We’ve talked about where to get the highest item level gear in D4 before, but what is currently the absolute highest that’s been reported? If you’ve read that previous article you’ll know that it can only come from the “rare” aka named elites. These rare quality drops also aren’t really all that useful, with the possible exception of weapons.
Well, today we’re taking a look at the highest one we’ve seen reported (by 5altwaterCowboy). It’s coming in at a huge 845 base, so let’s take a look!

As you can see the final upgraded item level comes in at 870, which is the highest we’ve seen. Some have theorized the rare/named elite drops go up to 850, which would be a nice round number and make some sense. But we haven’t seen any reports of anyone getting higher than 845. Usually the affixes on these rares are pretty bad, and you only get three of them and they’re always the same. However this particular Infernal Edge is actually not bad – especially since you can enchant it for cheap too!
When it comes to non-weapon gear the item level doesn’t really matter that much after 725, due to the breakpoints. After that 725 mark it’s only the armor and weapon damage that gets increased. You can read more about how breakpoints work and what they are here.
