Whirlwind Bul-Kathos Barbarian

Recommended Posts

Gotta say I love this guide. Rolled WW Barb this season reset and got into the top 100 leaderboards and completed season journey in like 24 hours. I'm pushing farther into grift progression then I ever have before. Really love the build, also love spinning forever like a demonic dreidel or top

Guide name says Bul-Kathos but guide suggests Istvans blades. Which weapons are more suitable damage wise?

Istvan's Paired Blades should be better set at the moment. We will change the name of the build in the drop down menu shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm running this build Exactly as the Main Guide Build, but with the Bul-Kathos Mighty Weapons.  I think it's the slightly older Version of the same Build.  I'm fairly/decently Optimized and doing decent Damage but I'm sure dying a lot

Just got the Istvans Blades this weekend but haven't Suited them Up yet.  (I need to re-roll the Slander to Ancient first), maybe that makes a difference(?)

Long time fan, first time commenter (lolz). What would you guys say would be the ideal (top 3 preferences) for the passive rolled on the Hellfire Amulet?

I found the build a bit squishy. Are you there any tips for increasing survivability while getting better gear? I have all of the necessary pieces, but until I get my gear ancient/augmented/etc, what can I do to increase my chances of survival? (ie-skill changes, different gear pieces, so on)

I've been playing with my wife on our PS4 most of the time these days, and I realize that these Builds do play quite differently on the PS4 as opposed to the Computer, but...

I've put a lot more Paragon Points in Vitality with this newer version of the build.  I still die a lot.  I haven't any Paragon Points in Maximum Fury.  It doesn't seem to make any difference and I don't run-out of Fury much at all.

At the moment I'm still using the slightly older version of the Build with the Bul-Kathos Mighty Weapons.  I assume that the + Armor from the Istvans blades might help the Build not Die as much.  I'll let you know when I get the Blades up and running.

That's definitely the case, Istvan's is just so much tankier that I couldn't go back to Bul-Kathos past GR90. I love Bul-Kathos' mobility, but I leave it to speedruns. Some people stick to BKs well past 90 though, there is a measure of personal preference there.

About how long does it take to gear up this kinda set? I have a monk that can comfortably do 60 GR's on his own, (once I get a unity for my follower I can probably push higher than that). And what's the best way to do it? Farm Blood Shards on geared character and spend on Barb?

I believe in an optimised setup, Obsidian Ring should be cubed and skull grasp should be equipped, because skull grasp can roll with crit, crit, socket, cdr/area dmg

I came to the same conclusion and this has been bothering me as well with this build. The suggested stat priority of:

  1. Socket
  2. Critical Hit Chance
  3. Critical Hit Damage
  4. Cooldown Reduction (one one ring)
  5. Area Damage (on the other ring)

is not possible with the Obsidian Ring of th Zodiac since that ring always rolls Attack Speed, Critical Hit Chance, Cooldown Reduction and Resource Cost Reduction. The presence of both Attack Speed and Resource Cost Reduction prevents one from ever achieving the suggested rolls. It would be nice if either the ring were replaced with Skull Grasp (if the stated stat priorities are preferred) or if the stat priorities were corrected (if the Obsidian Ring were preferred over Skull Grasp).

I finally got some decent rolls on rings to switch from the F&R I was running.  Granted, I still have the weapons from the older build, but I feel like I was having better results with F&R.  Is it just a matter of getting used to the playstyle of watching the CDs more closely?  Yes, things blow up when the CoE cycles lightning, but with F&R I had a damage boost all the time.  Is there maybe a plateau I'll hit with F&R that I haven't seen yet?  I'm farming 60, 65-ish push at the moment.

I'm wondering why this build does not actually use the Rend ability?

Because you stop WW when you rend losing 50% DR and will get one shot at higher GR. Seems like an oversight on Blizzard's part if you ask me.

