Vengeance and Versatility

Recommended Posts

I'm curious just how married to Versatility as the primary stat are we as Vengeance?

I ask because I've noticed a marked upswing in my own success once I just started focusing on Haste and Mastery, in that order. Granted, what I've done so far tops out at Mythic 5mans (as of this writing nothing higher has been made available). Quicker CDs on some key abilities, Mastery affecting Demon Spikes + Attack Power+Damage/Healing from Soul Cleave, and the fact that it takes a lot of Versatility to move the needle, it FEELS better. I'm just curious if this is the kind of stat prioritization you see the benefit of once you get into the Heroic and Mythic and Mythic+ levels of content?

I've been tanking mythics and my daily heroic and I go for Mastery>Vers>Crit>Haste...but since I have three items for Veng and the rest is Havoc gear what I end up wearing is more like Crit>Vers=Haste>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Mastery.

I've stacking the Vers when I can because it is the best stat that serves both specs. However, if I was really going for VDH raiding I would go mastery>haste>vers=crit.

How do you figure this? The guide for vdh says exactly the opposite. Am I missing something here?

You're not missing anything, there is just a method to my madness. My stat prio isn't because of the math, it's because of play style and getting what I want from my tanking.

From the guide:

1.1. Survivability

Agility;
Versatility;
Haste >= Mastery;
Critical Strike.

1.2. Damage Output

Agility;
Mastery = Critical Strike >= Versatility >= Haste.

I go for survivability over damage 95% of the time on my tanks. Dead tanks are useless.

For survivability haste and mastery are basically equal mathematically, versatility is slightly ahead and then crit is a good ways behind the rest of them.

I hate versatility. It is the best stat for pure damage reduction, but it is also the most constricting. It gives no option for play style or skill level - it is one of the worst design decisions ever made from a high end raiding perspective.

Haste makes things come off CD faster.

Mastery makes Demon Spikes more powerful and gives AP and AP = self healing.

I'm a very high skill tank, I've tanked for years and at a world race level. I can get the absolute most out of my class just about at any time and because of that I gain more from being able to control my class as much as possible. As I said before, versatility does nothing for that. Thus I go for mastery/haste over verse. Personally haste is meh to me, I grab it when I can but I rather have mastery. Haste makes it so I have better uptimes and coverage but that isn't what normally kills me, what normally kills me is an "oh fuck" moment and mastery counters that perfectly.

So, in a purely theoretical environment yes - I do take a bit more damage then if I went vers>haste>=mast>crit. In a real raid, when there are mechanics to deal with and I can out skill the boss, I win.

This is a fantastic response, thanks.

I too have noticed that once you've mastered your rotation, while performing the correct mechanics for bosses, there doesn't seem to be much danger involved. The only exception are those 'oh shit' moments you talk about. It's nice to know that mastery can compensate for this more than the other stats.

Actually I think you are missing something. Namely this bit of the guide.

1.3. Dungeons

  1. Agility;
  2. Mastery;
  3. Critical Strike;
  4. Versatility;
  5. Haste.

Crit = Parry.

Parry not only reduces incoming damage, it also activates Blade Turning.

Blade Turning = Pain

Pain = Soul Cleave Healing which is based on Pain Spent.

I didn't miss it, I ignored it. "Dungeons" in this case means 5 man normal, 5 man heroic, and kind of 5 man mythic. It is okay for mythic+ until around M+4-ish depending on comp and skill.

Dungeons are the content right now but they won't be for long. Mythic+ has some good gear in them, but the real end game PvE will always be raiding. i won't build my character around 5 man content when what matters is 20man. That's like training all your life for double A ball when the MLB is just around the corner. I play the for the show, nothing less.

Also, crit does = parry but the conversion is quite bad. Stacking crit as a mitigation stat isn't nearly as effective as other stats. The reason it is recommended in Dungeons is because *generally* speaking the damage taken is so very low in 5 man content that the extra mitigation isn't needed but the added damage is quite useful.

Parry does activate Blade Turning, but Blade Turning is the worst talent on the tier so...you really shouldn't take it...so parry activating it is irrelevant.

Blade Turning's pain generation is not remotely close to the healing you get from the other two talents.

