Welcome to the comprehensive guide for the Mighty ThrowMighty Throw Barbarian for Diablo 4! As we move into Diablo 4’s first expansion each class gets a new skill, and Mighty ThrowMighty Throw steps up to the plate to be the new kid in town for Barbarian. If you miss the old Diablo game’s “Throwbarian” style builds, then this is the build for you. Thanks to some new unique items, big damage, and a semi-ranged playstyle, this build brings all the fun of tossing tons of weapons around and crushing demons all around you with the safety of not having to be totally in melee getting hit in return. With that, let’s take a loot at how to set up this “Throwbarian” build!

Strengths
  • Semi-Ranged Playstyle
  • Strong single target AND AOE damage
  • Strong defense and survival
Weaknesses
  • Requires Fury management
  • Reliance on a specific unique to function
  • Another Triple Shout setup

To see how this build compares to other builds on our site, you can check out our build tier lists.

Arsenal System and Weapon Selection

For the Mighty Throw build, we will be using the Two-Handed Axe in our Technique slot for the bonus damage against Vulnerable Damage.

We will want to assign our Mighty ThrowMighty Throw skill to use our Dual-Wield Weapons to benefit from Ramaladni's Magnum OpusRamaladni’s Magnum Opus and DuelistDuelist.

Paragon Board

We recommend using the following Legendary Nodes and Glyphs to truly take this build into the endgame. Note that each glyph’s information and radius listed below is for the level 100 version. As a reminder, glyph’s reach their maximum radius at level 46 and unlock their Legendary Bonuses at level 45. Let’s take a look!

Mercenaries

As you play through the campaign in Vessel of Hatred, you will unlock various NPC Mercenaries who can join you on your quest to slay demons. Each Mercenary has their own small talent tree that will give them bonuses and skills to help you. Additionally, you can assign a Mercenary that you don’t take with you as a reinforcement to jump in when you activate certain skills. Let’s take a look at how we want to set this up for this build

We hire Raheir, the Shieldbearer

Our Reinforcement Mercenary will be Varyana, The Berserker Crone

Gear, Gems, & Stats

Loot Reborn in season 4 brought us an incredible shift in how gear and itemization are done. It was a major update that has long standing effects into the game’s future. Vessel of Hatred and Season 6 are another large shakeup by reducing Item Power, and shuffling Stats around on gear and tempers. For further details be sure to read our Tempering and Masterworking section below.

Legendary Aspects

Below you will find all of the best-in-slot Aspects found on Legendary Items that are important for this build. Remember that as of patch 1.4 all Legendary Powers can be added into your Codex Of Power once you salvage or extract that item at the Occultist. You can still find some aspects through dungeons as you could in older seasons but these will always be at the lowest power. If you find the same aspect but with a higher roll, once you add it to your Codex through salvage or extraction it will upgrade that power permanently meaning you can imprint it on your gear at the stronger level forever. Let’s go over what aspects you will need to make the most out of this build.

Runes

Runewords return from Diablo 2 in Vessel of Hatred! You are limited to two Runewords across your gear and it requires two sockets in the same item. So this limits creating Runewords by combining two Runes to either Helm, Chest, Pants, or Two-Handed Weapons. We generally recommend them in both of your Two-Handed Weapons for Barbarian. Let’s jump in.

Which Elixir Should You Use?

Visit the Alchemist in any main town to craft helpful Elixirs that increase stats, and experience gain for 30 minutes. Make sure to forage plants and pick up the necessary crafting materials during your adventures; they randomly spawn around the world. Use an Elixir providing any Resistance you need most, or the new Elixir of Advantage IIElixir of Advantage II for increased attack speed.

Return to the Alchemist again every 5 to 10 levels to upgrade your potion. The extra healing is essential to survival.

