Please someone tell me what I'm doing wrong - Shadow DPS

I know shadow is actually in a pretty decent place right now, overall, for damage.  I've read the guides and checked my gear, but I'm still almost always trailing at the bottom of our dps charts and would really love some input from anyone whom can see what I'm doing wrong.  My guild is about to start progressing into Mythic difficulty, but with my constantly pulling less than 200k dps, they'll have to bench me if I don't step it up.

I like to think I follow the spell priorities pretty well, but if not, I clearly need a slap in the face with some constructive criticism.

Hi Snuggz,

I think, I may have found some of your problems.

One of the most crucial things is, that you havent skilled mass hysteria in your artifact yet. Its one overpowered skill that is a must have.

If I were you I would consider to reskill the artifakt th get that perk.

Mass hysteria will  become stronger, if you use the surrender to madness talent, which you should also play with.

It requires some Training, but will be really rewarding.

Here´s the sim with the same gear but I´ve changed the last tier skill to surrender to madness and added the mass hysteria perk.

And last but not least, heres the last sim with more haste (27%) and less mastery (35%)

Which will give you a simulated plus of 110k dps compared to your actual skill and gear.

Huge red flag is you do not have Mass Hysteria. This should have been one of the first golden traits you went for. Another one is that you are either dying way too soon in your StM (usually in the 60 stack range) or you are waiting way to late in the fight to use it. Work on your StM rotation with target dummy.

As Drkdragonn told you need to get Mass Hysteria ASAP.

One other thing you can do to get more time in Voidform when Surrender to Madness is up is switch from Mindbender to Power Infusion and use it when you start to feel you are about to die (Horribly ^TM). This will give you more time.

Still for when you are with Surrender to Madness up. You should be using Void Torrent twice and when you dominate the rotation with high stacks you could use it three times.

And talking about high stacks of Voidform, I myself don't know exactly when, but at some point our priority change and you will find if you cast Mind Blast you will die (Horribly ^TM). This part is the part that I'm still trying to figuring out and is the key to even higher stacks.

Thank you all so much for the advice.  I normally do have StM, I switched out for some Mythic+ dungeons I  was running where StM just ends up taking time for rezzing.

I didn't know the path to follow originally when investing points, so didn't know that Mass Hysteria was as crucial as it is.

I'd been wondering if it didn't reach a certain point where Mind Blast's cast time takes just too long and causes me to die (Horribly, of course) when I could have used a different filler of some sort.

 

I very much appreciate all of your help, and I will make the suggested changes and see how it goes.

At what time/percentage should I start looking to Surrender to the Madness?  Most fights I wait till right about 35% when SW:Death kicks in.  Should I be hitting it sooner?

this is a very well made guide. As for stm you should hit sooner ( very depending on kill timer and your haste ). If your haste around 11.500 = 12.000 you are good to go to stack crit afterwards.

Hey there, 

the thing is that if you are running Stm build, then you should be maxing haste as is mentioned in guide. Your mastery is too high for what you actually need, that´s why balancing mastery with Haste and Crit is much better for your overall dps.

Also, in my raid gear i got about 35 % haste, even if you have like 835 + items that proced with good portion of haste and socket slot, it´s better to gear up than having some 850+ with versatility and some random stat.

A lot of my gear was upgrades from REALLY bad heroic gear, so at the time was just looking at ilvl and Int. 

I'll start maxing my focus on haste and worry less about ilvl moving forward.

Yeah that is the problem with this expansion. ilvl really does not mean nearly as much as it used to. It is almost all about the secondary stats.
