1.

Addons for Arcane Mage

1.1.

ElvUI

ElvUI is a complete replacement for the default User Interface. It is a very popular UI addon for all levels of play, including the highest levels of play. It is very user-friendly and takes very little time to set up and master. It also comes already furnished with almost everything you need; unit frames, raid frames, minimap, buffs and debuffs, and much more. You can easily unlock and drag all the components around so your UI will look exactly the way you want it to. ElvUI is clean, easy to use, and a great starting point for your UI.

1.2.

Weak Auras

Weak Auras is the most important AddOn for players seeking to master their class and take their gameplay to new heights. If you aspire to do any Mythic raiding, this is the most powerful tool in your kit. Weak Auras allow you to display helpful visual cues anywhere on your screen, which enables you to play better. Most players use it to track their trinket procs, highlight on-screen displays of their most important cooldowns, or track the timers of boss mechanics. It is highly customizable and makes keeping track of your procs and cooldowns effortless. The drawback of Weak Auras is that it has a bit of a learning curve and is not the most user-friendly. Weak Auras allow you to import other players' data directly into their UI, however, and most players choose to simply import other people's Weak Auras rather than make their own. Weak Auras can be used to create just about anything you can imagine, as it is a LUA scripting tool (essentially an AddOn that creates other AddOns, in-game). This is by far the most essential AddOn for players looking to step into Mythic raiding.

Nowadays, WeakAuras are used by every raiding guild at practically all levels of play, and generally every patch there a new popular WeakAura packs for the new raid tier, with warnings and information for every boss fight. The same applies to Mythic+, where there are packs for every single dungeon.

1.3.

BigWigs (BW) or Deadly Boss Mods (DBM)

BigWigs and Deadly Boss Mods are both very popular boss mods. (DBM) out of the box is very flashy with a lot of sounds compared to Big Wigs, which for some people might be a pro, whereas for others a con. Both tend to have a lot of updates throughout a patch, and which one you use usually comes down to personal preference, but having at least one of them is critical in a raiding environment. Generally, guilds will ask everyone to use the same boss mod, so depending on the guild you might have to use a specific one.

1.4.

Plater

Plater is the Weakauras of nameplates. Plater is extremely customizable, and is the go-to nameplates addons for high-end play, especially in Mythic+, which often has a lot of enemies on your screen all with multiple various important things to track. If you want to push high Mythic+ keys, plater is a key addon to use.

1.5.

Details

Details is the go-to damage meter used by practically all players. It is very customizable, and can do a lot of things, including creating Weakauras based on events that happened in details, which can be useful if you want to make your own Weakauras. However, even if you do not need any of these advanced functionalities, it is a very reliable DPS meter.

1.6.

Extra AddOns

These AddOns are popular community addons that you might want to install, especially when considering group play.

1.6.1.

Mythic Dungeon Tools (MDT)

This is a key addon for high Mythic+ pushing. It allows you to plan dungeons ahead of time within the addon, see all the enemies in a dungeon, their abilities, health, and much more.

1.6.2.

Method Raid Tools (MRT)

This is a key addon for high-end raiding. It comes with a couple of key features, but one of the most important ones, and used by many guilds, is the ability to create notes that go up on the screen. These notes can contain all kinds of assignments, or information that is useful to have quickly available. Additionally, in high-end guilds, these notes are often also used in combination with Weakauras to create assignments that show up mid-combat for individual players.

Alongside the notes feature, the addon also has all kinds of other useful tools, like automatically marking certain enemies or players, cooldown tracking, and much more. If you are looking to step up your raiding game, this is a good addon to have, and most high end guilds will require you to have it.

Macros

2.1.

Generic Macros for Mages

Bear in mind when using any of the stopcasting macros that they will not interrupt the Global Cooldown. If you are still on GCD your cast will be canceled but the next ability will not go off until you are off GCD.

2.1.1.
  • #showtooltip
  • /stopcasting
  • /cast Blink

Pressing Blink Icon Blink will now cancel your current spellcast and causes you to immediately Blink. Note that this should not be used with Shimmer Icon Shimmer as it will unnecessarily cancel your current cast.

2.1.2.

1-Button Block

  • #showtooltip
  • /stopcasting
  • /cancelaura Ice Block
  • /cast Ice Block

Cancels your current cast and immediately puts you in Ice Block Icon Ice Block. Pressing Ice Block again will cancel the effect. Not recommended if you spam your buttons.

2.1.3.

Block Cancel

  • /cancelaura Ice Block

If you are a button spammer, you can put this on a separate keybind as your Ice Block Icon Ice Block, allowing you to cancel your Ice Block early if you so desire.

2.1.4.

Alter Time Cancel

  • /cancelaura Alter Time

You can use the above macro to cancel Alter Time Icon Alter Time if you do not want to be teleported back to the location/health where you were when you initially cast Alter Time.

2.1.5.

Mouseover Decurse

  • #showtooltip
  • /use [@cursor]Remove Curse

This will remove curses on whatever unit you are mousing over.

2.2.

Specific Macros for Arcane Mages

2.2.1.

1-Button Touch of the Magi + Follow up spell

  • /castsequence reset=5 Arcane Barrage, Touch of the Magi

This macro will cast Arcane Barrage Icon Arcane Barrage on the first press, followed by Touch of the Magi Icon Touch of the Magi on the second press. This macro is especially useful if you are close to your target and are trying to throw out an Arcane Barrage and apply Touch of the Magi before the Arcane Barrage lands, as this can be very quick when close to the target.
