Diablo 4’s “Burrowed Powers” Problem: Are Seasonal Mechanics Digging the Game Into a Hole?

Staff Avatar by Staff

We’re getting closer to the Season 8 launch, and with it comes the new season mechanic called “Boss Powers”. Many players are discussing whether Blizzard should take another path with the season concept to enrich the long-term playability of the game.

Borrowed Power or Lasting Impact?

The idea of “Burrowed Powers” is nothing new for Blizzard games. World of Warcraft players have faced similar frustrations, often losing powerful abilities with each new expansion.

In Diablo 4, we receive new Borrowed Powers every season. While players in the Seasonal Realm get to experience these mechanics, those in the Eternal Realm never see them. But the core problem still exists: these powers don’t contribute to the game’s long-term growth, making Diablo 4 feel stagnant.

Can Blizzard Do Better?

A great example is Season 5, which built upon the successful changes of Season 4’s “Loot 2.0” system. While Season 5’s Infernal Hordes weren’t revolutionary, they provided additional endgame variety.

A Better Path Forward

Instead of focusing on “Borrowed Powers”, Blizzard should focus more on creating meaningful content that carries over into the base game. Whether it’s new activities, enemies, or gameplay systems, these additions would make Diablo 4 feel like it’s growing with each update rather than resetting every few months.