Gear, Stats, Tempering and Masterwork

Below are the affixes to prioritize on gear. Each line of affixes is listed in order of importance. Tempering Manuals and their recommended affixes are provided in the second column, and the bolded yellow affixes are the most important targets for Masterworking upgrades. To masterwork, you will need rare materials that only drop from The Pit. Be sure to check our Tempering guide, our Masterworking guide, as well as our guide about The Pit for more details about these topics.

Rotation and Playstyle

This new semi-ranged Barbarian has the feel of the old vanilla Diablo 3 “Throwbarian” with fast rapid attacks chucking tons of weapons at all the hordes in front of them and melting them with the pulsing damage and the impacts. Let’s take a look at how to get the most from our skills

Uniques and Mythic Uniques

Below, you will find information about the various Uniques and Mythic Uniques that are useful to this build. Moreover, if you are interested in target farming Mythic Uniques, check out our How to Farm Mythic Uniques guide.

Uniques

Below you will find the useful uniques for this build.

  • The Third BladeThe Third Blade (REQUIRED) – This unique one-handed sword essentially “turns on” this build and allows to spam Mighty ThrowMighty Throw with no cooldown, stopped only by our Fury. It is an absolute must have item and the first thing you should acquire before you consider this build.
  • Ramaladni's Magnum OpusRamaladni’s Magnum Opus – A very powerful one-handed sword that isn’t as required as The Third Blade but is strongly recommended due to its huge power increase. Once we have both Ramaladni’s and Third Blade, assign Mighty Throw to your dual-wield weapons, and start chucking weapons at your foes
  • Locran's TalismanLocran’s Talisman – Added during season 5’s infernal hordes, this new neck remains powerful in Vessel of Hatred and Season 6 due to the large critical strike chance and damage bonuses it provides. We want to equip it as soon as we get one
  • Tibault's WillTibault’s Will – These unique pants are still strong today even though they are past their glory days of seasons 2 and 3. They are one of the only pants with a built in damage reduction, granting us some damage reduction while Unstoppable. Most importantly for this build however, they give us a great way to generate resources quickly to spam our throws
  • Tuskhelm of Joritz the MightyTuskhelm of Joritz the Mighty – An extremely powerful helm that can rival some mythics in the game, it is no less potent in this setup and any Barbarian setup that uses the UnconstrainedUnconstrained Key Passive. Providing resource, cooldown, and damage when we enter the super berserked state

Mythic Uniques

These are the chase rare items in Diablo 4. They have a very low drop rate from most content and a slightly higher drop rate from Tormented Bosses in Torment 1 and beyond. We will be listing only the ones useful to this build. If a mythic unique is not listed here, it is not useful to this build but may be useful to other setups. Let’s take a look.

  • Harlequin CrestHarlequin Crest – The infamous “Shako” helm that provides +4 to all skill ranks, a huge amount of cooldown reduction, armor, and a built in 20% damage reduction. If there is a helm out there that can beat Tuskhelm, it’s this one. If you’re lucky enough to get one, replace your Tuskhelm with it
  • Tyrael's MightTyrael’s Might – Pound for pound the most powerful defensive item in the game. Solving Resistances for you (something Barbarians can struggle with) and giving you some move speed and another built in damage reduction. The power of holy bolts at full life isn’t often useful, but every other stat on this item is. If you’re fortunate enough to come across one, replace your Aspect of the Iron WarriorAspect of the Iron Warrior with it.
  • Ring of Starless SkiesRing of Starless Skies – The ring that “solves” Resource issues for most builds while also providing a massive 50% damage buff to them. The stats on it are also great for this build giving us both Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed. If you manage to find one, drop Aspect of Inner CalmAspect of Inner Calm from your rings and wear this instead.
  • The GrandfatherThe Grandfather – The most famous two-handed sword across the entire Diablo franchise is still extremely powerful in Diablo 4. Providing an enormous critical strike damage multiplier, tons of stats, maximum life, and another flat damage amp, if you get your hands on this legendary item, replace Accelerating AspectAccelerating Aspect with it right away

Season 6: Season of Hatred Rising

Like previous seasons, Season 6 comes with a new faction to gain reputation with the Zakarum Remnants. Additionally, throughout the world, you will find regions afflicted with Mephito’s hatred. Within these regions are massive demons, called ‘Realmwalkers’, which after spawning and charging up, begin to walk in search of sacred ground. While walking in this phase the Realmwalkers are invulnerable but fearsome Bloodbound Guardians spawn to protect it. Slay them to remove chunks of the Realmwalker’s health. Once it reaches its destination it will spawn Hatred Spires which you can kill to finally attack the Realmwalker itself. Once slain it leaves behind a portal to a Seething Realm.

