What are Malignant Invokers?
NOTE: Make sure you complete the storyline on Tier 1 or 2 otherwise you will not receive the Invoker of Varshan Recipe and will not be able to make the Tier 3 or 4 versions of them on that character!
Malignant invokers are items that can be dropped by mobs or crafted at Cormond’s Workbench (one of many locations shown in the image below) after completing or skipping the campaign and starting on the Seasonal Quest line.
How to Use an Invoker
- Obtain an Invoker by looting or crafting one.
- Enter a Malignant Tunnel which matches the type of Invoker you have (for example, Brutal).
- The types are indicated both on the Invoker and on the Malignant Tunnel.
- Malignant Tunnels are marked with the teal Seasonal icon on the map.
- Kill all the monsters in the Tunnel, as well as the tunnel boss.
- Interact with one of the two Malignant Pustules (matching your Invoker type). This will consume your Invoker.
- Kill the boss that spawns and loot the Caged Heart.
Invokers are used at the end of Malignant Tunnels, after killing all of the Elite mobs and the Malignant Tunnel boss. After defeating the boss of the Tunnel, you will come across 2 Malignant Pustules on the ground. You must have the Invoker that matches the pustule type in your inventory (they will be under your Consumables tab) in order to activate it. You must choose which of the two you will activate as you only get to pick one of them.
Once you activate a Pustule, a powerful boss will spawn. After killing the boss, a Caged Heart of the corresponding type will then drop.
Below is what the the Pustules at the end of a Malignant Tunnel look like in game.
Where Do I get Malignant Invokers?
After you have completed the first parts of the Seasonal Quest line you can get Malignant Invokers in two ways.
Firstly, they become a drop that any Malignant Monster in the game can drop.
Secondly, and more importantly, you can craft them at Cormond’s Workbench. Each Malignant Invoker has a different Recipe and cost as shown below with there being a recipe to specifically craft each of the 3 basic Invokers (Vicious Malignant Invoker, Brutal Malignant Invoker, Devious Malignant Invoker) and a fourth option to craft an Uncertain Invoker which can be any of the 3 basics randomly, but also has a chance to be a Wrathful Malignant Invoker. Unless you get lucky and drop a Wrathful Malignant Invoker, this gamble will be the main way of acquiring them.
There is a fourth type of invoker that you will use to summon the Echo of Varshan called the Invoker of Varshan you get 1 for free when you complete the full seasonal story line along with the recipe to unlock the ability to craft them at Cormond’s Workbench.
To use the Invoker of Varshan you need to find “the most powerful” Malignant Pustules at the end of a Malignant Tunnel inside a secret room. The entrance to the secret room is a wooden door with chains on it, and it appears as a dead end on the map. Keep an eye out for these wooden doors whenever you’re exploring Malignant Tunnel. Once you enter the secret room you will find the special pustule and be able to use the Invoker of Varshan on it to summon his Echo. He will drop 1-2 Caged Hearts and has a high likelihood of dropping Wrathful Hearts so for now this seems to be the best way to farm them.
There are 3 different Invokers of Varshan relating to which World tiers they can be used on, You start with the Invoker of Varshan and must use it in World Tier 1 or 2 and that unlocks the Foul Invoker of Varshan upon killing him, The Foul Invoker of Varshan must be used on World Tier 3 and upon killing him you unlock the Tormented Invoker of Varshan which is used to summon him in World Tier 4.
Below we have images of each of the recipes for the 3 basic Invokers, the Uncertain Invoker, and the Invokers of Varshan.
