Introduction
The Alchemist is an important NPC throughout your adventures across Sanctuary. This guide covers the benefits of upgrading potions, crafting Elixirs, refining materials, or crafting Incense and consumables. Upgrading the character’s Healing Potions is very important, allowing you to improve the gameplay experience and progress further in the game.
How to Unlock the Alchemist
On a new character, you will have to complete a priority quest leading you to visit Veroka, the Alchemist in Kyovashad. In order to complete the quest, Weak healing potions will have to be upgraded into Tiny Healing Potion, for the price of a few Bundled Herbs.
Alchemists are located in any major city of each zone. They are indicated on the map by a mortar and pestle icon:
How to Upgrade Potions
As your character progresses, you have the ability to upgrade the Healing potion. Each upgrade enhances the Healing Vial’s ability to restore a greater amount of Life when it is used.
Make sure to visit the Alchemist in each main town and check for any new available upgrades whenever the character reaches a new level milestone. You can check out our Diablo 4 zones overview to quickly see all the main towns of each area.
In order to upgrade your Healing Potion, you will need Angelbreath. You can collect Angelbreath in Sanctuary, cellars and loot it from Tortured Gifts in Helltides or even Cache Rewards from the Tree of Whispers.

Craft Elixirs
Alchemists have the ability to brew various Elixirs, offering an experience boost and a stat boost for a duration of 30 minutes. Each Elixir requires a specific amount of gold and materials to craft, as the Alchemists require compensation for their services. These Elixirs can prove particularly valuable during World Boss fights or challenging high-end content.
As your character gains levels, it becomes possible to craft stronger versions of each Elixir, which provide greater bonuses. However, keep in mind that crafting these enhanced versions requires higher crafting costs.
Craft Incenses
Incenses function similarly to Elixirs, providing temporary bonuses to players. However, the key distinction is that incenses are particularly beneficial when you are part of a party, as the buffs they provide extend to the entire party. The first incense becomes available at Level 45, and only one incense can be active at a time.
Moreover, Incenses are categorized into different tiers known as types. It is important to remember that only one type of incense can be active simultaneously. However, this also creates an opportunity for players to use both a Type I, Type II and Type III Incense concurrently, as long as they are distinct types.
Below is a list of incenses and their respective bonuses:
