The environment typically moves to the next season’s version when the current one’s launching, meaning Season 7 (Patch 2.1) is rolling out today as expected. However, the unexpected jump from 2.1 to 2.3 raises some eyebrows.
One possibility is that a larger-than-usual-mid-season update, potentially labeled as 2.2, could be on the horizon before Season 8. Alternatively, this could be a simple internal numbering change, but given Blizzard’s track record, such an oversight seems unlikely.
Maybe, Blizzard just wants to test out a major feature well ahead of time.