I'm with Locky on this one. I totally understand that mathematically, versatility is better, however I think that what most people fail to realize is actually how much versatility you need to actually gain 1% of any of the bonuses. Doing the quick napkin math on my own gear (armory hasn't updated after I changed a few pieces around), it looks like, if I'm correct, you need 400.09 rating to equal 1% increased damage and healing, and 800.17 rating to equal 1% flat damage reduction. Compare that to Mastery, which requires 233.37 rating for 1% physical damage reduction on demon spikes, and 279.75 rating for 1% Attack Power.

Now, looking at Haste, the cooldown reduction on Demon Blades at high Mastery levels is pretty huge. Haste also reduces the cooldown on Immolation Aura, which with Fallout, generates a pretty steady amount of soul fragments. So TL:DR, more immolation aura casts equals more souls, which means more healing.

This also doesn't take into account other talents like Spirit Bomb, Fel Devestation, Charred Warblades, Felblade, etc, all of these directly affected by Haste and Mastery increases in some fashion. Like Locky said, in a completely simmed environment, versatility is better; but in the real world, Haste/Mastery just feels better.

So a few misconceptions.

So far, many have only been able to tank up too Mythic 0 Dungeons. The stat prio for dungeons is for Mythic+. It also makes complete sense to fall in love with them in the dungeons as that is what they are best at. Which is why they were chosen for the M+ prio.

Vers and Mastery give very similar results. Vers is better on the abilities that favor Weapon Damage, and Mastery is better on the rest. The actual difference is very minor. Healing wise, Vers does the same. Defensively, Vers helps make up for some magic reduction as well as base reduction outside of DS, which is where we struggle. We don't have issues when Demon Spikes is up, so pumping full bore into it for a raid encounter, where you will have 50% or lower uptime, (~40% with no Haste) isn't as beneficial defensively. Whether or not it is boring is irrelevant when you are talking about min/maxing. If you really want to min/max, then you must deal with it.

Crit is not part of the Dungeon prio for Parry. The amount of parry required is high and it isn't worth aiming for. It is there for the burst dps and the occasional burst heal. It is not there for survival.

Haste is low on the prio because it is more about the sustain. Mythic+ are more about getting in and getting out as quickly as possible. You have time between pulls to take a second for a trinket, which helps you get back your cds etc.

I also keep seeing a lot that Vers "doesn't change anything with the spec and is therefor boring because it's static". What I want too know is, How do any of the other stats change the gameplay? Outside of Haste ofcourse. Vers gives damage/healing/baseline mitigation, Mastery gives damage/healing/mitigation on an ability you use regardless of the amount of Mastery you have, and Crit that just makes bigger numbers on the screen. 1/4 of the stats change the gameplay, and that 1 stat requires a decent amount to "change" the gameplay.

The prio for dungeons was made based on the experiences of several individuals, whom cleared Mythic+ 12 weekly, and pushed through to 14. If there is significant evidence against the prio, I have no problems changing it. Though many other top tier Tanks agree with it.

One other note, I only got the dps prio from sims, the rest were made manually.

Thank you so much for this final summary - especialy weight of mastery vs versa was very unclear for me.

I have one question: what crit % should we have to "rely" a bit on it? 30+ maybe? Cause right now I am sitting on high versa and mastery and only 23% crit, which isnt realy reliable imho - nor for extra heal, nor DPS gain..

With the planned upcoming changes to Demon Spikes (bumped up to 20% baseline) and Mastery (50% less damage reduction per point), what net effect do you expect to see? And how will it influence stat priority, if at all?

I'm guessing this makes stacking Mastery purely useless?

As long as they do the expected nerf of going from 150% to 100%, then nothing changes. If they nerf it more, then the M+ prio will change. We will have to wait and see.

