Stat Priority and Tempering Affixes

Listed below are the affixes to prioritize on gear for Grenade Rogues, ranked by importance. Affixes on the same line have equal value, so attempt to obtain all affixes in each line before moving on to the next. Yellow affixes are the most important targets for Masterworking upgrades, while blue affixes are secondary options. For more details, check the Tempering and Masterworking guides.

A Crossbow is selected for a higher damage per hit for Stun Grenades. Daggers are equipped for a faster cast of Shadow StepShadow Step and the Damage to Close enemies implicit stat to scale Close Quarters CombatClose Quarters Combat.

The priority order of Resistances is Lightning > Poison > Fire > Cold > Shadow. Maximum Resistance is 70% by default for each element and can be increased to 85% by various sources.

Boss Powers (Season 8)

In the Season of Belial’s Return (Season 8), equip the following Boss Powers to enhance this build.

Modifier:

  • Liilth’s Wind of Hate: Hitting an Elite enemy with a Main Boss Power creates an inert Blister Clone with 10% of their Maximum Life for 15 seconds. Killing the Blister removes [2.1%] of the Elite’s Life. An Elite can have up to 1 Blister active at once, and a Boss can have up to 2 Blisters. Enemies with Resilience cannot spawn Blisters.

Mercenaries

Once the Den is unlocked during the main questline in the Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4, complete Mercenary key quests to acquire them. Hire a Mercenary and enlist a Reinforcement in the following setup.

Build Mechanics

The Grenade Rogue utilizes the new Pitfighter's GullPitfighter’s Gull, added in the Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4. The cloud of shadows left behind from casting Smoke GrenadeSmoke Grenade stacks multiple times to rapidly grant Stealth, enabling this build to quickly drop Stun Grenades from Opportunist's AspectOpportunist’s Aspect.

Stun Grenades inherit the weapon damage of the last weapon used to attack with, so cast HeartseekerHeartseeker before dropping grenades to apply the weapon damage of your Crossbow to them.

Trickster's AspectTrickster’s Aspect also drops Stun Grenades when casting Smoke GrenadeSmoke Grenade to deal supplemental damage. The Smoke Grenade itself deals a much smaller portion of the total damage.

The damage bonus of Close Quarters CombatClose Quarters Combat is activated after casting a Cutthroat Skill, Shadow StepShadow Step, and a Marksman Skill, HeartseekerHeartseeker.

Death TrapDeath Trap activates Preparation and No WitnessesNo Witnesses.

CaltropsCaltrops increase the damage enemies take from you by 45% with Enhanced CaltropsEnhanced Caltrops. A Caltrops Duration temper and a Caltrops Size temper helps prevent the effect from falling off during Boss fights.

Despite the use of stealth in this build, the Damage on Next Attack After Entering Stealth affix is not worthwhile. The bonus is consumed by Smoke GrenadeSmoke Grenade, which contributes insignificant damage compared to Stun Grenades.

Rotation and Playstyle

Use the following general rotation to quickly kill normal enemies.

  1. Activate Dark ShroudDark Shroud to prepare for battle.
  2. If Shroud of KhandurasShroud of Khanduras is equipped, Evade to group enemies together.
  3. Cast CaltropsCaltrops against tough elites and bosses.
  4. Cast Shadow StepShadow Step on the toughest target to activate the Cutthroat portion of Close Quarters CombatClose Quarters Combat.
  5. Cast HeartseekerHeartseeker to activate the Marksman portion of Close Quarters CombatClose Quarters Combat and apply the base damage of your Ranged Weapon to Stun Grenades.
  6. Use a Potion to activate the damage buff from Unstable ElixirsUnstable Elixirs.
  7. Cast Death TrapDeath Trap to activate Preparation and No WitnessesNo Witnesses.
  8. Rapidly spam Smoke GrenadeSmoke Grenade to drop Opportunist Grenades.

Elixirs

Visit the Alchemist in any main town to craft helpful Elixirs, or find Elixirs by killing enemies or opening chests during various activities in Diablo 4. Listed below are the best Elixirs to consume for the Stealth Grenade Rogue, ranked by importance.

  1. Elixir of PrecisionElixir of Precision provides the highest damage output increase, if not already capped at 100% Critical Strike Chance.
  2. Elixir of AdvantageElixir of Advantage increases damage output, if not already capped at 100% Attack Speed bonus from gear and Paragon.
  3. Elixir of FortitudeElixir of Fortitude is the best general-purpose option for survivability.
