Ventures Overview for FFXIV
This page contains information on Retainer Ventures, which allow players to send their Retainers out on missions to receive rewards.
Ventures
Ventures are expedition missions that players can assign to their retainers. These missions can reward rare and exclusive rewards. As retainers complete ventures, they can equip gear, level up, and go on higher leveled missions.
You can learn more about the function of retainers in our dedicated page, which can be found below.
How to Unlock Retainer Ventures
To unlock Retainer Ventures, players must have unlocked retainers. You then have to complete the Level 17 quest "An Ill-conceived Venture", available in your starting city.
Venture Currency
All ventures require currency to undertake, which is also conveniently called a Venture. You can view the amount of Ventures you currently possess in your Currency menu in the Common tab. The easiest way to acquire Venture currency is through Grand Company turn-ins. You can learn more about Grand Companies on our dedicated page.
Retainer Classes and Jobs
Retainers can be assigned any of the non-limited Disciple of War, Disciple of Magic, or Disciple of Land classes. The assigned class determines what kind of venture they can undertake. You can level up your retainer's class in order to do ventures of a higher level, but the retainer's level cannot exceed the player's level in said class.
In addition, combat class Retainers can be assigned jobs if they meet the requirements. The requirements to assign a job are listed below.
- Retainer must have reached Level 50;
- You must have purchased a copy of Modern Vocation, available at Retainer Vocates for 40 Ventures;
- If the job does not have a base class, the retainer must have reached the starting level for that job: 60 for Gunbreaker and Dancer and 50 for the rest.
What Class Should I Assign My Retainers?
Good question! It depends on what your needs are and what content you participate in, as well as how many extra retainers you have purchased. If you have just the base two retainers, I would recommend making both DoW/DoM, on whichever two jobs you have the highest level of. This will let you send your retainers on Hunting ventures for monster drops. If you are interested in crafting, I would recommend at least one Fisher retainer instead, as gathering fish can be a pain at times. Finally, if you have more than two retainers, try to have one retainer of each type, unless you are not interested in crafting and gathering at all.
Gearing Retainers
Retainers can be assigned gear suitable for their class. This gear will dictate the amount or quality of items procured on a venture. They must meet the gear requirements in order to equip it.
- For Disciples of War and Magic, the average item level increases the amount of items;
- For Disciples of Land, there is a minimum Gathering stat requirement to gather items, while the Perception stat increases the chance to get more items.
Therefore, for DoW and DoM retainers, you want to equip the highest item level possible, and for DoL retainers, you want to equip gear with a high Gathering and Perception stat. Keep in mind you cannot change your retainer's gear while they are on a Venture.
Assigning a Venture
To assign a venture, interact with a Summoning Bell to bring up the Retainer list. Select the Retainer you wish to undertake the Venture, then select "Assign venture".
You then have to choose between the three types of retainer ventures. After selecting the type of venture, you can confirm to send the retainer out.
Types of Retainer Ventures
Retainers can undertake three main types of ventures, which differ based on the class they have been assigned.
- A normal venture in which the retainer gathers a specific item in a short period of time;
- An Exploration in which the retainer gathers a random item related to their class over a long period of time;
- A Quick Exploration in which the retainer gathers a random item in a short period of time;
Normal ventures cost one venture (currency) to undertake, while Exploration ventures cost two.
Hunting Ventures
Hunting Ventures are a normal venture which allows Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic retainers to hunt for items dropped by mobs. They have the same selection of items no matter what job they are assigned. Increasing the retainer's item level will increase the quantity of items. The base duration is one hour.
Mining Ventures
Mining Ventures are a normal venture which allows Miner retainers to gather items acquired through mining. The player must have gathered the item previously to unlock the option for the retainer to gather the item. In addition, the retainer must meet the minimum Gathering stat requirement to gather the item. Increasing the retainer's Perception stat will increase the quantity of items. The base duration is one hour.
Botany Ventures
Botany Ventures are a normal venture which allows Botanist retainers to gather items acquired through botany. The player must have gathered the item previously to unlock the option for the retainer to gather the item. In addition, the retainer must meet the minimum Gathering stat requirement to gather the item. Increasing the retainer's Perception stat will increase the quantity of items. The base duration is one hour.
Fishing Ventures
Fishing Ventures are a normal venture which allows Fisher retainers to gather fish acquired through fishing. The player must have fished the item previously to unlock the option for the retainer to gather the item. In addition, the retainer must meet the minimum Gathering stat requirement to gather the item. Increasing the retainer's Perception stat will increase the quantity of items. The base duration is one hour.
Field Exploration
Field Exploration Ventures are an exploration venture which allows Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic retainers to explore and collect a random item. These ventures take the longest, starting at 18 hours, but can reward rare and unique items. These also grant the highest amount of experience points to your retainer.
Highland Exploration
Highland Exploration Ventures are an exploration venture which allows Miner retainers to explore and collect a random item. These ventures take the longest, starting at 18 hours, but can reward rare and unique items. These also grant the highest amount of experience points to your retainer.
Woodland Exploration
Woodland Exploration Ventures are an exploration venture which allows Botanist retainers to explore and collect a random item. These ventures take the longest, starting at 18 hours, but can reward rare and unique items. These also grant the highest amount of experience points to your retainer.
Waterside Exploration
Waterside Exploration Ventures are an exploration venture which allows Fisher retainers to explore and collect a random item. These ventures take the longest, starting at 18 hours, but can reward rare and unique items. These also grant the highest amount of experience points to your retainer.
Quick Exploration
Quick Explorations are exploration ventures which allow any retainer to explore and collect a random item. These ventures, as their namesake says, only take one hour and the item procured is truly random: it can range from endgame gear to a single Water Crystal! The experience points gained has been changed to a flat amount, but it grants more experience per hour compared to other ventures.
What Venture Should I Send My Retainers On?
It depends on whether you want to level your retainers or gather items. Quick Exploration ventures are usually the fastest way to level your retainers if you can send them out every hour. However, if you will not be playing for a long period of time, you should send them out on normal Exploration ventures, which take eighteen hours and reward a great amount of experience points.
If you wish to acquire specific items, have your retainer undertake the regular ventures. You can select the item you wish to acquire, and it only takes a maximum of one hour.
If you wish to acquire rare items, have your retainer undertake Quick or Normal Exploration missions.
