How to Obtain the Sea Turtle and the Riding Turtle (and some Gold on the side)

Recommended Posts

Want to ride a turtle? Find out how to grab these rare mounts during the Legion pre-patch!

ulPb8lQ.jpg

Introduction

Since the release of the pre-patch Blizzard has changed the way in which you loot items. Previous mobs that were only lootable by one player can now be looted by groups of players.

You may have seen, heard or read about players using these new loot changes to be able to obtain the two rare turtle mounts Riding TurtleRiding Turtle and Sea TurtleSea Turtle.

In this guide I will help to explain how you can get hold of these mounts pretty easily (compared to before the pre-patch).  I will also be giving you a few hints and tips on how you can use a lot of the items you loot to make some gold on the side as well!

One thing to note - this method does seem a little "broken".  Although not an exploit I imagine that Blizzard will probably make some move to make changes to the looting system again - in other words - get hold of these mounts NOW while you have the chance.

For those that aren't familiar with my gold making guides I hope you read some of the gold making tips towards the end of the article!  Might as well make some spare change while you have the chance!

The Method

For those that may or may not be aware - it is possible to fish up Lunarfall CarpLunarfall Carp (for alliance) and Frostdeep MinnowFrostdeep Minnow (for horde) in your garrison next to your fishing shack.

These can then be thrown back into the lake to summon a Lunarfall Cavedweller and a Frostdeep Cavedweller (respectively).  It is these mobs that have the chance to drop both of the turtle mounts. To be able to fish up the carp and the minnow you need to have the achievement Draenor AnglerDraenor Angler. The achievement is obtained by fishing up 100 of each of the Enormous fish in Warlords of Draenor and it unlocks the blueprint for your level 3 garrison fishing shack. As far as I am aware it is not possible for anyone without the achievement to be able to fish the carps / minnows (I have asked a few guild members to test for me but as their drop rate is low I haven't been able to 100% confirm this). Lunarfall CarpLunarfall Carp  and Frostdeep MinnowFrostdeep Minnow have about a 3% chance to be fished up in your garrison. I am not 100% certain but I have been informed that your fishing skill does have an effect on the drop chance so ensure you are wearing as many fishing skill boosts as you can (some are listed below).

So why are players doing this now?

Previously, only the player that tagged the Cavedweller mob was eligible for loot.  That meant many players solo fished in their garrison which obviously took a long time.  Since the changes to loot have been implemented in the new patch it is now possible for a raid group of up to 40 players to loot each and every Cavedweller that is summoned.  So it is possible to have a group of 40 players all fishing for carps and minnows giving you much more loot and loot chances to get hold of the mounts.

The drop rates for both the  Riding TurtleRiding Turtle and Sea TurtleSea Turtle are below 0.5%.  So having a 0.5% drop from a 3% drop shows how rare these items were previously.

With more carps / minnows being fished, there are more Cavedwellers to loot, therefore considerably improving your cahnces of getting hold of the turtle mounts!

I don't have the fishing achievement what can I do?

If you do not have the fishing achievement you aren't able to fish up the carps or the minnows but you ARE eligible to loot the Cavedwellers.  This means that you don't actually need the achievement to loot the mounts themselves.  Just be aware that the majority of group leaders are wanting to maximise the number of potential carps and minnows that can be fished up, so many groups require the players to link the achievement and actively fish.

It is possible to get invited to some of the groups (or possibly create your own).  Just remember that without the achievement you won't be able to fish up the carps / minnows yourself so you are "leeching" from the rest in the group. Be aware that it may take a kind group leader or a long time for you to get into one!

What Items Do The Cavedwellers Drop

This is the important bit for those that wish to make some gold as well as get hold of the mounts!  The Cavedwellers have quite a large loot table of which a large proportion is tradeable.  This includes all fish flesh (except saberfish), some fishing equipment that will help you to get more carps, and some vanity / tradeable items that should be able to net you some gold. (Pun intended).

Importantly too - the Cavedwellers also have a chance to drop Nat's Lucky CoinNat's Lucky Coin which is the currency for Nat Pagle and can be used to obtain a few other items as well.

I will try and list the items in groups below.  Note I have not listed every item, but these should give you a good indication what you can obtain while fishing and looting the Cavedwellers.

Mounts

Pets / Toys

Fishing Skill Increases

Tradeable Goods

A lot of the tradeable goods are vanity items.  Note that these can't be transmogged as they are only common quality - however they have been known to be popular on level 1 "bank characters" so they still hold a little value.

Crafting Materials

Other Noteworthy Things

An important thing to note is that because a LOT of players are currently doing this the prices on ALL of these items that can be traded have dropped considerably.  Therefore there may be an opportunity to perhaps pick up some of these items while they are cheap, with a view to selling them for more gold in Legion and beyond.  If the method does get hotfixed or Blizzard readjust the loot rules then prices will also rise.

I don't recommend going crazy buying 100's of the compass toy for example, but use your judgement.

Keep an eye out for the Land Sharks and Sea Calfs as well.  Normally they sell anywhere from 5-30k depending on the pet level, quality and the server you are trading on.  If prices look to drop, again use your jugdement - this method may not last forever so could provide some great flipping opportunities.

Lil Leftovers

A great way to make use of the fish you are obtaining (or cheap fish from the auction house) is to try and cook up some 100+ stat food to obtain Lil' Leftovers.  Prices will probably dip a little on these pets over the next few weeks as well so try and buy some that are cheap.  One of my recent guides was based around this pet, and although I couldn't have predicted this new found fishing frenzy I am still 99.99% confident that these pets will increase in price in Legion.  For a thorough explanation check out my separate guide here

Wrap Up!

I hope you enjoyed this guide.  There are a number of Youtbe guides outling the process available as well if you want to learn more, but I hope you find the time to get into a group whether you have the achievement or not!

If anyone could confirm or deny any of the opportunities to fish up carps that would be great - it's hard for me to test when I already have the achievement :P!

Hi Guys,

i can't confirm, that the Lunarfall Crap does drop only if you have the achievement. See the pic below. I have Fishing Skill 679 +114 from gear and lure. I have 4 achievs open with this char (made the achievement with another char as well). Nat Pagle is in my Fishing Shack already (because it Rank 3).

So i think the first thing is that you have to be rank 3 at the fishing shack and the 2nd thing is that Nat have to be in your Garrison as Follower.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