      Hi Everyone,

      Returning to D3 after an absence.
      Trying to figure out the best desired stat rolls for items as per the guides, have always struggled with this.
      Am deciding to play DH Shadow Impale build this season 25. For example:

      The Compass Rose
      1. Socket
      2. Critical Hit Chance
      3. Critical Hit Damage
      4. Area Damage or Attack Speed
      So am I looking for a ring rolled with all these stats? Because most of the time it will roll with Dexterity. So wouldn't it be unlikely that I would find such a ring?
      If I had one with say Dex,CHD,socket and Attack speed    -     should I reroll Dex into CHC? Doesn't this defeat the purpose of Ancients? (as the ancient would have possible higher Dex but not higher CHC)
      What if CHD was really low and Dex was really high? What if overall damage goes down because I re-roll Dex?
      I'm confused. Just trying to figure out how to decide between 2 items.
      EG: I have 2 Convention of Elements
      Priorities are:
      1. Socket
      2. Critical Hit Chance
      3. Critical Hit Damage
      4. Area Damage or Attack Speed
      Ring A (Ancient):                Ring B (non-Ancient):
      +618 Dexterity                     +473 Dexterity
      CHD : + 46% (rolled)            + 49% (rolled)
      CHC: + 4.5%                           +5.0%
      Socket                                     Socket
      The game shows no difference in damage but minus in toughness and recovery on Ring B (must be secondary stats)

      Which Ring is better? (should I choose?)
      Thanks for any explanation of this. Especially @Deadset

      So the stat priority page of the guide ranks haste much higher than strength but the consumables guide recommends the feast for strength even though the haste food offers more haste which should make it the better choice surely?
      Hoping someone more aware of the theorycrafting to clear that up for me.

      This mainly applies for raiding by the way but if there is a different answer for M+ I am interested to know the answer there.

