Meteor Wizard BiS Gear, Gems, and Paragon Points
Below, we detail the items and gems that you should use for your Meteor Wizard in Diablo 3 and why. We also list your paragon points and Kanai's Cube items. Updated for Patch 2.6.9 and Season 21.
Best in Slot Gear and Alternatives
The build incorporates the complete Firebird's Finery 6-piece bonus, taking
six of the seven available pieces and opening up the jewelry for the Endless Walk
set and its damage multiplication bonuses. The build can roll the vast majority
of set armor slots completely into toughness, dedicating Firebird's Breast
and
Firebird's Down entirely to the task, and splitting it in half with
Resource Cost Reduction on the
Firebird's Pinions and Crit Stats on
Firebird's Talons.
Meteor damage increase is possible on both the
Firebird's Plume and
Firebird's Tarsi, and you should seek it out on
both. Note that stacking Armor benefits you because of the balancing of sources
of mitigation, as All Resistance is already abundant on an Intelligence-based
character. Notice also the absence of crowd control immunity in the spec (it is
a non-Archon build), making Crowd Control Reduction secondary stats (ideally on
helm, but can also roll on jewelry) very beneficial.
Taking enough pieces to obtain the 6-piece bonus of the Firebird set naturally
opens a powerful offensive combo in the jewelry. One of the 2.4 reworks, the
Endless Walk set — The Compass Rose ring and
The Traveler's Pledge amulet — adds a unique mechanic that slowly
increases your damage by up to a 100% if you remain stationary, and drains it
away and increases your damage reduction while moving. Meteor Wizards share this
playstyle, alternating long distance movement to favorable monster density with
periods of stationary
Arcane Torrent channeling (see this build's skills page for more information). Your second
ring slot should be taken by
Convention of Elements; the ring rotates
through all elements available to Wizards, providing a massive bonus to your
main damage skill during the Fire proc. You can notably alternate your second
ring slot for the additional protection of
Unity, coupled with
another on the follower plus an immortality relic for him (i.e.
Enchanting Favor). This will result in lesser damage output, but more
consistent Rift completion vs. the fishing-oriented CoE.
The best-in-slot belt for the build when pushing Greater Rifts is
Hergbrash's Binding. This legendary belt single-handedly allows for extended
periods of
Arcane Torrent channeling by vastly reducing its resource cost.
You will add to the belt's incentive to remain stationary with a thick-of-the-fight
protective bracer —
Ancient Parthan Defenders. Its unique property
triggers off the Freeze of
Halo of Arlyse
Frost Novas.
The remaining item slots — weapon and offhand — will be occupied
by dedicated channeling legendary items that enable the playstyle
interactions in the first place and increase the build's damage output.
Etched Sigil is a build-defining legendary source that augments and casts
equipped spenders for free (you purposefully limit yourself to
Meteor in
this case).
Deathwish is a pure damage increase, affecting your overall
damage (including
Etched Sigil casts) while channeling
Arcane Torrent.

Gems
Bane of the Trapped is a potent source of additional damage, as it is its
own multiplier in your total damage calculation. You will benefit from it
naturally, as Meteor Wizards tend to fight in melee range to maximize the
Firebird DoT uptime —
Bane of the Trapped procs itself with the level
25 property.
Taeguk is a rare hybrid of defense and offense among the legendary
gem options, and continued
Arcane Torrent channeling will ensure that your
stacks remain capped for a constant, well-rounded benefit.
Bane of the Powerful provides a 20% multiplicative damage increase after
killing an elite pack, as well as baseline 15% damage increase against, and
damage reduction from, elite enemies. The bonus duration upgrades at a steady
pace with gem levels, and is usually a good indication of your power — if
it falls off, you are past the limits of your current setup. Nevertheless, in the
highest tiers of Greater Rift progression, you will have to swap this slot out
for the stacking damage increase of
Bane of the Stricken.

Kanai's Cube
Your weapon and armor Cube slots will be taken by Meteor-dedicated
legendary powers. First, you have
The Grand Vizier augmenting the
Meteor's damage and cutting its resource cost in half. And second, you
have
Nilfur's Boast strengthening
Meteors even further and
empowering their capabilities in small-scale combat (very useful against Rift
Guardians).
The jewelry Cube slot is best taken by the crowd control king,
Halo of Arlyse, which will multiply the effectiveness of your
Ice Armor mitigation. As long as the requirements of the ring are met, it
will release a constant streak of
Frost Novas, unhindered by internal
cooldowns.
The Kanai's Cube can be used for much more than simply extracting Legendary powers from items. Please refer to our Kanai's Cube guide for more information.
