Newbie. Question/help with terminology

Recommended Posts

New to Hearthstone, been reading the forums but getting confused with some terms... For instance it is mainly the type of deck descriptions. (face, control, oil, gvg, naxx) some are self explanatory others I am lost on. My question is, is there someplace I can go to get caught up on the terminology? Or would some one mind explaining some of the odd deck descriptors?

Thanks

Hey ndmobeer!  First of all welcome to the forums and thanks for the post.

I'll try my best to explain a few of the terms but if anyone else wants to add anything below feel free!

Face - this is generally when a player attacks their opponents hero.  So they are attacking the hero portrait or their "face"

Control - this is where you have cards / a deck / your tactics help you to dominate the board and gain "control".  This can be done in a number of ways such as using a combination of cards or slowing the opponent down with particular spells etc.

Oil is a term to describe on of the rogue decks (check it out in the deck building section).

Gvg - This just refers to the "Goblins vs Gnomes" expansion set of cards.

Naxx - This just refers to the Naxxaramas adventure and / or the cards that you receive through completing it.

I hope that helps.  They are pretty basic explanations and like I said if anyone else wants to add to them then feel free!

In addition to what's been said, I'd just point out that sometimes, deck names are not at all obvious. They can come from the name of the player who popularised them, from the name of some card or effect that the deck revolves around, etc. All in all, it's not really very important to understand why decks are called what they are called, as long as you know how to play them :)

True I think knowing what the name is based e on helps me when I am looking at deck make ups eliminating ones based on play style etc.. But yes learning how to play them is just as important. Hope that makes sense
