Unlocking Flying Mounts with Aether Currents in FFXIV
This page contains information on flying in Final Fantasy XIV, how to unlock it in each expansion's zones, and how to make the most of travelling while you are locked to the ground.
Flying in Eorzea
Using a flying mount is available in all non-cities and non-hub locations in Eorzea, but flying is locked behind the completion of quests or collection of Aether Currents.
Aether Currents
From Heavensward and onwards, players must acquire all Aether Currents in each zone before they gain the ability to fly on their mounts. Each new expansion has reduced the amount of Aether Currents needed in a zone in all previous expansions. Players who meet this new requirement will be able to fly in the area.
Players must attune to the Aether Currents in the open world. To find these, players are given the Aether Compass at the beginning of Heavensward, which alerts them to the closest Aether Current on the map. The Aether Compass is available to view in the Collections menu. To check on the status of Aether Currents in any zone, go to the Aether Current interface in the Travel Menu.
What If I Lose My Aether Compass?
Starting in Endwalker, the Aether Compass itself has been changed. The Compass is now available in the Collections menu under the Duty main menu tab, so players will have permanent access to their Aether Compass. Add the Aether Compass to your hotbar to have easier access to its functions when exploring a new area.
A Realm Reborn Flight
As flight in A Realm Reborn was added in Patch 5.3, players do not need to attune to Aether Currents. Instead, flight is unlocked in all A Realm Reborn zones after players have completed the final quest in the 2.0 storyline, The Ultimate Weapon.
Heavensward Flight
Starting in Heavensward, players must attune to Aether Currents to gain the ability to fly in each zone. The last Aether Current is usually unlocked as the player leaves the zone, meaning that, during your first playthrough, you will not be able to fly.