I'm kind new still but looking at the Waste set bonus, you'd think Rend would still be a big part of the build. How come it isn't? Is it because it doesn't do that much damage or something? Just out of curiosity is all. Thanks :)

All true but the difference for stomp is that you stun things so it's a safety wheras the rend would just get you killed.

HOWEVER, this is being fixed in patch 2.6.1 where the changes to the set is saying the damage reduction will last 3seconds after you end Whirlwind so rend could be making a nice comback for your overall dps!

I don't quite get it. This build is fueled by Bul-Kathos +10 fury/sec set bonus. Then you switched to Istvans blades for additional armor, but everything else left intact, even +dmg on maximum fury passive. So what provides all the fury now? Even if you start with full fury somehow, you will run out of it in 10-12 seconds with this build and gearset, especially on boss encounter. What am i missing here?

Sweet, is that also when they are upping WW damage from 800% to I think 1500% or.something like that too? If so, then I can foresee myself doing a great many things with the updated Rend lol. I am on XB1 and don't have internet yet but when I still used Rend (before I looked here and found that using Rend is a no go atm with this build) in was killing lots of stuff pretty quickly. So, looking forward to using Rend again lol

Indeed, 2.6.1 is bringing basically all the sets increased damage and giving the lacking mechanics (like above) a little bit more viability so more builds can be used in top play!

bul kathos set gives attack speed and move speed

istvan set gives attack speed, damage and armor

with istvan set we use wind shear rune which gives 1 fury per hit for each enemy. so we are almost always at top fury as long as we hit some enemy.

1 idea about istvan setup;

we use Battle Rage-Sword to Ploughshares for life steal and give up area damage granted by Bloodshed. so what if we enchant one weapon with Life Per Hit and switch to Bloodshed rune. doesnt it provide more recovery and damage ??

edit: tried on PTR and it seemed better. i improved my best time.

Please note that the gear guide is erroneous: ORotZ will always roll AS, CHC, CDR and RCR (which will be rolled to slot if one chooses to wear it). Thus, it's impossible to get CHD in ORotZ - skull grasp is needed for the trifecta of CHC, CHD and CDR or AD (in addition to slot). Otherwise, it's ORotZ CHC, CDR, AS (not reaching a new bp without PE stacks so it's a useless stat) and CoE with CHC, CHD and AD.

Blizzard have moved the launch of Season 34 back a week!
While it was supposed to start today, Blizzard cite players not wanting the new D3 and D4 season launches to overlap on the same week, and needing more time to get the season properly set up, as the previous one ended early.
      Season 34 Delay (Source)
      Hi all
We have shifted the start for the new season of Diablo III to next week. This is due to a few items:
We received a good amount of feedback that many didn’t want overlap with the first weekend of Diablo IV’s new season. We agree so we are building out that gap and will be more mindful of that going forward.
This will help us properly ensure account states migrate over as we had an issue with the prior season rolling early and us having to kick things back on.
You can find the exact times on our Season 34 blog.

Blizzard has posted an official preview of Diablo 3's upcoming Season 34 that starts on January 24!
The ongoing Season 33 ends on January 19. Season 34 reintroduces the Light's Calling Season theme, which means players can obtain Angelic Crucibles, consumables that may be used to Sanctify any Legendary item, infusing it randomly with one of three new class-specific powers. Cosmetic rewards for the patch are as follows:
Completing the Season 34 Guarian journey grants the Book of Cain pet and the Lost Civilization Portrait Frame.
Haedrig's Gift will award you with the following sets in Season 34:
Barbarian - Horde of the Ninety Savages Crusader - Aegis of Valor Demon Hunter - Gears of Dreadlands Monk - Patterns of Justice Witch Doctor - Mundunugu’s Regalia Wizard - Typhon’s Veil Necromancer - Masquerade of the Burning Carnival For more information about Season 34, check out the official blog post below.

Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 34: Light’s Calling. Starting on January 24 at 5 p.m. PST/CET/KST, Nephalem can harness the power of the Light’s Calling theme, which first debuted with Season 27. For an in-depth look at what’s coming, take a gander below. Also, Season 33 will officially come to an end on January 19.
      Seasonal Journey
      Season Theme
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
      Season Journey Rewards
      Seasonal Conquest
      Haedrig’s Gift
      Season Theme
Looking to turn the tide of an unremitting war between light and darkness, the Angels of the High Heavens have embedded a token of their righteousness in Sanctuary. Cunning Nephalem seeking an advantage in combat will undergo an angelic trial, crystallizing a symbol of their morality into pure, otherworldly perfection. The specific celestial force imbued within by the divine is unknown—an answer waiting to be sought on the battlefield. Go forth, Nephalem!
Season 34 reintroduces Light’s Calling. Valiant Nephalem who recover Angelic Crucibles, a new consumable item, may use them to Sanctify any equippable Legendary item, infusing it with one of three new class-specific powers at random. We wanted to use Angelic Crucibles to lean into the expertise of each class, further exemplifying its respective prowess, but through a nuanced lens. The High Heavens are home to ethereal splendor, bursting with boundless radiance—we wanted to provide players with a taste of untainted power as doled out from Heaven itself.

      Season Cosmetic Rewards
In Season 34, awards originally available from Season 10 are returning. In addition to the Head and Shoulder slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn the Black Soulstone themed portraits and the scholarly Loremaster pennant first introduced in Season 10.

However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve participated in previous Seasons. We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic ones for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Prove your worth alongside the Shades of the Nephalem and complete the Season 34 Guardian Journey to earn the Book of Cain pet and the Lost Civilization Portrait Frame.

      Season Journey Rewards
If you’ve been diligently slaying demons before and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of five:
Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within five minutes. Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55. All I Do is Win: Complete two Conquests this Season. Life Goes On: Kill Maghda at level 70 in under 15 seconds on Torment XIII difficulty. Money Ain’t a Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty. Treasure Goblins outside of Nephalem Rifts will sometimes open portals to Greed’s domain, The Vault. Take U There: Reach Greater Rift Level 60 Solo. Greater Rift keystones can be obtained from any Nephalem Rift guardian. Power Amplification: Use Kanai’s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a level 50+ gem. Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanai’s Cube to reforge a Legendary item. Return to Top
      Seasonal Conquest
Seasonal Conquests are additional goals you can complete as part of our Season Journey. To earn all the cosmetic rewards, you'll need to complete at least three of the Conquests below. The challenges available in Season 34 include:
Sprinter and Speed Racer task you with completing Acts I through V at max level in under one hour. Want to go fast while killing things? Boss Mode and Worlds Apart are right up your alley. On A Good Day and I Can’t Stop are making a return, if leveling your Legendary Gems is more your thing. Finally, if you’re keen to prove your mastery of various Class Sets, Years of War and Dynasty will be returning along with Masters of the Universe and Masters of Sets. Best of luck! Return to Top
      Haedrig’s Gift

Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works.
Completing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts. These contain a few pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set in this manner per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose wisely!
The set you receive depends on the class of the character you’re playing when you open each Haedrig’s Gift. To collect a full Class Set, you’ll need to open all three on the same character. In this season, Haedrig's Gift will grant all-new class sets introduced with previous Seasons.
Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 34:
Barbarian - Horde of the Ninety Savages Crusader - Aegis of Valor Demon Hunter - Gears of Dreadlands Monk - Patterns of Justice Witch Doctor - Mundunugu’s Regalia Wizard - Typhon’s Veil Necromancer - Masquerade of the Burning Carnival Return to Top

It seems something went very wrong with Season 33, as it it just... ended a while ago. Players took to the forums as there was no early warning, other than a server message around an hour before it all ended. PezRadar responded clarifying that this is not intended and that Blizzard are looking into what happened.
      Season End (Source)
Heard and got some pings while I’ve been out and I have production checking on this early end. This shouldn’t have ended today so something is funky. Will provide an update once I hear back.
