Introduction
In Diablo 4, there are 5 in-game currencies that serve one purpose: generating more gear by purchasing, upgrading, crafting, or gambling. These currencies can be obtained through different methods like progressing through the story and quests, killing enemies, opening treasure chests, participating in activities and even trading between players.
Gold, Obols, Red Dust, Pale Marks and Citadel Coins can be obtained in various ways, and each currency serves a distinct purpose. In this article, we will provide all the information you need to efficiently farm each currency in Diablo 4.
How to Farm Gold
Gold is the primary and most important currency in Diablo 4, used to buy items, upgrade gear, craft potions, and more. Here are some tips on how to farm gold efficiently:
- Kill enemies, loot corpses or treasures, complete events, dungeons, quests, and cellars to earn Gold.
- Sell gear to vendors instead of salvaging them at the Blacksmith. All gear sold at vendors will award Gold.
- Unlock renown rewards by completing various in-game activities to earn Gold.
- Trade with other players.
Tip: balancing salvaging and selling the gear you gather is important to generate Gold, which is as important as collecting crafting materials.
Gold Farming GuideHow to Farm Obols
Murmuring Obols are a special currency in Diablo 4 that can be used to gamble for gear or Whispering Keys at the Purveyor of Curiosities, a vendor found in towns throughout Sanctuary. Obols can only be obtained by completing outside events, which are random encounters that appear on the map, as well as from events inside Nightmare Dungeons and after completing levels within The Pit. Here are some tips on how to farm Obols effectively:
- Look for icons on the map that indicate outside events and head towards them.
- Complete the objectives of the event, which can vary from killing enemies, defending an area, escorting a caravan, solving a puzzle, etc.
- Collect the reward chest at the end of the event, which will contain Obols and other items.
- Repeat the process as many times as you can, as outside events are constantly spawning on the map.
- Nightmare Dungeons have a chance of containing events that will reward Obols after completion.
- Completing runs within The Pit also provides certain amounts of Obols, so you can optimize your farming while pushing tier levels of The Pit!
- If you are a new player: Interact with Altars of Lilith and unlock Renown rewards to increase the maximum carry capacity to 2500. You only have to do this one time! Once unlocked, the maxed capacity will carry over to other seasons, on all your characters.
How to Farm Red Dust
Red Dust is another interesting currency in Diablo 4 that can be used to purchase items from PvP vendors in Dry Steppes and Kehjistan. Red Dust is earned from Altars of Extraction by purifying Seeds of Hatred, which are obtainable in PvP zones. Here are some tips on how to farm Red Dust:
- Enter a PvP zone (the Fields of Hatred)
- Look for Seeds of Hatred on the ground or loot them from other players and monsters you kill.
- Find an Altar of Extraction and interact with it to start purifying your seeds.
- Defend the altar from other players who may try to interrupt your purification or steal your seeds.
- Collect your Red Dust after the purification is complete.
How to Farm Pale Marks
Pale Marks, introduced in Season 6 of Diablo 4, are a special currency tied to your progress with Mercenaries. Earn them by building Rapport through missions and tasks. Each Mercenary has 10 Rapport levels, and as you reach higher levels, you’ll collect Pale Marks.
The last level of Rapport is repeatable and allows you to collect more Pale Marks as you keep working with this Mercenary. These can be traded at the Mercenary Den, unlocking access to exclusive items and gear.

Mercenary GuideHow to Farm Citadel Coins
Citadel Coins are a unique currency tied exclusively to the Dark Citadel content in Diablo 4. You can earn them by completing runs in the multiplayer dungeon, which requires at least two players to navigate challenging puzzles and defeat powerful enemies.
Each week, you’ll receive a Weekly Cache containing Citadel Coins upon completing a run. Make sure to participate in at least one run weekly to collect this reward.
Citadel Coins can be used to purchase exclusive cosmetics, mounts, and items that offer buffs for future Dark Citadel runs, making them an essential resource for this endgame activity.
Dark Citadel GuideSummary
In Diablo 4, Gold, Obols, Red Dust, Pale Marks and Citadel Coins are the five main in-game currencies that you can use to buy, upgrade, craft, and trade for gear and other valuable items.
