Occuthar Encounter Guide: Strategy, Abilities, Loot
Occu'thar is the second boss that players can fight inside Baradin Hold in phase 3 of Cataclysm. Similar to Argaloth, Occu'thar acts as a catch-up gearing boss to help players get into raiding easier.
Role-Specific Tips for Occu'thar
DPS Tips
- Swap to the adds as soon as they spawn, killing them is your top priority.
- Be ready to move as soon as Focused Fire goes off.
Healer Tips
- Be mindful of each Searing Shadows cast as the tanks will need to swap after each.
- Be ready with any cooldowns or burst healing whenever the Eyes of Occu'thar spawn as a few will likely damage the raid.
Tank Tips
- Be ready to tank-swap after each Searing Shadows cast.
- Avoid being in front of the boss if you are not currently tanking.
Occu'thar Abilities
Strategy for Occu'thar
Occu'thar, much like the previous boss Baradin Hold boss Argaloth, is a rather simple fight with only a few mechanics to keep in mind. Following the picture, we want the raid to stack together behind Occu'thar, starting on either the blue or green circle. Whenever Occu'thar targets a player with Focused Fire, the entire raid simply moves from their current circle to the other circle. The raid will need to do this movement throughout the entire encounter, frequently moving from circle to circle to avoid taking damage.
Occu'thar will also spawn in dozens of Eyes of Occu'thar, which damage nearby players and explode for raid-wide Shadow damage after 10 seconds. Killing these quickly needs to be the priority for all DPS players as too many AoE blasts hitting the raid will result in a wipe.
Tanks will need to deal with Searing Shadows, a frontal-cone Shadow breath that deals 102375 to 107625 Shadow damage to all players hit and increases their Shadow damage taken by 100% for 30 seconds. Tanks will need to be ready to quickly swap after each Searing Shadows and quickly get into position to avoid being hit by two Searing Shadows in a row.
Occu'thar Loot
Occu'thar has a very large loot table with over 150 items he can possibly drop. The most desired gear will be the item level 378 PvE set piece gloves and legs he can drop for all classes, such as Balespider's Handwraps and Balespider's Leggings. Occu'thar can also drop PvP set piece gloves and legs like Ruthless Gladiator's Chain Gauntlets and Ruthless Gladiator's Chain Leggings; as well as various PvP cloaks ( Ruthless Gladiator's Drape of Meditation), boots ( Ruthless Gladiator's Boots of Alacrity), belts ( Ruthless Gladiator's Cord of Cruelty), trinkets ( Ruthless Gladiator's Emblem of Cruelty) and more.
