Cataclysm Timewalking Weekend!

Recommended Posts

RtNbWR3.jpg

Looking for something to do over the next few days, but you're not sure what? Why not take part in the final appearance of Cataclysm Timewalking before Legion?

We are now entering the run-up to the new expansion and with that comes the final appearances of each weekly bonus event. While the events will still be there in Legion, they won't be playable until at least 4 weeks after launch, so make the most of it now!

Below you can find our guide to the Cataclysm event, which has information on item rewards and general tips. Enjoy! If you're looking for information about other events this month, check out our monthly survival guide

This week's event is going to be taking us back into the shattered realm of Cataclysm dungeons with our level and gear scaled down to level 85. The dungeons included in this event are as follows:

  • Grim Batol
  • The Stonecore
  • Lost City of Tol'vir
  • The Vortex Pinnacle
  • Throne of the Tides
  • End Time

Today we're going to be giving you a run-down of the most efficient methods for farming Timewalking, the best way to gear for it, what you can get for it and how it all works.

What is Timewalking and how does it work?

Timewalking is essentially Blizzard's way of allowing us to re-visit the old content that we all look at with rose-tinted glasses, then force us to farm it so that we never ask for them to implement old servers.

Really though, Timewalking is basically just re-doing the old dungeons with the same level of gear you would have had in that expansion. Talents and abilities are the same. Throughout each dungeon, the bosses drop a currency by the name of Timewarped Badges. The bosses also have a chance to drop gear depending on your real level, before the dungeon scaling. At level 100, this gear is item level 660, but can drop as warforged resulting in an item level of 675. The gear will not level with you, instead staying at the level you earnt it.

Why would I bother with Timewalking?

Timewalking is arguably the most efficient way to gear a character up in a short space of time when reaching level 100. Admittedly, the gear is not the highest item level, but it works for a fresh level 100. Through the use of drops from bosses and gear bought from the vendor, you can very quickly find yourself with a full set of 660-675 gear. It's also important to remember the weekly event quest, A Shattered Path Through Time, which grants a inv_treasurechest_felfirecitadel.jpgIron Fleet Treasure Chest, 1 bonus roll seal and 500 Valor.

The mount dropped from any Timewalking dungeon, the Infinite Timereaver.

For those of you that are already geared and don't care about the item drops, there are plenty of toys at the vendors to be bought and normally an event specific mount, but Cataclysm Timewalking does not have one yet. There are also a number of reputation rewards to be earnt. Below is a list of the rewards you can buy from the Cataclysm event:

Vendor: Kiatke. (Found in Stormwind and Orgrimmar)

Mount: There is no event specific mount for Cataclysm Timewalking.

Toys: inv_misc_enchantedpearlf.jpgGurboggle's Gleaming Bauble, inv_helmet_170.jpgTosselwrench's Mega-Accurate Simulation Viewfinder.

Gear Slots: Weapon, waist, legs, back, head, trinket.

Faction Reputation Commendations: Therazane, Earthen Ring, Ramkahen, Guardians of Hyjal, Wildhammer Clan, Dragonmaw Clan.

Heirloom Items: inv_icon_heirloomtoken_weapon01.jpgAncient Heirloom Scabbard, inv_icon_heirloomtoken_armor01.jpgAncient Heirloom Armor Casing, inv_icon_heirloomtoken_weapon02.jpgTimeworn Heirloom Scabbardinv_icon_heirloomtoken_armor02.jpgTimeworn Heirloom Armor Casing.

How can I farm these badges quickly?

The currency for all of these items, Timewarped Badges, is quite a laborious task to farm. We're here to help you know exactly how many of these dungeons you need to farm and how quickly you can be doing them.

First, let's outline all the places these badges come from:

  • Item drop from the first dungeon you complete: 500 badges. (Once per event)
  • Call-to-Arms bonus: 50 badges.
  • Completing a dungeon: 10 badges.
  • Normal boss kill: 5 badges.
  • End boss kill: 10 badges.

When attempting to farm these badges, I would recommend finding another 4 people that are aiming for a similar number of badges. Since players below level 100 can queue up, often their lack of abilities can slow the run down quite a bit. Find other players and queue as a group of 5.

The next thing to make sure your runs are quick and smooth is gear. I'm sure you think I'm a bit strange suggesting farming gear since everything is scaled down, but some gear is better than others in Timewalking. Take a look at some of our tips:

  • Legendaries are amazingly powerful

This goes without saying, but I feel I should bring it up anyway. Legendary effects work in Timewalking and they are simply incredible. In certain instances, legendaries such as the legendary cloaks can make you destroy the DPS of other players in your group.

  • Gem slots don't scale down

One of the biggest boosts to your output is going to be gems. Gems in Timewalking are simply incredible. Take the scenario of a Cataclysm dungeon in which you have on inv_bracer_plate_raiddeathknight_k_01.jpBracers of Destructive Strength. The bracers will give you a base stat of +9 strength, but there are two red gem slots. We can fill these gem slots with epic gems to allow for a bonus +20 strength. I'm sure you can see how this adds up over all your items.

Make sure to farm gear that has a large number of gem slots regardless of the other stats on the item.

If you are looking for a Best-in-Slot gear list, make sure to check out this spreadsheet.

  • Make sure you don't use any %-based trinkets

The best example I can give to support this claim is the Warrior class trinket from Archimonde, ability_fomor_boss_pillar02.jpgWorldbreaker's Resolve. When used at level 100, it grants a 21.96% bonus on its effect at item level 705. If used in Cataclysm Timewalking, the bonus drops to 1.82%, rendering it useless.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
