Introduction
Within Diablo 4, players can make use of the Purveyor of Curiosities, an NPC vendor that offers a distinctive gambling-style service for gear upgrading. Using Obols, you can buy gear for a specific slot. The item is generated randomly, with rarities ranging from Common to Uniques and even Mythic Uniques.
This guide will cover the advantages of visiting the Purveyor during town visits, in order to improve your gameplay through Item Power and Gear progression. We also have a general gear guide that can help you get a deeper understanding of the gear systems and mechanics in Diablo 4.
Gear System in Diablo 4How to find the Purveyor of Curiosities
After arriving in Kyovashad, within the Fractured Peaks, for the first time, you can immediately visit the Purveyor of Curiosities. The vendors’ location can be found by looking for a money bag icon on the map.
The Purveyor of Curiosities is available in every main town of each Zone, and serves as the equivalent of the Gambling Vendor in Diablo III and previous titles. This Vendor allows you to gamble for equipment by choosing a specific gear type without any knowledge of the item’s rarity until it is obtained.
Note that Obols, rather than gold, are required to purchase items from the Purveyor.
What are Murmuring Obols?
Unlike other NPCs, the Purveyor of Curiosities will not require any gold from you. Instead, this NPC will only accept Murmuring Obols, which are small, purple coins that can be found on the bottom right of the inventory, next to gold and red dust.
The Purveyor does not accept any other currency, so there will be no gambling without these coins. For an in-depth guide on how to farm, or rather how to ‘get’ Obols, please visit our dedicated Obols page:

After a certain amount of Obols has been accumulated, you can head to the Purveyor of Curiosities to try your luck at gambling for better gear.
The Purveyor of Curiosities provides an opportunity to obtain Legendary or Unique items that may be difficult to acquire through regular gameplay. This can be particularly useful for players who have had poor luck with item drops.
It is important to note that the gear received from gambling may vary in rarity, ranging from Common to Mythic Unique. While it still involves some degree of luck, gambling can be the best option to fill any gaps in gear that you may have.
Gear that was obtained through gambling, but that is not useful, can be sold or salvaged at the Blacksmith in exchange for gold or materials. This means that gambling can still be beneficial even if you are unlucky or require more gold. Check out our Blacksmith Guide for more information about how to salvage items.

Whispering Keys
An additional item available for purchase at the Purveyor of Curiosities is the Whispering Key.
These keys can be used to open specific chests that players may come across during their journey through Sanctuary, called Silent Chests.
Each key will unlock one Silent Chest and can be purchased for 10 Murmuring Obols. We recommend to always have at least one key on hand in case one of these chests is found while exploring the open world.
Chests can also spawn in areas where Helltide is active. Opening Silent Chests inside a Helltide zone will yield additional cinders.
