This build guide is specifically designed for Season 2 of Diablo 4, and may not be effective for use after the season ends.
Abattoir of Zir (AoZ) Build Introduction
The Abattoir of Zir (AoZ) variant builds for Ball Lightning Sorcerers are late endgame setups, focused on performance for the most difficult content in Season 2 of Diablo 4. This guide includes setups for both speed farming to obtain Sigil Powder and Glyph Experience for leveling Tears of Blood, as well as pushing up the AoZ Tiers. This is the best Sorcerer build for AoZ content in Diablo 4. For more information on this endgame activity, check out our Abattoir of Zir Guide.
Climbing up high tiers of Abattoir of Zir requires enough Damage Per Second (DPS) to clear enemies before the timer runs out, as well as enough defense to survive highly damaging enemy attacks. In order to achieve these requirements, the best parts of the Telestomp and Immortal variants from the original Ball Lightning Sorcerer Endgame Guide are combined together.
The major differences between the speed farm and push variant builds are listed below.
- For speed farming, run an AoZ Tier that you can complete in 3 to 4 minutes to quickly gain Sigil Powder and Glyph Experience.
- Teleport Enchantment is used to travel quickly during speed farm, while Ball Lightning Enchantment maximizes Damage Per Second (DPS) to push up AoZ Tiers.
- Lucky Hit Chance becomes a high priority for more Ball Lightning Enchantment procs while pushing AoZ Tiers. Lucky Hit Chance can be obtained on Gloves, Focus and Rings. In addition, leftover Skill Points can be allocated in Precision Magic.
- The Shatter Build Variant makes further changes to the pushing setup to complete the highest AoZ Tiers.
This Abattoir of Zir build guide assumes your character is Level 100. Check the Sorcerer Leveling Guide if you are starting a new character from Level 1-50, and then the Ball Lightning Endgame Guide from Level 50-100. You should also already have the Build Requirements listed in the section below.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- High sustained DPS
- Endless Mana generation without a Basic Attack
- Fast movement and dungeon clearing
- Multiple Defensive Skills for survivability
- Multiple casts are needed to ramp up DPS
- Damage partially reliant on Crowd Controlled enemies or Staggered bosses
- Requires proper Mana and cooldown management
- Lacks survivability when Defensive Skills or Crowd Controls are inactive
AoZ Video Guide & Gameplay Footage
Ball Lightning Bug
Ball Lightning is currently bugged. The tooltip bug fix in Patch 1.2.0 caused the full base damage to be dealt on every tick of Ball Lightning, increasing damage done by 3.33x. In addition, Attack Speed with Enhanced Ball Lightning no longer scales damage down to compensate for faster tick rates. This means DPS can now be increased by up to 3x (10 / 3.33) by increasing the tick rate from the base 3.33 per second to the maximum 10 per second with Attack Speed. Both damage increases result in a total DPS increase of 10x (3.33 x 3) for the Ball Lightning Sorcerer build!
Watch the video below for the explanation and a demonstration against Uber Lilith with a Level 85 Ball Lightning Sorcerer.
To see how this build compares to the other builds on our site, you can check out our build tier lists.
Build Requirements
Ball Lightning has a high resource cost at 50 Mana and requires specific gear to perform well. We recommend starting with our Chain Lightning Leveling Guide to begin a new Sorcerer character, then transitioning to the Chain Lightning Endgame Guide to collect the required items listed below.
- Rings with Maximum Mana and Resource Generation.
- A Helm with Maximum Mana and Cooldown Reduction
- A Focus and Gloves with Lucky Hit Chance to Restore Primary Resource
- Boots with Mana Cost Reduction
- An Amulet with Mana Cost Reduction and Cooldown Reduction
- A highly rolled Prodigy’s Aspect, preferably above 20 Mana
- Gravitational Aspect
While these items are minimum requirements, being prepared with all the aspects and the priority affix gear listed in this build will make the switch easier.
Season of Blood
Season 2 Patch Updates
The following list details the changes in the Season 2 Update (Patch 1.2.0) that may pertain to Ball Lightning Sorcerers. Check the Changelog for all the other guide updates.
- Resistances now stack additively and no longer become less effective with each additional source, while also contributing their full value to Non-physical Damage Reduction. Resistance values on equipment, Elixirs and Paragon have been increased to more easily reach the new 70% cap. Furthermore, Intelligence now gives +0.025% All Resistance per 1 Intelligence instead of 0.05% All Resistance to compensate.
