Haven't Played Since Crusade. Best Class/Toon?

Same as title. 

Havent played in years. I know a TON has changed. Any tips or classes/toons that are best to play? I typically like Mage characters in games, but just wondering what's the top stuff right now. Please no typical answers like, "there is no best, just pick a character and have fun."

There's no general best character to play. If you want a answer you should be more specific what you want to do/play. Are you looking for a DD, Tank or Healer? Do you want to run raids, mythic+ or only do PVP/Arena? The choice of the currently best character (blizzard does a lot of balancing in this addon, a class who is top notch can be in the middle the next patch) depends a lot on what you want to do. 

Even if you don’t want to here it: take a look at the rankings for the stuff you want to do und play the class in the class trials.  The best class for your content won’t do any good if you’re not comfortable with the play style of the class
