BiS Gear for Protection Paladins

Welcome to our Gear and BiS Page for Protection Paladin for The War Within Season 1. Check this page to learn everything you need to know about gearing a Protection Paladin, including the BiS Gear from all sources, Raiding, and Mythic+, information on the best Trinkets, Tier Sets, and much more.

Generally speaking, you will prioritize an item level upgrade over an "optimal" item at a lower item level as your survival is heavily reliant on Strength and Stamina. If you have a choice on the same item level, the alternative will likely, in generic circumstances, not make a difference defensively. We recommend just simming the choice and doing whatever helps you do more damage.

There are exceptions to this rule and encounter specific situations where a stat is massively devalued. You should keep an eye on the raid encounter guides to be aware of this. Similarly, certain Mythic+ key levels and dungeons require a slightly different gearing path. We linked the related guides below, but generally, we will add a note here as well:

Raiding Trinket Tier List Mythic+ Trinket Tier List

Raid Trinket Tier List for Protection Paladin

This Trinket Tier List is for trinkets that are used for Single Target/Raiding Purposes.

3.1.

S-Tier

  • Ara-Kara Sacbrood Icon Ara-Kara Sacbrood — This is the best trinket available for Protection Paladin right now. It has passive haste, and the passive Strength proc will pretty much always be active with 1 to 3 stacks at any given time.
3.1.

A-Tier

  • Foul Behemoth's Chelicera Icon Foul Behemoth's Chelicera — Puts a DoT on the target for 20 seconds. Each time you attack the target, you heal slightly. If this overheals, your maximum health increases. For Mythic raiding scenarios this trinket is exceptionally powerful for progression raiding as you can use it on the boss when you are not the active tank and gain more maximum health for the rest of the fight!
  • Skyterror's Corrosive Organ Icon Skyterror's Corrosive Organ — This trinket can provide a notable increase to your damage output in single target scenarios, on encounters with adds you may want to plan your uses of the trinket to gain more from it.
  • Mark of Khardros Icon Mark of Khardros — A strength stat stick with Mastery on use.
  • Oppressive Orator's Larynx Icon Oppressive Orator's Larynx — The stacking strength buff on this trinket, which is nearly always active and an on use of a decent amount of Shadow damage.
3.1.

C-Tier

  • Mad Queen's Mandate Icon Mad Queen's Mandate — Execute damage trinket. This will be beneficial on some Raid encounters on farm such as Broodtwister Ovinax.
  • Treacherous Transmitter Icon Treacherous Transmitter — This trinket will command you to move to a portal to get the effects of it. It can be quite annoying to find a good moment to do it, and the payoff is not the best. It doesn't line up with Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath consistently.
  • Sikran's Endless Arsenal Icon Sikran's Endless Arsenal — This trinket rotates through three different stances with different effects and passives based on the stance.
    • Stance - Surekian Barrage Icon Stance - Surekian Barrage deals damage to everything in front of you. The passive gives you a stacking speed buff while you stand still for the next time you move.
    • Stance - Surekian Flourish Icon Stance - Surekian Flourish applies a large DoT to your target. The passive effect while holding the weapon grants you a notable amount of parry and avoidance.
    • Stance - Surekian Decimation Icon Stance - Surekian Decimation deals damage to everything in a line in front of you. The passive allows you to deal 20% bonus damage to shields.
3.1.

D-Tier

  • Ovi'nax's Mercurial Egg Icon Ovi'nax's Mercurial Egg — Gain Strength while standing still. Gain your highest secondary stat while moving. When one is increasing in value the other is decreasing. Very annoying to use without proper planning.
3.1.

Defensive-Tier

  • Swarmlord's Authority Icon Swarmlord's Authority — This trinket gives you a small stacking absorb shield. The on-use gives you more absorption with a delay, you will need to plan this in advance. This can be beneficial on encounters with frequent large damage events such as Broodtwister Ovinax on Mythic.
  • Silken Chain Weaver Icon Silken Chain Weaver — This trinket provides an on demand absorb shield and reduces attack speed of all enemies in front of you. The only downside of this trinket is that it only drops in delves which means you would need to get it from a Tier 8 Delve Map or your Great Vault for it to be powerful enough to use over other options.
  • Throngus's Finger Icon Throngus's Finger — This will provide you with a large amount of Dodge every minute, which can be defensively powerful. However, this can only trigger once per minute, and you are not in control of when it will trigger. It could trigger at the end of a trash pack and not be available for the next one.
  • Ceaseless Swarmgland Icon Ceaseless Swarmgland — Purely random proc for a damage reduction. The proc rate is not often enough to justify using it, but it is a good stepping stone to another better trinket.
  • Refracting Aggression Module Icon Refracting Aggression Module — This trinket provides you with an absorb shield when you taunt every minute. In Raiding scenarios this is not worth it at all as you have enough cooldown coverage from your base toolkit. If you try to game the trinket to get the absorb on cooldown you may encounter issues with the boss becoming taunt immune!
4.