- Increased Critical Strike / Vulnerable Damage affixes are now additive with other damage increases instead of being multiplicative. This change is a nerf to make Critical Strike Damage and Vulnerable Damage comparable to other damage increase options. All classes are affected by this change, therefore it doesn’t necessarily make Sorcerers weaker compared to other classes.
- Armor no longer contributes to Non-physical Damage Reduction and now only reduces damage against Physical damage.
- +% Total Armor affix has been increased by 160%.
- Aspect of Disobedience – Armor % value has been increased from a maximum of +30% Armor to +66% Armor.
- Wizard’s Ball Lightning – Adjusted the maximum number of Crackling Energy generated per cast from 1 to 2.
- Supreme Unstable Currents – Additional functionality added to make Crackling Energy pulse 25% faster while Unstable Currents is active.
- Potent Warding – Resistance to All Elements increased to +3/6/9% from +2/4/6%.
- Align the Elements – Bonus now persists for 2 seconds after taking damage.
- Fists of Fate – Lucky Hit: Chance to Heal Life affix replaced with Lucky Hit: Chance to Gain Damage for 4 Seconds.
- Esu’s Heirloom
- Slow Duration Reduction affix replaced with Critical Strike Damage.
- Evade Grants Movement Speed inherent affix duration increased from 1 to 2 seconds.
- Galvanic Catalyst
- +17% Crackling Energy Damage changed to +10% Lightning Damage.
- Surrounding Crackling Energy Damage Magic Nodes changed to +5% Lightning Damage.
- Static Surge
- Previous: Stunning Close enemies restores 10 mana.
- New: After spending 100 Mana, your next cast of Chain Lightning or Charged Bolts makes enemies Vulnerable for 2 seconds and grants you 10% of your maximum Mana. This Mana cost requirement is reduced by Mana Cost Reduction bonuses.
Best Vampiric Powers for Ball Lightning Sorcerers in Abattoir of Zir
The Season 2 theme introduces Vampiric Powers that provide build-altering bonuses. Spend Potent Blood, acquired from vampiric enemies, to unlock and upgrade Vampiric Powers. Make sure your equipped Chest Armor, Pants, Gloves, Boots and Helm contain the appropriate Pacts (Ferocity, Divinity and Eternity) that match the activation costs listed on the powers.
A Vampiric Curse status effect has been added to complement the new powers: Killing an enemy affected by your Vampiric Curse stores their soul. Casting a Defensive, Macabre or Agility Skill will unleash stored souls to attack nearby enemies. You can hold up to 8 souls.
Listed below are the best Vampiric Powers for Ball Lightning Sorcerers in Abattoir of Zir, ranked by importance. Stat values displayed reflect maximum Level 3 Vampiric Powers.
- Ravenous (3 Ferocity): Lucky Hit: Up to a 20% chance to increase your Attack Speed by 40% of your Total Movement Speed for 6 seconds.
- Resilience (2 Eternity): You gain 1% Damage Reduction for each 2% Life you are missing.
- Sanguine Brace (1 Divinity, 1 Eternity): When you kill an enemy, Fortify for 6% of your Base Life. While you have more Fortify than half of your Maximum Life, you gain 8% Critical Strike Chance.
- Prey on the Weak (2 Ferocity): You deal 16% increased damage to Vulnerable enemies. Enemies are Vulnerable while affected by a Vampiric Curse from your other Vampiric Powers.
- Accursed Touch (6 Divinity): Lucky Hit: Up to a 44% chance to inflict Vampiric Curse on enemies. Enemies with the Vampiric Curse have a 15% chance to spread it to other surrounding enemies. Accursed Souls deal 200% increased damage.
Skill Tree Points and Skill Bar
The following table shows the full allocation of Skill Points for the Ball Lightning Sorcerer build. A Level 100 character should obtain 10 Skill Points from Renown, in addition to 48 points from leveling.
Alternative Skills
If you are playing Season 2 with Vampiric Powers, Vulnerable is applied by Prey on the Weak and Accuresed Touch, instead of Mystical Frost Nova.
Enchantment Slots
Non-Ultimate Skills can be equipped in two available Enchantment Slots. However, a skill must have at least one skill point allocated to it in order to be used in the Enchantment Slot. Skill points that have been granted through gear work as well.
Slot Fire Bolt in the first Enchantment Slot. This applies Burning to enemies for Devouring Blaze and Burning Effects from Paragon. Do not equip Fire Bolt on the Skill Bar.
