Becoming a Legion Archaeologist: Can You Dig It?

Recommended Posts

ZHi5IT5.jpg

Blizzard did a littled recap/hype video for archaeology, but I notice it doesn't mention the sheer horror of certain Azsuna dig sites. But hey there's a mount, pet AND an extra dungeon boss so it's all worth it!

Blizzard LogoLegion Archaeology

When the Burning Legion invaded Azeroth, the Broken Isles became both the front lines of a war—and a great opportunity to dig a bit deeper into some of Azeroth's rich history.

If you haven’t caught up on what’s new for Archaeologists in Legion, now is the perfect time to start digging in to this secondary profession.

Excavating the Broken Isles

Before your start exploring the Broken Isles, there are a several key differences Archaeologists will want to note:

  • There are three active digsites available at any given time. Each consists of nine areas of discovery within the digsite.
  • Digsites in the Broken Isles tend to be somewhat smaller than elsewhere in Azeroth, requiring less travel.
  • You’ll find fewer artifacts of common quality, potentially leading to more Pristine finds.

Get started by visiting Dariness the Learned in the Archaeology building in Dalaran, and then keep an eye out for your Excavator’s Notebook when you’re working in dig sites, as that item unlocks your path from Archaeology skill level 700 to 800.

Dariness is very learned, indeed.

World Questing With Shovels

Once you’ve reached player-character level 110, visit Dariness the Learned to learn about her current Archaeology quest. She offers a rare find for you every two weeks, and this is currently the only way to obtain rare finds in the Broken Isles. It won’t be easy, but all you need do is channel your inner Harrison Jones. The path to discovery is fraught with danger!

Dariness’s quests can require you to commit some time to the profession, as you to travel the isles and set your pick to digging. Each quest is related to a specific type of site, such as Demonic in Stormheim, Highborne in Azsuna, or the Highmountain Tauren in Highmountain, and they each result in rewarding a unique rare item. These rewards include:

Now that’s a spirited mount!

Feel the Earth Move Under Your Feet

A new feature in Legion is the Standing On It buff—an Archaeology improvement that tells you when you’re standing close enough to a find to use Survey and dig it up. Now, when you’re within range of your prize, you can explore with your feet, and you don’t need to guess where to dig. Most importantly—Standing On It applies to all dig sites in Azeroth, Draenor, and Outland!

Time Is on Your Side

With the weekly reset every other week, you can get started on the current Archaeology quest, and you have up to 14 days to complete it. There are currently 13 such quests in rotation, and completing them means earning achievements. The No Stone Unturned achievement, earned when you complete 250 Legion digsites, rewards you with the title “The Groundbreaker”, and when you obtain eight of the 13 rares from Archaeology quests, you’ll receive the This Side Up achievement and unlock a special Artifact weapon tint.

Tip: Get yourself a good pair of gloves to wear while you’re out surveying, and enchant them with Enchant Gloves – Legion Surveying. This permanently gives you a boost to your surveying speed, cutting the time you spend digging in half!

Now that you know more, it’s time to pack up your gear and get your hands dirty. Good luck out there!

I personally always loved archaeology prof its the only one i ever truly do. It's mostly for down time in ques but its somewhat relaxing to do (when not getting mauled by an alligator or something when trying to find the next spot). The standing on it buff is really really helpful, what they didn't note is you get a little light-bulb exclamation point above your head metal gear style when you are there. Once you get a green signal you can more or less follow it until the buff and have to survey one time fewer, may not seem like much but when doing it for hours each saved second counts. It was a really simple addition that was just a huge quality of life improvement :)

no sparkle ghost moose yet but i do have all the toys, pets, and weapon mogs :)

Just like all other professions in Legion, Archaeology is also grindy, long and tedious. I didn't like the uninvolved profession system WoD have, but taking it from one extreme to the other isn't exactly smart. They need to find a middle ground.

For Archaeology, specifically, limiting the digsites in a single area feels a bit meh. From the weekly quests that have shown up so far, the Azsuna one with the 20 projects was pretty ridiculous; I hope Val'sharah and Suramar aren't like that. The fact that you need more pieces to complete the projects is also very annoying, just makes the profession an even bigger grindfest than it already was.

Agreed.  WoD you needed nothing really to progress, but now every second or third profession quest you're locked until you complete a dungeon/spend thousands on the mats.

There was even a few patterns that weren't available until a raid unlocked weeks into the expansion.  and it was a level 815 pattern.  Helm I believe.  Although I guess they can be upgraded for more thousands.

I prefer it how it is in Legion, for sure, but I don't think artificial barriers are the way to go. It's evident Blizzard are trying to force us to slow down a bit (artifact questlines with long missions etc.), but it can definitely get old fast.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

How to Get the Spirit of Eche'ro Mount
      1. Download MapCoords or some other add-os that displays coordinates in the game.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