Mythic+ Trinket Tier List for Protection Paladin

This Trinket Tier List is for trinkets that are used for AoE Purposes in M+/Delves/Raiding.

3.1.

S-Tier

  • Ara-Kara Sacbrood Icon Ara-Kara Sacbrood — This is the best trinket available for Protection Paladin right now. It has passive haste, and the passive Strength proc will pretty much always be active with 1 to 3 stacks at any given time.
3.1.

A-Tier

  • Skarmorak Shard Icon Skarmorak Shard — A Mastery on use trinket which provides you with passive Mastery when something nearby dies. This is quite powerful in Dungeon/Delve situations as you will have stacks of this Mastery buff when going into a new pack of enemies all of the time.
  • Oppressive Orator's Larynx Icon Oppressive Orator's Larynx — The stacking strength buff on this trinket, which is nearly always active and an on use of a decent amount of Shadow damage.
3.1.

B-Tier

  • Overclocked Gear-a-Rang Launcher Icon Overclocked Gear-a-Rang Launcher — A strong AoE damage trinket. Send it while being at maximum melee range, it hits enemies twice if you do so.
  • Skyterror's Corrosive Organ Icon Skyterror's Corrosive Organ — AoE damage trinket.
3.1.

C-Tier

  • Mark of Khardros Icon Mark of Khardros — Another Mastery trinket which provides benefits on use, however in Dungeon/Delve situations Skarmorak Shard Icon Skarmorak Shard would perform better as you will be gaining more benefits over the course of the Dungeon/Delve as it provides you with Mastery when something dies.
  • Spare Meat Hook Icon Spare Meat Hook — A strong single damage on use trinket. Many dungeons have priority enemies in packs. Lowered to C Tier due to a 33% nerf in damage.
3.1.

Defensive-Tier

  • Swarmlord's Authority Icon Swarmlord's Authority — This trinket gives you a small stacking absorb shield. The on-use gives you more absorption with a delay, this effect scales with haste. Due to the low cooldown of the trinket it will be available on most groups of enemies.
  • Foul Behemoth's Chelicera Icon Foul Behemoth's Chelicera — This trinket will provide you with extra maximum health if you deal damage while at full health and the DoT is active on the target. However for Dungeon/Delve environments this buff changes to an absorb shield when you leave combat.
The frequency of the shield can line up with gaps in your cooldown plan but there are better options above in this list to solve that issue. Ignore this trinket.

Anything not listed above would be a stopgap until you get something better.

4.

"Simming" Yourself as a Protection Paladin

Throughout this page, we regularly refer to the importance of simming yourself on Raidbots, as it is an indispensable aspect of optimizing your character.

While we do offer generic sim charts for Trinkets, this should not be a replacement for simming. As they will neglect nuances such as two on-use trinkets, Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath timings or rotational changes that occur from using a trinket.

If you are new to simming and Raidbots, check out our detailed guide below.

5.

Best Crafted Items for Protection Paladin

To preface this, most plate embelishments were not testable on Beta. This page will be updated once more information is known in this regard.

Should you want to go ahead and craft items, we would recommend Everforged Greatbelt Icon Everforged Greatbelt and Everforged Vambraces Icon Everforged Vambraces with Elemental Focusing Lens Icon Elemental Focusing Lens.

6.

Protection Paladin Tier Set - Entombed Seraph's Radiance

With the launch of Season 1, Protection Paladins will be able to gain the bonuses from Entombed Seraph's Radiance:

  • Paladin Protection Season 1 2pc Icon Paladin Protection Season 1 2pcShield of the Righteous Icon Shield of the Righteous deals 10% increased damage and grants 3% damage reduction.
  • Paladin Protection Season 1 4pc Icon Paladin Protection Season 1 4pc — Casting a Holy Power ability increases the damage and healing you deal during your next Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath by 0.5%. This effect stacks.

PvP Gear Recommendations for Protection Paladin

Obtaining gear from rated PvP can be a powerful boost to your item level early in the season.

All of these items have Versatility on them.

If you are wanting to obtain PvP gear, we would advise doing Solo Shuffle as Retribution or Holy.

8.

Best Gear Upgrades for Protection Paladin

Completing end game activities in The War Within will reward you with Harbinger Crests and Valorstones. Once you have upgraded a slot to a certain item level, upgrading other items of that slot to that item level is free.

We recommend upgrading with the following priority list:

  • Your main hand weapon and shield.
  • Upgrade your trinkets.
  • Upgrade your lowest item level slots or use a Raidbots Droptimiser sim to evaluate what to upgrade next.
