and Unstable Currents.
Dismount Skill
While mounted, the Sorceress has access to a unique Dismount Skill to Freeze enemies in their path.
Sorcerer Attributes
The four core attributes benefit each of the six classes in slightly different ways. Here are their effects on the Sorcerer:
Attribute | Effect 1 | Effect 2 | Effect 3 |
---|---|---|---|
Strength | 1 Armor per point | ||
Intelligence* | 12,5% Skill Damage per 100 points | 2,5% All Resistances per 100 points | |
Willpower | 3% Resource Generation per 100 points | 10% Healing Received per 100 points | 25% Overpower Damage per 100 points |
Dexterity | 2% Critical Strike Chance per 100 points | 1% Dodge Chance per 100 points |
*Intelligence is considered the primary attribute for Sorcerer, as it multiplies all damage (1% increased Skill Damage for every 8 primary core stat).
In-game Activities
Finish the storyline to unlock the various endgame activities in Diablo 4. Follow the yellow-marked quests to find progress your way through.
After finishing the main storyline, the game becomes open-ended. The following sections provide a quick list of the activities you should do, in approximate order.
Tree of Whispers
The Tree of Whispers, located in Hawezar, rewards you for completing bounties found all over the game world. These are generally profitable activities that reward you with experience and items. They can be completed while doing other events and activities in a zone.
The Tree of Whispers is also your first source of Nightmare Sigils, used to activate Nightmare Dungeons. They are not guaranteed to drop, so keep turning in Whispers of the Dead until it appears.
Nightmare Dungeons
Nightmare Dungeons are part of the main endgame activity in Diablo 4. Once you receive your first Nightmare Sigil from the Tree of Whispers, you can start clearing these dungeons. Nightmare Sigils continue to drop in Nightmare Dungeons, so you should never run out.
Nightmare dungeons are an essential part of the endgame (since their difficulty has a lot of potential for increase), providing you with a challenge in return for which you can receive great item rewards. Nightmare dungeons are also one of the best way to gather Masterworking materials to upgrade your gear.
Helltides
Helltides appear in any World Difficulty at set locations within a zone, taking over large swathes of land for one hour before resetting. During this time, monsters killed in the affected area drop a special temporary currency that can be used to unlock chests found inside the Helltide area. Additionally, in higher difficulty, Helltides become even more deadly, with higher monster density and better loot drops from defeating enemies and opening chests.
Participating in Helltides is highly recommended. They are a good source for obtaining Forgotten Souls, a crafting material required to enchant Ancestral items at the Occultist. Enchanting items to replace an undesirable property is key to optimizing your gear.
Complete Renown in All Zones
If you are new to Diablo 4, we recommend you first complete the remaining Renown stages in all of the zones.
Although Renown bonuses provide some Skill and Paragon Points, character power grows faster from leveling and finding gear upgrades. Completing Renown can be quite time-consuming, so you should delay it until you are well-geared.
All Renown rewards persist between Seasons and new characters. So the “Renown grind” will only have to be done once.
Legion Events and World Bosses
Legion events and World Bosses are marked on the map. They are worthwhile activities to engage in since they reward potentially good items, as well as Obols.
Additionally, legion events also offer good experience. Simply go to the marked area on the map and join other players in killing the enemies.
The Pit
The Pit is another type of endgame content, similar to Diablo 3’s Greater Rifts, which can be entered through a portal that is opened by a pillar located in Cerrigar. It is also the way to level up the Glyphs that are inserted into your Paragon board, which is crucial for increasing character power.
After reaching Torment 1, you will receive a priority quest to unlock The Pit. Upon completion, you will unlock the possibility for Runeshards to drop from endgame content such as Whisper Caches, Helltides, and Nightmare Dungeons. Opening a pit portal requires one Runeshard.
The Pit has hundreds of tiers of difficulty, and the current highest tier you can unlock is Level 150.
Infernal Hordes
The Infernal Hordes is a wave-based endgame activity, first introduced in Season 5. To face the Infernal Hordes and enter the Realm of Hatred, you need an Infernal Compass, which can be acquired through various endgame activities such as defeating endgame bosses, Helltides, Whispers, Nightmare Dungeons, and so on. Infernal Compasses will scale in function of your World Difficulty.
Kurast Undercity
Kurast Undercity, introduced in the Vessel of Hatred expansion, is a timed dungeon that offers you a multi-floor challenge designed for fast-paced action and great rewards. To unlock Undercity, you need to reach Level 20, after purchasing the expansion, and summon the Spirit Flame in the Nahantu region.
Inside the Undercity, you will have limited time to defeat enemies, gather Attunement for better rewards, and face off against a District Boss. Spirit Beacons on each floor help generate additional enemies for farming Attunement. Completing a Spirit Beacon event will boost your movement speed and reduce cooldowns. Make sure to target the Affflicted monsters to add up a few seconds to the timer on each floor and get at least Rank 1 Attunement before facing the end boss. Kurast Undercity is an efficient spot to farm specific gear and gain experience using the Tributes and Bargain system.
