Green Fire: Quest Line + Kanrethad strategy

Recommended Posts

For the boss initially hitting you at the start are you sure your lord is hitting him after the enslave? I've made that mistake entirely more times than I'd care to admit. The imps usually bounce back and forth between me and the fel but ember tap sees me through it.

Procrastination seems to be paying off though, up till today I couldn't get him below 40% now I'm averaging 20% before I nub something up or the game messes with me. This last attempt his rain of fire was american express because it was everywhere I tried to be.

Edit: I was literally shaking for the last 10% but I got em! Thanks for the macros and guides. Im spending all day tomorrow riding my green horse!

I have gotten the first part down pretty well now, I am able to kill all the imps with no problems, however as soon as I kill them all he cats chaos bolt at me and it kills me every time because I don't have enough health to absorb it all, even using sac pac and and twilight ward as he is casting his chaos bolt at me. Anyone have any revisions to this quest since 5.4 has now come out?

If you're getting Chaos Bolt, it means you're not doing a good job at managing your aggro and gate debuff.

The gateway no longer drops threat since 5.4

I handled Chaos Bolts by LoSing them.  Demonic Circle behind a pillar, good to go.  Works, and that should not have changed since 5.3. :)

I just finished this quest line. I am not sure if I can add more useful info than what you can already find in this thread, but please let me thank the great community here that helped me through this forum to achieve this accomplishment. I salute you all friends.

I finally got my green fire took around 15 attempts, but until the time I finally beat him I couldn't get passed the 2nd stage of hounds. On the attempt where I beat him I died when he was around 4000k health and quickly soul stoned and then two doom guards, kanrethad and the pit lord attacked, I managed to tame the pit lord and get my health back up and then when he was around 1000k I made the mistake of charging his chaos bolt. I was spamming shadowburn and thought i had died because I had 40k health left and realized that it was the cut scene for beating him! What a fight haha

Having been on this quest since it was released and failing miserably in my early attempts I revisited it the other day (561 now). Hearth to Shrine (no idea where I was before), port to Shat, fly to Black Temple, kill the boss, wait for Hearthstone to finish cooldown...

Is there any way to do the fight again (besides rerolling) so I can use old gear and actually relish in the challenge?

You can do the fight whenever you want.  Just go to the big gate in front of Black Temple and start the scenario.

I didn't contribute a whole lot to this thread compared to some of these other awesome people, but I'm glad I was able to help you out.  :)

Grats on radioactivity!

Firstly big thanks to everyone who contributed to these threads here. This was a pretty epic ride. Very enjoyable even with over 100 wipes.

Ended up doing this with 532 item level just before doom hit, but actually I think I could have done it with 490 gear if I’d corrected myself earlier. (608k health buffed with Drums/Flask/Stam food)

I long retired from raiding so some work was needed to do this, my improvements were:-

  1. If you think your movement/ability to DPS well on the move is junk – it probably is. Re-work it. In my case add a 14 button mouse. Massive improvement.
  2. Glyphs – don’t just do what everyone says you should. Only use 1 Healthstone but hit ember tap 8 times? Swap to ember tap glyph.
  3. Reduce clutter on screen and buttons to press. Go passive effect where you can. Glyph of eternal resolve for example removes one cool down I was not overly using for IMO a good return 10% damage reduction passive effect for example.

Fight wise :-

  • I could never drop aggro consistently well enough, so I gave up trying to. IMO go hell for leather from the moment you start, this seems to keep the pit lord positively healthy at the end.
  • Have discipline and use Fel Breath all the time it's off CD (esp. for the seed)
  • Forget the portals and gateways totally as you are not trying to drop aggro (reduces brain pressure)
  • Soak all Chaos bolts with ‘sac, forget the LOS (Reduce brain pressure again having to hide)
  • Priority 1 > Obsess about being 100% healthy and dot free (Ember tap FTW)
  • Keep moving.
  • 1 CB per cataclysm, save embers for Fel Puppies (2 ideally) and Ember tap
  • Keep moving.
  • Immolate/conflag/incinerate/Rain on him all the time you can. This was really lots of incinerate on the move.
  • On the Imps I was using Rain -> Stun -> F&B -> Immolate/Incinerate until dead until after Doom Lord 2 when I started ‘harvest’ them (More brain pressure reduction to actually get to the later stages rather than try to max DPS)

Keep at it if not done, you’ll get there with a bit of analysis biggrin.png

I hope this gets some protection from being out-geared too far as it's one of the best things they've done. I’d imagine L560+ gear with super cloak/gem is less satisfying already

I really hope that too. I know it would be disappointing to some, but the challenge of learning to beat this fight made me a better warlock and has carried forward in my play today. Cheesing it with level 650 in the next expansion would just be a sad thing.