For speed farming AoZ with Raiment of the Infinite, slot Teleport in the second Enchantment Slot to enable the Telestomping playstyle.
For pushing high tiers of AoZ, slot Ball Lightning in the second Enchantment Slot to maximize Damage Per Second (DPS) or Shatter for the Shatter Build Variant.
Paragon
The Paragon progression system unlocks after reaching Level 50, and offers a considerable boost to character power. Within the Paragon Board, there are many different bonuses, ranging from minor stat enhancements on Magic Nodes to more significant gains with Rare Glyphs and Legendary Nodes.
Important Notes:
- Additional Bonus requirements on Rare Glyphs may not be obtainable until they gain increased radius range at Level 15.
- Attach Legendary Boards in the correct order. Bonus requirements of Rare Nodes increase with their placement order.
- Make sure you select the correct Legendary Board, and then rotate them into the correct orientation before attachment.
Season 2 Update (Patch 1.2.0) – The priority of Critical Strike Damage and Vulnerable Damage are lower due to them becoming additive with other damage bonuses. Separate damage multipliers from Additional Bonuses on Rare Glyphs, along with Damage Reduction nodes, remain highly valuable.
The list below contains the most beneficial Rare Glyphs and Legendary Nodes for the Ball Lightning Sorcerer build, sorted in the order obtained in the final Level 100 Paragon Tree. The images that follow provide a visual of each Paragon Board. The AoZ Paragon setup remains unchanged from the original endgame version of the Ball Lightning Sorcerer build.

Static Surge | After spending 100 Mana, your next cast of Chain Lightning or Charged Bolts makes enemies Vulnerable for 2 seconds and grants you 10% of your maximum Mana. This Mana cost requirement is reduced by Mana Cost Reduction bonuses. |
Adept | • For every 5 Intelligence within range, Mastery Skills gain + [9.6%] increased damage. • Additional Bonus (requires 40 Intelligence purchased in radius range): Mastery Skills have 20% increased area. |

Tears of Blood
Once you acquire the Tears of Blood Unique Glyph from completing Abattoir of Zir Tier 1, replace Control in the Elemental Summoner board. Control can replace Flamefeeder in the starting board if more damage to Stunned and Frozen Enemies is preferred. Take extra stat nodes out of other glyph areas (without losing any additional bonuses) to allocate all stat nodes within radius range of Tears of Blood. Click this planner link for the entire setup including this unique glyph.
Mechanics and Playstyle in Abattoir of Zir
The Ball Lightning Sorcerer requires management of resource with multiple cooldowns. Wizard’s Ball Lightning forms Crackling Energy to absorb for Mana gains with Invigorating Conduit. Crackling Energy also reduces the cooldown of Unstable Currents with Overflowing Energy.
Mystical Flame Shield provides Mana Cost Reduction. Additional Mana can be generated with Prodigy’s Aspect or Aspect of Concentration if needed.
Cast Frost Nova to freeze an entire pack of enemies and apply Vulnerable with Mystical Frost Nova.
Raiment of the Infinite allows this build to use up to two sources of Teleport offensively. Teleporting on top of enemies to Stun and group them up is called “Telestomping”. This playstyle can quickly clear groups of enemies and keep them Crowd Controlled (CC) for safety, perfect for speed farming and pushing Abottoir of Zir!
Melted Heart of Selig turns Mana into a defensive resource that protects your Life, in addition to Barrier. Combined with Maximum Mana and Resource Generation, this setup makes you insanely tanky. This Uber Unique Item has an extremely low chance of dropping from Uber Duriel, but it is highly recommended to survive difficult content, such as Tier 100 Nightmare Dungeons or the Abattoir of Zir.
Damage Rotation
Use the following rotation to optimize damage.
- If you have Raiment of the Infinite, use Teleport to Stun and group up enemies.
- Cast Frost Nova to Freeze enemies and apply Vulnerable with Mystical Frost Nova.
- (Optional) Activate Unstable Currents against tough Elites and Bosses. This Ultimate Skill can be used often due to Overflowing Energy, but make sure it is available for Bosses at the end of dungeons.
- Activate Flame Shield for 25% Mana Cost Reduction, or reserve the skill for emergencies in dangerous battles.
- Spam Ball Lightning, making sure to collect Crackling Energy in order to stay above 100 Mana.
- Activate Lightning Spear for more Stuns.
- Repeat the rotation, making sure to allow Mana to fill completely before using Frost Nova.
