Multiple Diablo 4 Hardcore players are reporting unexplained deaths on the official forums, with some suspecting a possible issue related to the Earthquake skill and Barrier Witch Power. A player recently shared a video of their Whirlwind Barbarian being instantly killed in a Pit 50 (Torment 3), despite having high survivability stats, including maxed resistances and armor.
The in-game Hall of Heroes listed the cause of death as an “Unknown Killer,” leaving them confused and frustrated.
Others in the official forums have chimed in, reporting similar sudden deaths under the same circumstances. One player, Heartattack, stated they had experienced it twice and noticed a common pattern among affected players-each was using Earthquake along with the Barrier Witch Power. They plan to test a new character without the barrier to determine if the issue is linked specifically to the Earthquake skill.
Many players have recorded videos of their Hardcore characters dying under mysterious circumstances and shared them on the official forums.

GASMAN leveled up their Level 48 Necromancer, utilizing the Barrier witch power, as well, and their character died.
In Hardcore mode, death is permanent, so players do everything they can to avoid it. That’s why the community is frustrated and looking for answers—right now, it looks like their characters are being lost to a possible bug on Blizzard’s end. Hopefully, we’ll get some answers soon.