You can cheese the fight now at around a 520 ilvl. If you just Rain of Fire the imps to generate a crapload of embers, you can chaos bolt him over and over until he dies.

Finally finished this after so many failed attempts.  Never could get the rotation down and was only able to barely make it to the 2nd imp phase.  Then finally everything just clicked and flowed together.  No tunnel vision.  And thanks to RoF and the imps I had unlimited embers to blast away during execute.  Looking back it seems way easy.

I finally got him! So exciting to have gotten him and have my green fire now!

Initially I made a lot of errors, but in my last few tries I got the fel puppies killed and from then on I knew I could do it.

My biggest issues were cleansing, positioning of myself, and enslave on my pitlord. Once I remembered to reenslave him before Doom Lord, I was fine! I also used a pot of purification just to ensure I had enough time left for sure. I had my portals set up from one end of Kan's portal to the other so I could quickly use it to get to my portal and to also get to the spot to kill fel puppies. Remembering to soul shatter was also crucial compared to my other attempts! Once I got those sorted and remembered, I stood by the boss or close to him to be able to still use my portal in chaos bolt times (as I failed using the damage reduction cd's). Cleansing got a heap easier when I did it this way and the only times I used my imp's (RIP, little buddy) singe was during a chaos bolt after I had LOS Kan, or when I was on fel puppies and couldn't get my pitlord out. I had issues with him being dispelled to charge Kan if I wasn't quick enough so it was certainly all about the burn on the puppies with havoc. I usually used a chaos bolt on the first one, RoF and then havoc and burst down the other... it gave me enough time to get into position in case my threat reduction didn't work and I copped a chaos bolt, OR cataclysm time came up.

I admit I got quite nervous at first but the more attempts I did, the better it was. I learnt that everything happens exactly as describe by fellow locks. It's always the same each phase until the 3rd lot of imps, in which case stay alive and kill!! I think I got a bit impatient, and instead of listening/watching everything I just threw myself into the fight and kind of WTF'd when something happened - I just wasn't paying attention sometimes.

I wish future locks good luck, stick with it because eventually it will become easier the more you try and learn the fight! :)

I just got my warlock to 90, my original vanilla character I played to 60 and 35 days at cap, and have all the timeless pieces except a weapon and amulet, reaching about level 488. I feel like my dps is very poor as I spent most of my 60-cap time using the dark apotheosis setup and not practicing the true demon form DPS usage of stockpiled demonic fury and soul fire proc stacks. I don't really want to use destruction for this, never tried it I play warlock for the demon style.

Doing this fight I learned how to take out the fel hounds by putting corruption on all 3, then going demon and rotating between them with doom and touch of chaos/chaos wave. I no longer have to pull them to the stairs and just fight them right at the middle.

This has become a lower iLevel demonology guide---- Read on for tips

There are two extremely difficult aspects of this battle outside of the debuffs you have to keep off yourself, that can be mastered even when you aren't doing insane DPS:

I view this as 2 phases
-Initial phase: Movement of the pit lord and DPS tactics for destroying the felhounds
-Post hounds: Destroying the imps properly while juggling re-enslave necessity, damage/debuff mitigation, and doom lord cc, while tracking your ultimate doom timer

Macros to help the pit lord running between hiding spot and the boss:

So I don't have to click both plus the ground location this sets him passive and gives me the move cursor
/petmoveto
/petpassive

Engage macro sends him back up from the hiding spot.

/petfollow
/petassist
/target kanrethad
/petattack

This macro works even when not in range to actually cast on the boss, he still runs back up on aggressive to the boss from the hiding spots.
This is essential to hit right after enslave to set to assist mode. When he is in the default defensive he tends to try to follow you around and not keep attacking the boss.

My re-enslave macro (target pit lord, petdismiss, and cast enslave) sits next to health funnel and soul shatter. I tend to use these all at the same time to ensure the best aggro reset and overall benefit. First health funnel, then re enslave, then soul shatter, then engage macro

I am using both the fel breath macros, one that ensures it will be cast on kanrethad and always retarget him, and the other to cast [@player] so I can direct it on imps if they run too far out and get my dispels.

