How to handle my affliction warlock

Hello, readers from Icy Veins. I thank all of the souls who helped me with my last set of questions but I now turn to the warlock community for help with my next member I need to fix. This one is an affliction warlock by trade, with demonology as an offspec. Great guy, makes people laugh but is fairly consistent for being one of our lower performers. I'm looking for some tips and tricks, DoT uptime notes that I didn't get, and things that I can say to him in writing.

These logs should have something from just about every boss on him apart from Thogar, in which I was a fool and didn't log him in the beginning. Anything you guys can give me would be heavily appreciated.

he's opening with sb:ss, don't do that

Why is opening with SB:SS a terrible thing? Is it the soul shard cost? Does it make haunt harder to line up effectively?

Answer by @Recklessfear is pretty much everything.

Can only add that his pure uptime numbers are a bit weak. Darmac fight is a good example - 62% on UA.
He is using too much Soulswap, a spell that is very controversal right now (i mean not really good).

I'm also questioned for a bit. 
Iron Maidens kill. Besides too big Soulswap and Soulburn count, I can see two different pets - DoomGuard and Observer both.
How and why is this possible? Doomguard has the interrupt too, there is no real need to go Observer at any situation given you use DemServ.

I was not aware of the Doomguard having the same, viable interrupt. It sounds like I really need to read up on warlocks. My astounding lack of knowledge is unacceptable as a raid leader, period. Thank you both for your input. I will get to work on telling him that and increasing my own knowledge pool.

I don't think he's questioning you so much as wanting to know the reasoning so that he can explain it to the warlock in question.

Pretty much everything everyone said here is great and good advice, I thought I would just add in my two cents. I really only play affliction unless Demo is just clearly better on a particular fight. First things, Soul swap is a trap, it sounds so good but just isn't.

 

This is how my opener looks on many fights:

Prepot at 2 seconds > Trinket/Racial > Dark Soul > Haunt > Agony > Corruption > UE > Drain Soul until you need to refresh.

 

On fights where you open with Lust:

Prepot at 2 seconds >Trinket/Racial > Dark Soul > Haunt > Agony > Corruption > UE > Haunt > Haunt > Haunt > Drain Soul > Dark soul again 15 seconds into Lust > Continue to Drain Soul till refresh is needed.

 

I dump all my shards during lust because the regen is very fast. My rule of thumb is to generally hover around 2 shards, while NEVER capping shards. Nightfall procs are so slim right now that you can't afford to waste one because of capping on shards. Also 99 - 100% uptime on Agony isn't too difficult to pull off, its very important because of the stacks it does, if I am in danger of losing Agony I just interrupt Drain Soul at the bottom of one of its ticks. Our goal (or at least in discussion atm is to get enough haste to go SB:Haunt)
