Unholy VS Frost PvE

Recommended Posts

So, I've read that Unholy is better, i'm wondering how much better Unholy is than Frost, since i enjoy playing Frost a lot more than i do Unholy, i wanna know if that's possible without shooting my self in the foot

View it kind of like how you view the mage class. Every patch one spec is better than the others however, all three are usually the top of the leaderboards, this is kind of the same situation. Frost is by all means a very strong spec, it does very well in a number of different situations. It's merely that unholy does it better. Also unholy has a little bit more flair with all its toys. You are far from shooting yourself in the foot choosing frost. Frost is still a strong spec its just over shadowed by unholy. So, its a fine choice.

also as far as "this class does more dps, or this spec does more dps"  frankly it doesn't matter for 99% of the playerbase. Unless you are pushing mythic progression (which statistically most player aren't) it really doesn't matter what you play, this is game, we are here to have fun, pick whichever spec you prefer. heck even in smaller servers they don't care about comp because its hard enough to find dedicated players.

tldr, unholy > frost but frost still a fine choice.

also we don't know what tuning will happen pre emerald dream, unholy could get nerf bagged into oblivion, no one knows.

I started out putting all my artifact power into Apocalypse, and just need the exploding ghouls trait now. But I learned that I like frost just as much, if not more, and just finished up Frozen Skin at level 108. I really want to be able to play both specs, don't plan on doing raiding minus lfr/normal raids. I guess I'm asking if I could keep my frost/uh artifacts balanced enough to where I can switch between them whenever. Sorry for the long post and if this isn't the right place to post. Thanks for any tips/advice.

it depends how much time you want to put into the game but short answer is yes. you can keep them rather comparable to each other and later on they are adding "Catch up" mechanics to help facilitate players coming to the expansion late and or people playing with multiple artifacts. in the early stages of the game thought, i might recommend pouring resources more to one than the other just so you have a stronger spec. view it almost as one being competitive and one being for fun.

so for example im blood/unholy. however, unholy is my main focus, i've put almost nothing into maw of the damned, however, i am able to tank just fine. so certainly for lfr, you could run in there with a brand new artifact and be fine, lfr is easy mode and is designed to be exceedingly friendly, however, for normal you would want one thats a little stronger. so i might recommend something like a 3-1 ratio (or something similar maybe less, 2-1). for every 300 ap you put into one, put 100-200 in the other.

tldr; you are fine leveling both and playing both specs,  but invest a little heavier in one of the two, just in case you need to meet dps checks in normal

Thank you very much for the advice. I am having a hard time deciding between frost and unholy, I always loved both. Frost is definitely easier for me, it just seems there is a decent amount of downtime with no runes/runic power during boss fights. But I am assuming that is from lack of gear/me playing bad :P. Also, one last question. I enjoy Clawing Shadows much more than Castigator, but does anyone happen to know how big of a dps difference there is between the two? I know that the stat priority changes if you use CS.

depending on how you are using frost you can end up without resources. if you find this is happening a lot talent into frozen pulse, you do damage when you are empty of runes.

what's currently being said is that while leveling CS and castigator are very close, however, at max level and with higher gear castigator pulls miles ahead. between castigator, high crit, and a specific legendary, you are basically shattering boils constantly. plus castigator has good synergy with other talents, with PP you will have high rune regeneration with it, so while the CS buff makes it powerful while leveling, it cannot compete with castigator :)

Yeah I just went with the machine gun talent build as frost because I figured I might as well. I use Epidemic instead of PP, what talents would you recommend for doing dungeons mostly? Heroic or Mythic, then eventually raiding. Just got Scourge of Worlds following Icy Veins artifact path for Unholy.

Hey, there. Just started using this forum and wanted to offer a short-story about these 2 competing specs. I posted this in a thread earlier on reddit.

I leveled as frost from 100-110, I loved frost, and felt like unholy was confusing and clunky. I was 110 within the first 36 hours of launch.

Fast forward a day and I am 820 item level looking to do mythic dungeons. Since mythic dungeons are as good as it gets with "progression", i felt obligated to start learning unholy.