Talents - standard set except for my low DPS drain life is extremely necessary. Soul leech isn't working well for me. Shadowfury, sac pact, unbound will, grim of sac, archimonde's darkness

Glyphs  -
Healthstone - Used to reup my health after killing the hounds or after taking damage from imps and doom lords in the final phase.
Drain life - more healing to help keep it together in the post hounds phase.

Imp swarm - very much helps control when I have wild imps for the demonic fury and makes sure there aren't just a bunch of random ones drawing attention of his imps.

Enslave Demon -essential for pit lord or he can stun us (OR HEAL THE BOSS) before we can enslave
Health Funnel - It should ensure the pit lord can always survive, but generates ridiculous threat against the doom lords.

Basic sequence of the fight

---imps killed with breath, charge boss +breath, sometimes takes a 3rd breath (stand about a pit lord length behind the boss the ensure the imps walk out into a good spot, your pit lord stands in the right spot by default when he's aggressive on Kan following the center phases)
---Pit lord hides in back right pillar out of los of portal right after cataclysm stun ends, pulling felhound to the opposite corner to the steps while burning them down. If they are dead by the time you get to the pillar just send the pit lord back to re-engage and head toward him to get ready for charge on cataclysm
---If you need extra time just go down the steps a little bit and finish them off while he is doing cataclysm. You're safe out of the green glow on the floor of the room. Send pit lord back with the macro as soon as cataclysm cast is over in this case
------Run back and re-enslave with macro as doom lord is coming up. Have to do this both times or else you will have enslave break and screw you up.
Repeat
----Reset ultimate doom curse with potion a little after 2nd re-enslave
Hopefully the boss is dead by around this time as you only have about 4 minutes before another re enslave is necessary, so watch out and do it between cataclysm burn phase and the beginning of the next imp summon
-----Use Sacrificial pact and shadow ward to absorb chaos bolt, important to be healed up so this is effective (why I keep drain life talent) you can avoid it most of the fight if you are proactively using soul shatter, charge and fel breath right after re enslave and watching out for threat
--- soul stone - last ditch effort, ensure all imps are down and let cataclysm happen. stone up, shadow fury, and re enslave, blow doom guard as you have to be close to winning here(or infernal if you have some dodgy imps hanging around shooting you)

If you use soulstone, the pit lord will still be enslaved while you're dead but it breaks when you stone up. You also lost the sacrifice buff... so pulling that off is extremely clutch.

Winning this fight without significant gear comes down to perfect execution every time on each transition.

demonic siphon, healing you, snaps decent healing threat to the pit lord

I tend to fear the 2nd doom lord whenever I have the chance and especially in the beginning of my enslave cycle when I am likely to have aggro on him. there's no good way to macro it out since you can't have 2 focus targets and you almost always end up with the focused on when attempting /tar doom lord in the macro.

Next best is mouseover paired with nameplates

/cast [@mouseover] fear

Doing this ensures you aren't taking damage from the doom bolts and neither is the pit lord.

For imps I am hitting breath 3/4 through the summon cast to snag the initial ones, , then putting down shadowfury to stop them for long enough for the breath cooldown to come back for charge + breath on all of them. Sometimes coming in with hellfire to mop them up in the 2nd half of the battle.

Destruction guides advise you to let the imps live so you can abuse them for execute damage. Doesn't have any benefit for my spec.

I am able to use charge immediately after cataclysm and it comes up with a bit of time to spare for the next cataclysm while used this way. I see this as essential to succeeding with this strategy. You will deal 3% of the boss HP just by every 3 fel breaths along with good charge timing.

The fight was designed to be over right around when the 2nd doom lord comes, obviously the 7 minute timer is reaching the end right after that when 3rd imps wave is happening.

After resetting ultimate doom there are 2 remaining worries - re enslaving properly so you can make use of the additional minutes that weren't supposed to be part of the fight, and wiping out the imps perfectly every time. If you don't they pile up and start to deal too much damage to you.

I am 480s with a 450 weapon and ghost iron dragonling/ timeless trinket. By the end of the first 7 minutes I typically have the boss down to 16 / 31----- The potential dps I can deal in the second ultimate doom timer is greater because I don't have to stop damage for felhounds, but incoming damage is worse while juggling imps and doom lord cc.