Gear Choice and Stats
While farming with your Ball Lightning Sorceress, make sure to pick up all Rare Item drops that may be upgrades. Additionally, save Legendary Items that have useful aspects in your stash to be used later, or for extracting and imprinting onto well rolled Rare Items.
A Wand and Focus are preferred over a Staff for the extra Cooldown Reduction rolls. A Focus has a Cooldown Reduction implicit, as well as a possible affix mod. A Wand is preferred for the Lucky Hit Chance implicit while using Ball Lightning Enchantment or Frigid Breeze.
Mana Cost Reduction is an important stat to spam more Ball Lightning. Maximum Mana allows for more casts above 100 Mana for Elementalist’s Aspect. Lucky Hit Chance to Restore Primary Resource is helpful for Mana generation.
The extra Teleport from the Enchantment Slot that replaces Evade also benefits from additional Ranks to Teleport, Cooldown Reduction and Attacks Reduce Evade’s Cooldown implicit effect on Boots. Prioritize Boots with the implicit, and make sure to upgrade the Boots 5 times to get the highest effect possible.
If you are using Melted Heart of Selig, prioritize Damage Reduction while Injured affixes on Pants and Boots. You can drop below 35% Life before regaining Mana and applying Barrier to stay Injured (also known as Low Life). Ensure you prioritize Resource Generation affixes on Rings and Focus to maintain Mana for protection.
Higher Item Level gear provides higher stat values. Replace outdated gear often, and upgrade new gear at the Blacksmith to increase Item Levels further.
Stat Priority List
Listed below are the affixes to prioritize on gear for Ball Lightning Sorcerers. Each line of affixes are listed in order of importance. Affixes on the same line are considered to be equally important, but their benefits may vary depending how much is stacked or other character stats. Bolded stats are the most important and sometimes vital for the build to function properly.
Season 2 Update (Patch 1.2.0): Critical Strike Damage and Vulnerable Damage affixes are changed to be additive with other damage increases. All additive damage increases of the same amount are equal in value, as long as their conditions are active. Utility and survivability affixes, like Resource and Maximum Life on Rings, are more useful than highly stacked additive damage increases.
Resistances have been reworked to be more effective in Patch 1.2.0, and they are now included in the Stat Priority List. The priority order of Resistances is Lightning > Poison > Fire > Cold > Shadow. Maximum Resistance is 70% by default for each element and can be increased to 85% by various sources.
Barrier Generation bonus is bugged. It does not work correctly to increase the Barrier amount from Protection and is not worth obtaining until fixed. Click this link for a video explaining and testing the Barrier bug.

Legendary Aspects and Unique Items for Abattoir of Zir
Listed below are all the best-in-slot Legendary Aspects and Unique Items for the Ball Lightning Sorcerers in Abattoir of Zir. Melted Heart of Selig and Harlequin Crest are Uber Unique Items with an extremely low chance to drop from Uber Duriel, so alternatives are provided if they are not obtained.
Melted Heart of Selig provides a huge survivability increase with a low investment cost. This Uber Unique Item makes speed farming lower AoZ Tiers (1-9) incredibly easy without dying. The setup can also be used push up to around Tier 15 with ease, before starting to lack the damage to beat the timer. Melted Heart of Selig needs to be replaced with a Legendary Amulet with an Offensive Aspect in order to climb up further. Check out the Shatter Build Variant for a low life setup without Melted Heart of Selig.
If additional Mana generation is needed, an Offensive Aspect can be replaced by Prodigy’s Aspect. Alternatively, Aspect of Concentration can be used with Melted Heart of Selig. Damage taken while Melted Heart of Selig is equipped does not remove the Mana Regeneration effect, as long as you have Mana to drain instead of losing Life. Replacing an Offensive Aspect with a Resource Aspect is not recommended for pushing AoZ Tiers. Mana management is more difficult at the beginning of engagements without a Resource Aspect, until enough Crackling Energy is spawned.
Frostblitz Aspect seems like it has a bad tradeoff of increasing the cooldown on Frost Nova, but it has an unexpected interaction (possible bug) with Enhanced Frost Nova. The Cooldown Reduction effect double dips when you have two maximum charges, reducing cooldown by 2 seconds for every kill, up to 8 seconds total. This interaction makes Frostblitz Aspect worth using when it normally would not be used.