Within the Seething Realm you can offer up certain materials at Realm Gates to determine the reward once you complete the dungeon within the realm. These realms also offer a new currency, Seething Opals. A new type of Elixir that provides a 15% experience increase along with another bonus for 30 minutes. The experience bonus from a Seething Opal stacks with the experience bonus of normal Elixirs allowing you to level even faster!

There are 5 types of Seething Opals:

  • Seething Opal of Equipment which causes enemies to drop additional equipment for 25 Murmuring Obols.
  • Seething Opal of Materials which causes enemies to drop extra herbs and crafting materials for 5 Murmuring Obols.
  • Seething Opal of Gold which causes enemies to drop extra gold for 1 Iron Chunk.
  • Seething Opal of Socketables which causes enemies to drop additional gem fragments and rarely, Runes, for 3 Angelbreath.
  • Seething Opal of Torment Challenges which causes enemies to drop extra Artificer’s Stones and occasionally Boss Summoning Materials or Infernal Compasses for 200 Sigil Powder.

Note that the Torment Challenges Opal is only available beginning in Torment 1 difficulty and beyond and is not available in earlier difficulties. While this season does not offer any direct power increase to characters it provides extra loot and bonuses to find the most powerful items and materials to strengthen your character for their journey into Vessel of Hatred!

Build Mechanics

There are not many new mechanics to speak of with this build that long time Barbarian players won’t find themselves familiar with. The Triple Shout setup is widely known and Iron SkinIron Skin and Wrath of the BerserkerWrath of the Berserker are our only other major cooldowns providing survival and damage.

This build has no problem with either single target, piling on tons of Mighty ThrowMighty Throw‘s into bosses and elites while also not having any real issue with large AoE pulls either thanks to Aspect of Herculean SpectacleAspect of Herculean Spectacle throwing two extra weapons around us with their pulse damage added as well making sure we can clear out spaces very quickly.

Berserking

An important aspect of the Barbarian class is the unique buff “Berserking” which can be triggered through many aspects and skills. This build triggers it most commonly through War CryWar Cry and Wrath of the BerserkerWrath of the Berserker. While in this state, we gain movement speed and damage and thanks to our choice in Key Passives UnconstrainedUnconstrained it lasts a little longer making it easier to maintain and grants a massive 60% multiplier while we’re Berserk. We also benefit from our choice of helms thanks to Tuskhelm of Joritz the MightyTuskhelm of Joritz the Mighty. Try to be Berserk as often as possible when facing tough enemies

Paragon

We recommend the following Legendary Nodes and Glyphs to truly take this buld into the endgame and further into The Pit and later Torment levels. Note that each Glyph listed below is the maxed level 100 Version.

Let’s break down each of these beneficial nodes and where our Paragon Points are positioned in each of the Paragon Boards we use. This part of the build is presented in order of importance. If you do not have enough Paragon Points for use in your Paragon Tree, just slowly work towards each step.

Important Notes

  • Make sure you select the correct Paragon Boards and rotate them into the correct orientation to match the images shown above
  • Above the boards in the order shown as bonus requires of Rare Nodes increase with their placement order
  • Additional bonuses on Glyphs may not be obtainable until they gain the increased radius at level 15 and again at level 46

Starting Board

  1. We start our journey by heading right here and grabbing BrawnBrawn and the surrounding Magic Nodes.
  2. Next we take a left and path through TenacityTenacity and the magic nodes around before heading north.
  3. Unlock the glyph socket and slot in MarshalMarshal.
  4. Grab some Strength nodes nearby and both rare nodes in the radius Raw PowerRaw Power and Iron StrengthIron Strength.
  5. Head north through Iron StrengthIron Strength and unlock the gate at the top of the board, connect the Warbringer board to it.