I completed it today 2/12 on the first attempt of the day after restocking my consumables (lol). Turns me into the big green ILLIDAN and damn it looks sweet. Looking at my gold left, it must have been about 60 attempts to learn both main phases, estimating generously 10 hours spent doing the fight. Never had to use the soulstone, had 2 minutes left on the 2nd ultimate doom. I used doom guard in the very beginning and infernal on the imps that started getting out of hand when the cooldown came up.

Follow up!

Boosted myself a 2nd lock after playing 1-60 for fun in favorite quest zones and dungeons. Wanted an Orc and Human. To deck my orc out in Corruptor Raiment.

I determined that the stairs and pillars are completely unnecessary, you can shove the pit lord in the nook directly to left or right of the portal and then drag the fel hounds toward the other nook.

It's still best if you watch threat during the FELHOUNDS phase to ensure chaos bolts won't be coming at you untill you're in the 2nd phase burning him down while you're only worried about the imps and doom lord CC. They can easily be dealt with by either the Sac shield or demon leaping toward the nook as soon as he starts casting, to LOS out of it.

Using the nooks, you don't have to lose so much time and attention running to the safe spot, and you can actually pit lord charge the last 2 fel hounds easily to finish them off and have a little time before cataclysm to get in position better for the dismiss/enslave cycle.

Finally, I figured out how to have a 1 button sure fire banish macro

/target [@focus,noexists] doom lord

/focus [@focus,noexists]

/cast [@focus] banish

/target kanrethad

This allowed me to auto target the doom lord and banish it, plus keep the same button bound on F4 to handle rebanishing.

Kept the mouseover fear macro on F5 so I never had trouble doing that while juggling the positioning for the imp summon and taking care to survive.

Got my green fire the other day. This thread was key for me. I am not the greatest caster. I'm a wrath baby and I leveled a rogue to 55 and immediately rolled my DK main. I leveled my lock to 90 the old fashioned way (no boost) but never really did anything with it. Well now my lock is my main. The Kanrethad fight made me a better player and caster and before I knew it, I was playing the lock and not even logging in on the DK.

For those having trouble still, just keep at it. My biggest problem was every time I got his health to a new low i had yet to reach, I would freak out mentally. Like many said before me, learn each section of fight until you don't need to think about it.

I admit on the victorious attempt, I started wildly mashing buttons when he got to 5%. I'm still not sure how I didn't screw everything up! I then immediately went looking for blood pressure medication. Haha

Good luck to those still trying and gratz to those that got it :)

Made an account to post to this thread. First off, thanks for the guide, and for everyone that posted their experiences! I used a modified strategy, but a lot of the stuff here was sound. Never would have got there without doing a bunch of macros, really tuning my build, and getting some muscle memory. Took about 3 hours of really going for it. Congrats to everyone here that got their green!

For those of you still going: Don't give up! You can do it! Be calm, practice. If you're jamming buttons and your heart is racing, throttle it back. Learn to stay on the move, learn to have your pit lord breathe fire on you to get rid of the horrid horrid seeds, and use the big heal on cooldown. Use your healthstones and the occasional embers, don't freak when your health starts to drop a bit. Tips that worked for me:

  • Imps were one of the hardest things for me, getting the pit lord to reliably hit a lot of them. Shadowfury and then Charge helped me clean out a lot, and I'd stand in the middle of them and have him breathe on me so I'd be getting rid of debuffs while killing imps. Aggro dumping via the gateway also seemed to help.
  • For the felhunters, I parked my pit lord in one of the little hidey holes to either side of the portal. Remember, he's slow, so start him over there not too long after the Cataclysm. Havoc and Dark Soul are key for burning those buggers down. Unbound Will helps get over the hump and clear debuffs while you don't have your pit lord around.
  • Dismissing and re-enslaving the pit lord during the doom lord phase - spot on.
  • Banishing the doom lord didn't work for me, but just punch him in the mouth with the pit lord and run through your gateway again, and then he's a non issue.
  • Don't freak out when you see your Shadowburn light up. Slow and steady!
  • ...but not that slow! I finished him off with one second left before the curse ran out.
  • Soulstone! As long as your pit lord is still fighting, you can SS, but get ready to enslave him right quick. Macro!

Happy self-corrupting!
