<p>Escalating Nightmares are one of the bigger additions to <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/diablo-4-latest-season/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4&#8217;s Season</a> 9, but since the system is still new, a lot of players are unsure how it works or when it unlocks. If you have picked up one of the new Escalation Sigils and are wondering what exactly you are getting into, here is a quick breakdown.</p>



<p>These dungeons are essentially a chain of three back-to-back <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/nightmare-dungeon-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nightmare Dungeons</a>, with each one stacking on the affixes from the previous run. Things can get rough quickly, especially once you reach <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/world-tier-difficulty/#torment_difficulties" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Torment difficulty</a> and unlock the final phase.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Start an Escalation</h2>



<ul>
<li>Escalation Sigils can drop from Horadric Caches, Strongrooms, or the Seasonal Reputation track.</li>



<li>Once you activate a Sigil, it will teleport you into the first dungeon.</li>



<li>After clearing it, a portal opens to the next one, showing you the added affixes.</li>



<li>After three, <strong>if you are in Torment difficulty</strong>, you head straight into Astaroth&#8217;s Lair for a boss fight.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Loot, Bonuses, and Affixes</h2>



<p>Escalating Nightmares can also come with special affixes that spawn:</p>



<ul>
<li>XP orbs (good for leveling)</li>



<li>Extra shrines</li>



<li>Treasure Goblins</li>



<li>Loot chests full of materials</li>
</ul>



<p>You will also earn Ancestral Legendaries, Uniques, gold, and other late-game drops.</p>



<p>This system is available on both Seasonal and Eternal characters, and it becomes one of the better ways to gear up fast once you hit the late game.</p>

<p>Luckily, one clever player, yonkzoid, has shared a much faster and less painful workaround that skips all the alt-leveling nonsense entirely.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Combine Strongroom Sigils &amp; Boss Lairs</h2>



<p>Instead of grinding out a new character, here is what you do:</p>



<ul>
<li>Activate any Nightmare Sigil (ideally one with the Strongroom affix, but not mandatory).</li>



<li>Do <strong>NOT</strong> enter the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/nightmare-dungeon-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nightmare Dungeon</a>.</li>



<li>Instead, teleport directly to various <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/how-to-farm-uniques-from-bosses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Boss Lairs</a> (like Grigoire, Varshan, Lord Zir, etc.).</li>



<li>Check if the Wayfinder icon appears, which indicates a Strongroom has spawned. If you do not remember what it is, it&#8217;s the sort of aura that appears around you when you enter a dungeon, that indicates there is indeed a Strongroom not far.</li>



<li>Find the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/horadric-strongrooms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Strongroom</a>, run it and grab the <a class="icy-gtnbrg-link" href="#"><span class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip"><img decoding="async" class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip-img" src="https://static.icy-veins.com/wp/static/d4/latest/images/icons/2DInventory_Materials_38.webp" alt="Obducite"><span class="tooltip-spell-name" data-item-type="Crafting Material" data-item-quality="normal">Obducite</span></span></a>.</li>



<li>Rinse and repeat across multiple lairs. Yes, you can chain them.</li>
</ul>



<p>Some players even reported multiple Strongrooms spawning at once across different lairs, making this an incredibly efficient method when done with a group.</p>



<p>Keep in mind that it is random, and you may not get a Strongroom in each Layer. You also do not need to beat any lair Boss for this. Just enter their dungeon and look for the Strongroom.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bonus Tips:</h2>



<ul>
<li>Any Nightmare Sigil works, not just Strongroom-tagged ones, so burn your worst ones.</li>



<li>Keep in mind that Sigils with Strongroom affixes will just have more chances to spawn a lot of Strongrooms.</li>



<li>While some players say Belial&#8217;s lair never spawns Strongrooms, others claim they have seen it happen, so just head in and check for yourself.</li>



<li>This method may not last forever. It smells like a bug, so farm while you still can!</li>



<li>Do it in Torment 4 if you can. You will obtain more <a class="icy-gtnbrg-link" href="#"><span class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip"><img decoding="async" class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip-img" src="https://static.icy-veins.com/wp/static/d4/latest/images/icons/2DInventory_Materials_38.webp" alt="Obducite"><span class="tooltip-spell-name" data-item-type="Crafting Material" data-item-quality="normal">Obducite</span></span></a>.</li>
</ul>