Warbringer

  1. Start by heading left and grabbing Hungering FuryHungering Fury and some magic nodes nearby before continuing north.
  2. Turn east and make your way to the board’s Legendary Node, WarbringerWarbringer.
  3. Head back to the beginning and now make your way east towards the glyph socket, slot in WrathWrath.
  4. Pick up both rare nodes in the radius Brute ForceBrute Force and Raw PowerRaw Power and some magic nodes surrounding them.
  5. Head north and grab a few more Dexterity nodes before continuing the path north to grab Core ReserveCore Reserve and the magic nodes near it.
  6. Finally connect the eastern gate and attach the Carnage board to it.

Carnage

  1. Continue your march east and unlock the glyph socket, slot in AmbidextrousAmbidextrous.
  2. Grab BerserkerBerserker and FierceFierce rare nodes and the magic nodes that surround them.
  3. Head south east, and turn up to unlock the board’s Legendary Node, CarnageCarnage.
  4. Continue east from the Legendary Node to grab BrashBrash and a few magic nodes nearby, now return to the center and head north.
  5. Path through EnragedEnraged and the trio of magic nodes in front of it before unlocking the Northern Gate and connecting the Blood Rage board to it. Once you’re done with the Blood Rage board, return here.
  6. After finishing Blood Rage, return to this board and from the southern end of the glyph radius, head straight south and unlock the gate, attach Decimator to this gate.

Blood Rage

  1. Move north and unlock the glyph socket, slot in ChallengerChallenger
  2. Head west and grab RevelRevel and a few nodes nearby.
  3. Next from the glyph socket, head north while grabbing some nearby Strength nodes and path through WrathWrath, turn west and pick up the board’s Legendary Node Blood RageBlood Rage.
  4. From the Legendary Node, continue north west and snag GritGrit and the magic nodes near it.
  5. Take one small detour from your northern pathing to the north east to pick up RestorativeRestorative and some life increasing magic nodes.
  6. With that we finish this board for now and head back to the Carnage board.

Decimator

  1. Drive straight south and take the right path to the glyph socket, slot in UndauntedUndaunted.
  2. Grab both rare nodes in the radius DemolishDemolish and DestroyerDestroyer and the nearby magic nodes.
  3. Continue south from the socket and unlock the board’s Legendary Node DecimatorDecimator.
  4. From the Legendary Node, branch out East and West to pick up BrawnBrawn and PillagePillage and their surrounding magic node clusters.
  5. With that our journey has come to an end, sort of.

Concluding

At this point, you should have most of your paragon points spent, all 5 boards unlocked, and all of your Glyph’s empowered with their bonuses. You will have anywhere from 40 to 50 points remaining to spend. Getting to the maximum paragon level in Vessel of Hatred is a truly arduous task that requires many many hours. If you are truly one of those few who are hardcore enough to max out your Paragon, we suggest spending these extra points to grab any Rare Nodes and magic clusters nearby the paths we took on your boards that we didn’t take in our initial journey or any normal nodes for stats you might be lacking to gain bonuses for your various rare nodes. Congratulations on making it this far!

Obol Gambling

A final point on acquiring gear in Season 6 and beyond is using your Obols to target farm specific slots instead of randomly spending them on random drops. Similar to Kadala in Diablo 3, you can use Obol vendors in town to try and get what you’re missing. With the expansion when a level 60 Character spends Obols, all gear from that vendor will be 750 item power, the highest non-ancestral power allowing you to fill out gear with the affixes or Legendary Aspects you need while also having a small chance to grant Ancestral item power 800 gear.
