Problems with Mana Management

For starters, I am just coming back to my lock after a 6yr hiatus.  I read up on the changes, and adjusted myself accordingly.  I have some HFC gear, but still mostly heirloom/crafted.

 

  My problem is playing DESTRUCTION,  I am burning through mana fairly quickly.  Without mana tap, what can I do for mana or managing my mana use?

Wait, what? Mana problems as DESTRO? ...I don't even know how you could have that issue unless you are spamming Soul Burn 100% of the time or summoning a demon 100% of the time or being effected by some really weird glitch.

 

Since you are in "Some HFC gear" I assume you're max level...um...

 

Ya, I have no idea how to help you, sorry. Mana management as destro just isn't a thing, your passive regen should be so high that it is just impossible to run out of mana unless one of the weird things I listed above is happening.

 

Can you provide a video or logs of when this happened?

Maybe if you're spamming Rain of fire? that's the only way you can go oom as destro

Rain of fire on your bars?! But you could put a non-combat pet or a mount on that hotkey and have it be twice as useful!

I am only spamming chaos bolt when I have full embers and Soulburn up.  I know I am clipping immolate to make sure it is up when I need it, but that is really it.

 

I'll post a test dummy video to show.  I mean it's not like I am oom'ing completely and having to stop casting.. but after about 2 to 3min in, I am riding that oom line.

  Here is the video.  As I watch it, I also have the following question:  Am I supposed to weave Chaos Bolt as I am casting, as opposed to waiting until my ember bar is full and draining it?  I did notice that my mana bar goes back up to full during my chaos bolt spam.

You want to hover at around 2.5-3.5 embers. You never want to cap. 

 

Cast CB when you:

 

You have a strong proc (trinket, boss mechanic, CD, etc.)

 

Or 

 

Above 3.2-3.5 embers

 

Try never to go below 2 embers so you always have something in the tank in case of procs.

 

If you do the destro rotation correctly you will never have mana issues.

Ok, so I spent the last 9hrs working on the ember count and timing CB.  mana is def getting better.  Thanks for the help.

Non Charred Remains Destruction has historically suffered from going OOM when you have poor gear. It was prevalent in the first raid instances in both MoP and WoD.

 

Just need to remember that (until Legion) mana = energy. As long as you are managing your embers and backdraft stacks properly, going OOM does not mean you are playing incorrectly (unless you were playing incorrectly, can't watch the vid as on mobile).

From what I can tell he's using incinerate too often without CBing. This is a very possible way to oom yourself especially without CR. Once he gets the "feel" for how many incinerates to cast before a chaos bolt he should be fine. I don't typically play destro but from what i've seen I typically oom on opener (largely irrelevant) while getting my starter embers then get in a groove of 2-4 incinerates, chaos bolt, repeat.

 

I Hover around 30-50% mana and recharge fully during CB spam. Then drop back down to 30-50. Rinse and repeat. However I do have the normal archi trinket on my lock.

I think I get what you're saying, but there isn't a set number of Incinerates you should or shouldn't cast between Chaos Bolts. It's all about the situation (how many embers you have, whether or not you have procs/Dark Soul up, if an add needs to be burst down, etc.) that determines when you cast Chaos Bolt, not a cast order in a rotation. I apologize if that's not what you were implying, I just wanted to clarify.