<p>While it is not the perfect way to farm <a class="icy-gtnbrg-link" href="#"><span class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip"><img decoding="async" class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip-img" src="https://static.icy-veins.com/wp/static/d4/latest/images/icons/2DInventory_Materials_38.webp" alt="Obducite"><span class="tooltip-spell-name" data-item-type="Crafting Material" data-item-quality="normal">Obducite</span></span></a>, it is a good one to skip the alt grind. Just pop a Nightmare Sigil, ignore the dungeon, and bounce between boss lairs to spot free Strongrooms. It is quick, easy, and way less painful.</p>

It is easily clearing Pit 100+ and absolutely blasting bosses like <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/belial-boss-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Belial</a>, all while feeling explosive!</p>

You can easily clear high-level content and one-shot bosses without burnout. On top of that, it was about time <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/druid/builds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Druids</a> made a comeback. </p>

Is This Druid Build the Most Fun of All Season 9?


<p>Among Diablo 4&#8217;s many activities, cellars fall short in both content and rewards, and they urgently need improvements.</p>



<p>Originally, they acted as quick objectives, something to do while waiting on events or simply passing the time. But, in <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/diablo-4-latest-season/">Season 9</a>, there&#8217;s zero incentive to visit them. Cellars are now just dead content.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What&#8217;s the Problem With Cellars?</h2>



<p>When&#8217;s the last time you chose to enter a cellar in Diablo 4, outside of being under level 15 or ticking off a <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/latest-season-journey-for-diablo-4/">season journey</a> objective? </p>



<p>For most players, the answer is simple: NEVER. And that apathy grows stronger every season&#8230;</p>



<p>As Diablo 4 evolves, new miid- and late-game content keeps raising the bar with bigger, better rewards. </p>



<p>Seasonal objectives, <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/nightmare-dungeon-guide/">Nightmare Dungeons</a>, and <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/infernal-hordes-guide/">Infernal Hordes</a> all offer solid incentives. Cellars? They don&#8217;t scale and barely drop anything worthwhile.</p>



<p><span style="margin: 0px;padding: 0px">Reddit user <strong>AnubisIncGaming</strong> brought this topic to light, and most players have forgotten that cellars have even existed.</span></p>

<p>While some players think cellars should be removed entirely, others suggest buffs that could finally make them worthwile.</p>



<p>Cellars could have buffs to give more mid-game drops, such as more XP for doing a handful each day, offering materials such as bags of <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/best-ways-to-farm-gems-in-diablo-iv-season-9/">gems</a>, or even telling players that there is a high chance for Loot Goblins to spawn in some.</p>



<p>Some even joke that a whole season focused on cellars might be the only way to make them matter again.</p>

Diablo 4’s Cellars Are Still Pointless—And Players Are Tired of Pretending They’re Not


<p>It is not every day you log into <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a> and get showered in high-tier loot for absolutely no reason. But that is exactly what happened to one very confused player this week.</p>



<p>In a Reddit post titled &#8220;<em>What just happened?? All these Uniques showed up on log i</em>n,&#8221; the user shared that they entered the game and were instantly greeted by a pile of random <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/how-to-farm-uniques-from-bosses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Unique items</a> lying at their feet. Not from their stash. Not from any past loot runs. Just… there. On the ground. Waiting.</p>

<p>&#8220;<em>I never had these drop before, nothing from my stash, I picked them up but this has never happened to me before, it was the strangest thing I&#8217;ve ever had happen in game</em>,&#8221; the player wrote.</p>



<p>Naturally, the community had thoughts.</p>



<p>Some suggested that maybe a player in their zone had dumped loot after a boss run, and they just happened to log in at the right place and time. Others pointed out that you should not even be able to see another player&#8217;s loot unless you are in a party, so the mystery only deepens.</p>



<p>One reply summed it up best:</p>



<p>&#8220;<em>Unless you are in a party with that person, this is not at all how that works</em>.&#8221;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">So… What Actually Happened?</h2>