      Hello there!
      It is my vision on build Yrel for quick matches and non-high (diamond/ml/gml) league.
      Wanna show it, because I disagree with guide, what is presented here. Guide https://www.icy-veins.com/heroes/yrel-build-guide maybe good, but it designed not for casual players.
      Following this guide, you'll pretty good brusher-tank (Yrel have 2679 HP right now on level 1, only 8 characters in game have more HP), with super-mobility and good damage after 16 lvl. Our specialisation - defend objectives on map. Noone in this game now can't do it better, then Yrel.
      My prefer talent build is: 2, 2, 3, 2, 1, 3, 4.
      Another form: Dauntless, Gift of the Naaru, Divine Steed, Sacred Ground, Aldor Peacekeeper, Holy Wrath, Seraphim.
      Also, if you have a good tank, and all what you team need is damage, or if we on bad map to us (see below) : 1, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1/4.
      Another form: Light of Karabor, Hand of Freedom, Holy Avenger, Ardent Defender, Repentance, Holy Wrath, Word of Glory/Seraphim.
      Our playstyle: do a simple brusher work, before get level 4, or start ivent on map. After level 4, try be near our teammates, for get maximum profit from Gift of the Naaru, but without fanatism ?. After level 7, you can soak exp from 2 lines with Divine Steed, try get more exp to team (again, without fanatism, on largest maps like warhead juction it will be dumb). When your team get ultimates, start playing more aggresively.
      Mid game: defend targets, defend teams, kill everything what moving (and what doesn't moving - move it and kill! ?) with help some assassin in your team. Help to push and get camps. After level 16, when you pick Holy Wrath, you may get camp solo, and it will be fast (before 16 lvl, you also can do it, but it will too long - waste of time and mana).
      Late game: PUSH PUSH PUSH PUSH PUSH PUSH! You have all things to win. Just win teamfight (be prepared), get camps and go to core. Not in our plans play in deep late (but we can!), then just finish game.
      More about talents:
      In first tier (1 lvl), Dauntless give 50% kinetic armor for 2.5 sec - is too many to be skiped, any autoattack assassin will be hate you, but if opponents haven't autoattack assassin, pick Light of Karabor for synergy with 13'th level talent (Aldor Peacekeeper) and still have good sustain.  Maraad's Insight deal smallest profit in late game, and most games will be long, because we're in game ?.
      Second tier (4 lvl), Gift of the Naaru give to you free (!) healing to teammate on 7 sec cooldown (!!!), what can help to survive low-hp teammate, and he can escape, but if you trust in your healer, you can pick Hand of Freedom. Aegis of Light just doesn't work - we initiate fights, or follow opponent, or run away. No useful case to team.
      Third tier (7 lvl) - all talents can be used, but I prefer Divine Steed, because it is + mobility (fast soak exp on 2 lines, complete it and go to objective on map, for example), +1 option to escape, +1 option to following low-hp opponent to kill him (especially after 16lvl). If you not like it, or wanna deal more damage, you can pick Holy Avenger for combo like a D+E+Full-E. Righteous Momentum, truthly, can be picked only in full-party, when your team need more ground control. I don't see any other cases for it, but talent still can be picked.
      Ultimate (10 lvl) - always Sacred Ground, exeptly maps, where you absolutely doesn't need defend objective, or if you already have good tank with zoning option. 45 sec cd is so small, what sometimes it can be ready when your Sacred Ground still active. ?
      Ardent Defender we can pick, when we have a good tank, who know what he need to do. Usually, you get it before level 10. It's best save ability in game, also 120 sec cd is not so long, but we do less profit to team then what we can do with Sacred Ground.
      Fifth tier (13 lvl) - all talents are teoritly playable, but I prefer Aldor Peacekeeper, because it's good combo: instant Divine Purpose + Vindication, you got heal and kinetic shield, heal teammate, and you can tank 'cuz -25% damage for all sources near you, and under Sacred Ground you will be unbreakable, especially if you chosen Light of Karabor in tier 1. Repentance you can pick when Holy Avenger already picked in third tier - more control is more control. ? Also wanna clarify, what Velen's Chosen minorly upgrade damage, and have less profit then Aldor Peacekeeper and Repentance.
      Sixth tier (16 lvl) - always Holy Wrath, because it greatly increase our damage. From this moment, you will be a great threat to opponents, and they'll try to kill you, switching damage in you first, but they can't kill you ? (R+D+Q). Templar's Verdict, theoretically, can be use in well-played team to increase team damage and target kills, but for ultimate benefit of this talent, I repeat, we need at least 2 teammate with good fast switch in priority target for fast kill.
      Seventh tier (20 lvl) - depends of talent in fourth tier (Ultimate). If Ardent Defender picked - upgrade it (Word of Glory), exept if you have good aoe healer (like a morales/alextraza/brightwing/etc.). If Sacred Ground - pick Seraphim. Active ability,  every 10 seconds (!) deal 2 sec unstoppable - it's always full charged basic ability, what cannot be interrupted for blinding/stun/sleep/etc., also it's another option to escape.
      Upgrading Sacred Ground with Hallowed Ground - useless, because if you used it - stay here to death, but give time to escape to your teammates, in other cases you win teamfight ever, becuase on level 20 and higher, most teamfights end with death 3-5 ppl in team.
      Bubble Hearth - garbadge, if you wanna win. Ultimate escape, but if you find yourself in a situation, where you want to press this ability, your team will lose teamfight, and then - that game.
      Leaving your team in the minority is not the way of true light protectors!
      Our stronger maps: Braxis Holdout, Cursed Hollow, Infernal Shrines, Sky Temple, Warhead Junction, Volskaya Foundry.
      Our weaker maps: Tomb of the Spider Queen, Battlefield of Eternity, Blackheart's Bay (?).
      Our nightmare: Johanna, Garrosh, Malthael, Rexxar.
      Tips:
      Avoid downtime Divine Purpose! If you're not in fight, heal yourself instantly with Divine Purpose + Vindication, it cost no mana, and also you help to your healer (especially with Gift of the Naaru). If you pick Holy Avenger, start full-prepared Avenging Wrath without Divine Purpose, for combining it after first use. You start fight, and keep your damage strong full time in duel. It is good idea to use full-prepared Avenging Wrath in backline opponent team to help your assassins kill prefer target with Divine Purpose + Righteous Hammer, or separate and destract them healer. When you use Avenging Wrath just deal damage, don't wait full charge - it spell have a fixed damage, and charging in this situation is waste of time and damage from autoattack. Will be glad to any responce!
      Thanks for reading!
      See you in Nexus!

      Hey IV, I made a simple stats calculator stats calculator for wow classic in javascript.
      You select a class, then enter values into the fields for Stamina, Strength, Agility, Intellect and Spirit. As you type it updates the results which show you useful information based on what stats you entered - like dodge, and crit percentages, class-specific statistics like Ranged AP for Hunters and block for Druids in bear form etc.
      Hopefully people find this useful for comparing item benefits and racial starting stats, or for learning how base stats affect different classes in Classic. Did you know for example that Shamans can build Block with Str items?
      I didn’t just post here to show this off - I need some help with calculating Spirit. Some users have commented that Spirit health/mana regen values are too high for various classes (for example Paladins) and was wondering if anyone here had some more information on this!
      Your boy teeb