So I switch to unholy to pump out the top tier damage, which it definitely does! It took me awhile to get used to, having to track buffs and debuffs more carefully...

Then inside Black Rook Hold, on the 2nd(maybe 3rd?) boss trash pulls, where the archers and mages are that channel that AoE shit, my group couldn't kill the mobs quick enough. This is on mythic version, where standing in the smallest amount of AoE with bad gear will 1 or 2-shot you.

Our group is lacking any type of CC and stun, so I switch to my frost spec that I have mastered. I do my remorseless winter with the stun talent and use my breath of sindragosa artifact ability, and we wipe the floor with the mobs that are stunned for 6 seconds because of my aoe stun.

I hope you read this far for my story, as I was in the same boat as you. I eventually conformed to Unholy, and even now in the most try-hard of settings you can be this early in the expansion, it is never a bad idea to keep an open-mind to keeping up to date with multiple specs, to get the best out of every situation you find yourself in.

I like UH, leveled as blood as it was miles easier to sustain myself against multiple mobs but I find UH a bit squishy for solo content. The DPS is very solid but if Im fighting multiple mobs I can explode easily enough.

I dont see any sustain from its talents from a quick view and even using DS doesn't seem to cut it very well at all. Now, my artifact has 4-5 points in it so far so its hardly optimal and my gear is not amazing, 810 and rising so hardly optimized yet.

Might be better with some practice.

In general it seems a lot of self healing has been reduced for non healer or tank specs. My pally's flash heal takes 50% of my mana bar. For unholy, I end up using my RP dump on death strike a lot of the time instead of death coil. Same with frost. I've gotten to the point where if I am tackling a strong add (ie elite or boss) I switch to blood just for the survival. You can spec into a higher dps version of blood and it will take longer to burn the boss, but if alone, you can get the job done. Soloing more elite enemies as unholy or frost has become burst the crap out of it, and hope I did enough damage to kill it before it kills me.

The Dark Swarm is looking for truly laid-back adults (18 and up) that want to have fun and be a part of a friendly, relaxed guild- perfect for people with the duties of full time jobs, families, and floating play time schedules due to the unpredictable availability life can cause.
We are always looking to meet new friends! We have an amazing group of people, and chat can be active in game and Discord (text), but we occasionally have lulls. Please be patient with us while we revitalize our roster!
Some things The Dark Swarm is:
► A guild who has been around since BC.
► A place for fun, mature people. You must be 18+ to join. Sense of humor strongly recommended ☺
► A guild interested in enjoying the game in our own ways. Some of us like to PvP, others like to run heroics, mythic+, and raids. Some like to level characters and professions, some love to collect things and camp rares. We welcome all styles of gameplay.
Some things The Dark Swarm is not:
► A raiding guild. If you are looking to raid on a team regularly, we are not for you. We have no interest in organizing progression raids for current content any longer. Any raiding outside of older content is done through PuGs/ LFG.
► A leveling guild. We accept characters of all levels, but we are looking for people who want to make us their permanent home, not leave once capped and geared.
► A hardcore PvP guild. Some of us do Arenas and Rated Battlegrounds, but if you want a guild who is strictly PvP oriented, we will not be a fit for your interests.
The Dark Swarm is interested in:
► Creating a tight- knit family of players who like to have a good time. Not a social butterfly? That's ok! If you are more comfortable with shutting off chat and just having a safe place for your characters, that is perfectly fine- we will be here for you if you want to interact or have questions.
► Guild events. We have had events in the past, and would be open to it again.
► Achievements. We enjoy getting groups together for achievements including metas for mounts, and guild achievements.
► Past content; we like to go back into some older content for fun from time to time as well. Examples are guild OS3D to get people Drakes, or BC raids for Transmog gear.
► Fun; most importantly, continue to be a relaxed environment to hang out in and meet fun people. Play when you want, the way you want.

      Other Info:
      ▪ We have a Community of the same name for Cross- Faction invites. Don't forget to select 'cross- faction' in the search filter!
      ▪ We are listed in the Guild Finder for easy invites!
      ▪ We use Discord for voice/text.  We are NOT active in our voice chats. Voice is generally only used when needed for groups or events, but are always available for members to use.