<p>No one really knows. Maybe it is a weird <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/diablo-4-latest-season/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Season 9</a> bug. Maybe the loot gods were just feeling generous. Or maybe Sanctuary just had one of its chaotic moments.</p>



<p>Maybe Lilith has had enough of Inarius again, and threw all his stuff out of the window&#8230;</p>



<p>Whatever the reason, this story is a reminder that anything can happen in Diablo 4, especially when you are not expecting it.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Is the Best Way to Farm Gems in Season 9</h2>



<p>The best way seems to be <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/infernal-hordes-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Infernal Hordes</a>. Multiple players agree that Infernal Hordes, especially the gem fragment chests, are among the best gem farming methods right now. If you skip the 200-cost loot chest and go straight for the gem and <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/masterworking-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">masterwork</a> material chest, you will get a huge payoff.</p>



<p>Another standout method is <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/nightmare-dungeon-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Escalating Nightmare Dungeons</a>, which offer a high drop rate for almost everything except <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/how-to-farm-uniques-from-bosses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mythics and boss mats</a>. They are fast, rewarding, and reliable. On top of that, they are the main activity for this season, so it is a win-win deal!</p>



<p>The advantage of Nightmare Dungeons are the gem-related affixes. They are not as fast as Infernal Hordes, but great for focused farming.</p>



<p>Here are a few other honorable mentions. Keep in mind that, while those do reward gem fragments, it is in less large quantity than the previous methods. However, if you need to change activity, or want to farm something else at the same time, they are a good alternative:</p>



<ul>
<li>Redeeming the Material Cache from the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/tree-of-whispers-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tree of Whisper</a> is also a good way, however, it relies on luck, as you will not necessarily get this Cache each time you hand in Whispers.</li>



<li><a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/helltide-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Helltides</a>. Enemies usually drop gem fragments when they die. If you farm XP or Gear you will get a certain amount of fragments at the same time through Helltides</li>
</ul>



<p>Overall, the conclusion is that Infernal Hordes still remain the best option for Gem Fragments. Simply skip the Gear chest, and open the material one directly. This is the fastest way to get a good amount of gem fragments.</p>


Best Ways to Farm Gems in Diablo IV Season 9

<p>The first nerf of the season is in, as the Cosmic Anomaly Catalyst has its proc rate reduced with projectile skills. Another nerf addresses an infinite damage scaling issues for Sorcerers involving the Infusion Jewel and Enlightenment passive. We&#8217;ve recently seen this featured in the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/lightning-spear-hydra-sorcerer-clears-pit-150-in-80-seconds-rob-reacts/">Pit 150 Speed Clear we covered here</a>. </p>



<p>There&#8217;s also a QoL improvement, as Horadric Portals should be easier to interact with.</p>

So just keep in mind that if you have a beginner build, you may want to farm in lower Torment Tier. You can also hold onto the seasonal quest until you have a decent build, and then group up with friends to easily run through the T4 Strongroom multiple times.</p>

<li>But <strong>DO NOT pick up the Bloody Relic</strong>!! It drops when you open the chest, it is a Green Item. If you pick it up, it will complete the quest and the Strongroom will disappear when you leave the dungeon</li>



<li>Leave the Dungeon without picking up the Relic</li>



<li>Reset the Dungeon and re-enter </li>



<li>Repeat</li>

<p>The answer is a bit mixed this time. If you already have a character, and you cleared the seasonal quest, you will not be able to use this technique, since you need a new character for this. And not everyone wants to bother leveling an Alt.</p>

<p>However, if you anyway wanted to level another character, now is your chance. You can make your Alt, ask a friend to carry you through a few Pit runs, and help you get some decent gear. Then head to Torment 4 and progress your quest until you can reset the Strongroom. This way you can farm enough <a class="icy-gtnbrg-link" href="#"><span class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip"><img decoding="async" class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip-img" src="https://static.icy-veins.com/wp/static/d4/latest/images/icons/2DInventory_Materials_38.webp" alt="Obducite"><span class="tooltip-spell-name" data-item-type="Crafting Material" data-item-quality="normal">Obducite</span></span></a> for all your characters and never have to bother anymore this season! </p>



<p>So the final verdict is simply: it depends on your personal situation.