Gear Slot | Legendary Aspect or Unique Item |
---|---|
Amulet | Melted Heart of Selig or Elementalist’s Aspect |
Ring Slot #1 | Tal Rasha’s Iridescent Loop |
Wand, Focus, Gloves or Ring Slot #2 | Gravitational Aspect |
Wand, Focus, Gloves or Ring Slot #2 | Elementalist’s Aspect |
Wand, Focus, Gloves or Ring Slot #2 | Conceited Aspect |
Wand, Focus, Gloves or Ring Slot #2 | Storm Swell Aspect |
Helm | Harlequin Crest or Frostblitz Aspect |
Chest | Raiment of the Infinite |
Pants | Aspect of Disobedience |
Boots | Exploiter’s Aspect |
Alternative Unique items
Ahavarion, Spear of Lycander: Gain a random Shrine effect for 10-20 seconds after killing an Elite enemy. Can only occur once every 30 seconds. — This Uber Unique Item can be used if you do not mind the randomness of the Shrine effects. Although, it replaces two Offensive Aspects and some Shrines become less effective in higher AoZ Tiers.
Gems
Listed below are the best Gems to socket into gear for each slot type.
- Weapon: Royal Emerald for Critical Strike Damage to Vulnerable Enemies.
- Armor: Royal Ruby for Maximum Life or Royal Topaz to prevent deaths from chain Crowd Controls. If you are playing Season 2 with the Sanguine Brace Vampiric Power, Royal Sapphire is also worthwhile.
- Jewelry: Royal Skull for Armor or Individual Resistance Gems for Resistances that are not already capped at 70%. The priority order of Resistances is Lightning > Poison > Fire > Cold > Shadow.
Elixirs
Listed below are the best Elixirs to consume for Abattoir of Zir, ranked by importance. Elixirs that are not available at the Alchemist can only be found as drops. Open Splitting Steel and Mystery Chests in Helltides to farm non-craftable Elixirs.
- Iron Skin Elixir (non-craftable): Essential to cap Armor against high level enemies, especially in higher AoZ Tiers. Alternatively, Heady Iron Barb Elixir can be crafted at the Alchemist.
- Elixir of Resourcefulness (non-craftable): Maximum Mana provides more buffer for casts above 100 Mana for Elementalist’s Aspect and Life protection with Melted Heart of Selig.
- Elixir of Fortitude (non-craftable): Maximum Life increases Barrier amount and reduces Mana drain from Melted Heart of Selig.
- Elixir of Combatant Fortune (non-craftable): Lucky Hit Chance provides more Ball Lightning Enchantment procs.
- Heady Assault Elixir (craftable): Attack Speed allows for more potential active Ball Lightnings. Although, the tick rate of Ball Lightning should already be capped with around 41% Attack Speed Bonus.
- Elixir of Cruelty (non-craftable): Provides the highest source of Critical Strike Chance from an Elixir, if not already capped at 100%. Alternatively, Heady Precision Elixir can be crafted at the Alchemist.
Shatter Ball Lightning Sorcerer Build Variant
The Shatter Ball Lightning Sorcerer is a build variant focused on clearing the highest possible Abattoir of Zir Tiers. Shatter is utilized with Raiment of the Infinite to explode grouped up enemies for massive Area of Effect (AoE) damage. Each Frozen enemy in a tightly packed area causes individual explosions, contributing to a “density multiplier”.
This build variant utilizes a low life setup, which attempts to remain below 35% Life to constantly benefit from Damage Reduction while Injured affixes on Pants, Boots and Amulet. Melted Heart of Selig is not used to protect Life with Mana, so Barriers are relied upon to survive.
Make the following changes to the original AoZ build to complete your highest Tier.
- Swap Overflowing Energy to Shatter.
- Equip a Legendary Amulet with Elementalist’s Aspect and Damage Reduction while Injured instead of Melted Heart of Selig. If you previously had Elementalist’s Aspect elsewhere, replace it with Storm Swell Aspect, Conceited Aspect or Aspect of Control.
- Equip Frost Bolt instead of Teleport or Ball Lightning in the Enchantment Slots. Frost Bolt Enchantment quickly Freezes enemies for Shatter explosions. Take a point out of Fire Bolt to allocate into Frost Bolt if needed.
- Take all Skill Points out of Frost Nova, Enhanced Frost Nova, Mystical Frost Nova, Mystical Flame Shield, Supreme Unstable Currents. Allocate points into Ice Armor Level 1 , Enhanced Ice Armor and Icy Veil Level 3.
- Replace Frost Nova with Ice Armor on the Skill Bar.