Welcome Adventurers! The time has come upon us, FINALLY! The moment in Classic WoW history us diehard, loyal WoW nerds have all been waiting for. WRATH CLASSIC! Arthas Did Nothing Wrong (ADNW) has just begun recruiting (For WotLK Classic) hard-core, casual, rp, pvp, pve, raiders, anything you can think of, you are welcomed here. Although our main focus in ADNW will be progressive raiding, 10 and 25 man and pvp content, we look to have someone for just about anything. Currently we are recruiting for our CORE 10M team composed entirely of irl / internet homies. We are in need of just 1 HEALER (Highly prefer a disc priest with a shadow off spec) and another DPS. Preferably lock or Shadow priest. We are looking to fill our B 10m team entirely, so we can pool together for 25 man’s when it comes time to crush 25m. This guild was founded by a group of tight nit friends recently, who have been around since TBC. WOTLK was our turning point in WoW, and we CANNOT wait to get another crack at this and MAKE IT RIGHT. Come join the adventure of a chill environment full of helpful hands and knowledge. Feel free to reach out to me Via Discord: Daevilmonkiexp#9239 OR Bnet: Daevilmonkie#1280 just let me know you are interested in the guild and we can have a convo! ARTHAS DID NOTHING WRONG!

      Approach to Raiding
We have a relaxed and chilled approach to raiding, but still expect people to make an effort.
As long as you don't show up freshly dinged in levelling greens, and make an effort to improve your gear and skills and show up to raids,
that is all we expect. We are here to enjoy ourselves, not push logs.
      About us
We are a chilled community who enjoys hanging out in discord while playing the game.
Karazhan is on farm, we are now looking to bolster our ranks to create a solid reliable 25 man raid team moving forward.

A mature environment for levelling and group play
Progressive but relaxed end game experience

      What We Expect
People willing to help build and grow a serious, successful and fun TBC raiding guild. We don’t care about your spec, everyone is welcome. While we are a casual guild, we still expect people to make an effort. Showing up freshly dinged in levelling greens won’t make the raiding experience fun for anyone.
      Our Aims
Our aims are to clear all the raid content in tbc in a relaxed and fun way. We were close to 25 raiders at 70 and ready to start raiding, but a lot of people quit the game and we are in need of new recruits for our 25-man raid teams. You read that correctly, one of the most iconic and long-standing guilds within the realms of Quel’Thalas and Azjol’Nerub is looking for new players to bolster its Mythic ranks.
Tell me more, tell me more!
Scion is a longstanding World of Warcraft guild consisting of both social and raiding players. We are a group of friendly people that are open for any player who is looking to improve his or her performance in the game while having an enjoyable stay.
      Did you get very far?
Our guild is currently progressing through the Mythic version of Shadowlands. We aim to get as much progress as possible before rushing into the new raiding content.
Enough Grease. Time for some raiding information.
We currently raid on Wednesdays and Sundays from 8PM-11PM server time with a raiding team that is constantly evolving into a strong example of leadership and teamwork. If you are looking to be part of this experience we are definitely looking for you!
      What are the requirements?
Preferably, you already have experience with Mythic raiding and obviously with raiding itself. The core requirement of Scion is that you are a well-organized player who can tend to the needs of a Mythic raiding team. Those needs consist of hard work, being self-critical and have a determined slash patient mindset.
      What’s in it for me?
The guild offers you an enjoyable and memorable time within the World of Warcraft. We are friendly bunch of social talkers who take joy out of a little banter from time to time. However, we strive to be as professional and hard-working as possible during raid hours and any time it takes to prepare for the challenge that raiding offers. Obviously, we look to provide assistance within this preparation by supplying resources and valuable information.
You won me over. I’m in it, to win it. Ha-ha.
That’s great! We are always eager to get in touch with curious and interested possible new recruits. Please contact one of the officers or guild master by adding either one of the following people: Beasted#2936
