Engineering in Cataclysm Classic remains a powerful profession still desired by many classes. In this guide we will go over all the different items players with Engineering may use, the easiest way to level Engineering, and the different options offered by each Engineering specialization.
Cataclysm Engineering Profession and Leveling Guide
Engineering various metals and stones to craft a wide array of items. Mining is a great complement to Engineering, as having Mining will allow you to farm the vast majority of materials you will need to both train and utilize Engineering for crafted item in the endgame. Due to the amount of bars used to craft items near max skill level, it can get extremely costly very quickly; having mining greatly mitigates this cost.
Training Engineering in Cataclysm
In Cataclysm, you no longer need to visit different trainers to learn new ranks of Engineering. Every trainer will now be able to each you all ranks in any major city.

Engineering Specializations in Cataclysm
Engineering specializations in Cataclysm are very minor, having little difference between the two. The main difference will be Big Daddy, making Goblin the ideal choice for maximizing damage.
Gnomish Engineering
To become a Gnomish Engineer, you will need to complete the quest Gnomish Engineering, this requires you to turn in:
- 6 × Mithril Tube
- 1 × Accurate Scope
- 2 × Advanced Target Dummy
Notable Gnomish Engineering Items
Gnomish Engineering mostly focuses on fun items, offering no real advantage in combat. Gnomish Gravity Well is the only new craft in Cataclysm, giving you a fun toy you can use or sell.
Goblin Engineering
To become a Goblin Engineer, you will need to complete the quest Goblin Engineering. This requires you to turn in:
- 20 × Big Iron Bomb
- 20 × Solid Dynamite
- 5 × Explosive Sheep

Goblin Engineering primarily focuses on explosives, being the better choice if you are trying to maximize your damage.

Changing Your Engineering Specialization in Cataclysm
In Cataclysm, you can easily swap your Engineering specialization between Goblin and Gnomish without needing to re-level the profession again. Simply speak with Narain Soothfancy in Tanaris, and for a fee of 150 gold, you can switch your specialization at will. After unlearning your current specialization, use the Soothsaying for Dummies to pick your new specialization.
Engineering Profession Bonus in Cataclysm
Engineering has many unique enchants, gadgets, and gizmos that improve your character in more ways that just raw stats. These gadgets are lost if you get rid of Engineering. In addition to the enchants below, Engineers can craft a handful of trinkets, helmets, and explosives to further improve their characters, making Engineering a powerful profession choice.

Engineering Tinker Enchants
In Cataclysm, all Engineering Tinker Enchants can be used along-side regular enchants, no longer requiring you to choose one or the other.
- Cardboard Assassin — Summons a target dummy that taunts nearby enemies.
- Grounded Plasma Shield — Damage absorption on use.
- Invisibility Field— Temporary invisibility with high chance to break.
- Quickflip Deflection Plates — Temporary armor on use.
- Spinal Healing Injector — Gives you a bottomless health potion.
- Synapse Springs — 480 Main Stat on use for 10 seconds.
- Tazik Shocker — Deals damage to target from range.
- Z50 Mana Gulper — Gives you a bottomless mana potion.
