Diablo 20th Anniversary Video Retrospective

Recommended Posts

Cfgk1OU.jpg

Blizzard staff talk about the franchise, how it started Battle.net, what the chat gem really does, and much more.

Today is Diablo 1's 20th anniversary and to add to the various events that will be going on throughout all Blizzard franchises during January, we also got a video retrospective of the franchise! Everyone at Blizzard who contributed to the series in one way or another took some time to talk about their experiences and the history of the ultimate ARPG and we get to find out a lot of things you may or may not have known, such as the original game was initially planned as a turn-based claymation RPG at a time where that genre was considered dead, what the mystery of the chat gem really is, how Diablo created Battle.net and much more.

So, what are some of your favorite moments in the Diablo world? The first tie you met the Butcher, the first unique piece of loot that dropped (hello Arkaine's Valor!), or just slyaing that big red dude at the end?

This game made me scared as fuck when I was a kid (roughly 12). The first Diablo game was intense because you felt there was something lurking on every corner; the soundtrack and sound effects captured this feeling perfectly. And the retro graphics made this game even more scary because everything feels so rustic yet impactful. Games like Diablo and Flashback had this weird vibe that made you feel very uncomfortable while playing. It was a combination of pixelated gore, choppy yet somehow fluid animations and a low-qualitu midi-esque music that gave the 90's games that morbid energy the current generation of will never be able to capture with their fancy graphics and orchestral music.

As with most people, the most memorable moment of Diablo 1 was meeting The Butcher. Opening that tiny wooden door and hearing that demonic voice saying "Ah... Fresh meat!" followed by seeing a bloody room filled with impaled corpses still sends chills down my spine. I knew shit was going to be tough the moment I spoke with the Dying Townperson that gives you The Butcher quest. The Butcher marks the "Optional Super Boss" moment of video games. In old games (specially in the arcade era) you'd often find yourself in a disadvantage in boss fights because they were supposed to be cheap so the game would last longer (a smartass and despicable strategy) and you couldn't skip them. But since The Butcher fight was optional, and the fact that in Diablo you could grow stronger and obtain better gear, it was satisfying for those who couldn't handle The Butcher the very first time to grind a bit in later levels and return to kick his ass.

Music was the big one for me. Even now, I think music can have so much more of an impact than any kind of visual effect. There's nothing like it!

I was an adult - by age, roughly speaking, since I've never been much of an adult in most other ways (I Write and Draw Comic Books, so being a Kid is kind-of a Prerequisite)... and I remember my Wife and I playing D1 and when we would go after the Big D, both of us would actually get nervous as we died a lot.  I don't do that in D3 at all.  I wonder why?

Agreed.  Music is very important in setting atmosphere.  Diablo did a great job of having creepy music with the cries of the damned and other various horrifying sound effects.   The story setting and over all feeling made me as a kid not want to play when I was alone or at night.

I assume you're being sarcastic regarding D3, haha. But yeah, one of the big problems with D3 (and even D2, in a way) is the lack of atmosphere of dread and fear that D1 made us all feel. He IS the Lord of Fear, after all, and that is what D1 was all about: fear and uncertainty (since even quests were random). I pray that the next game in the franchise manages to re-capture everything that made Diablo scary, even if it means downgrading the graphics to bring back that nostalgic vibe of the 90's.

It also ties in so perfectly with that idea of "things that go bump in the night". That amazing feeling of not knowing where the sound is coming from is just awesome. Left4Dead did this perfectly whenever you could hear a witch crying somewhere.

I feel like Diablo 3 focused too much on the heroes, if that makes sense. If you listen to the music of the ROS cinematic, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb7QJwQ58T0), it's too "epic". The focus is so heavily placed on Tyrael saving the few, rather than Malthael killing many. This was a big swap I think.

Indeed you are right. D3's entire narrative is the classic "Chosen One" bullshit with "Nephalem dis, Nephalem dat". It is so obvious but I never really realized it.

Not sure what you mean... but I have a tendency to be a bit dense sometimes.

I dig the raccoon Avatar.  I worked on the Rocket Raccoon Miniseries Comic way back in the Jurassic.

I mean that D3 doesn't give you the same feelings as D1.

Thanks for the compliment! Rocket is probably my favorite Marvel character, even before the Guardians movie. Which miniseries you worked on?

The very first.  With Big Bill Mantlo and Molten Mike Mignola.  (Sorry... slipped into my Stan Impersonation there).

I got a question for you folks:  I read through the "Diablo Anniversary Event Complete Guide," and maybe I missed it, but I still have some questions:

https://www.icy-veins.com/d3/diablo-anniversary-event-complete-guide

Does all the little nooks and crannies of this Event need to be done in a specific Order to get all the Pets and Goodies?

And, does it all need to be done all in one fell swoop?  Can a person do it over the course of a couple of Sittings or Days?

(Sorry... I'm a little ADHD and Specifics need to be, um, specific for me to get a good glean of stuff).

Thanx!

You can do each part in separate settings as long as you restart the instance. You can't stop half-way through one and continue it another time.

I came here to get something like this question answered. Let me be more verbose.

I made a new character, and took the qeust to go to the old ruins. When I couldn't find the portal, I realized I was in campaign mode. *sigh* I deleted that character, made a new one, made sure I was in adventure mode, and went right to the portal.

a) should I have tried to farm the cultists first? That would have put me up levels when I started the labyrinth...

I fell asleep around the Unholy Altar, or so, (not quite faceplant on the keyboard...) and, of course, was disconnected when I woke up. I hadn't found your guide yet, and now I'm kicking myself that I was ALMOST DONE *sigh*. I obviously had a new game when I restarted, and went back to the labyrinth (with a short detour for Wirt's Leg) and am now level 28 on Labyrinth level 9.

b) Will this still count for the 'eerie red glow' achievement?

Any other potential 'gotchas' that I need to be aware of?

Thanks!

Thank you!

I looked there for any reference to the next achievement, "I Sense a Soul in Search of Answers", but found nothing when searching for that string. I'm assuming it needs to be done on adventure mode also? I'll be trying it, but hoping for a reply so I don't waste too much time. :D

I have one clarification that someone who is regularly on that site might wish to include: I did disconnect from the game, and went back in (the next day) with the same character. I did get the achievement for finishing it. At this point, all I have left are the two portrait frames. In 1 full, and 1 partial run, I got 13 unique monsters.

ETA: I just had page 6 of the cultists notes drop in the Fields of Misery; page 4 in the Caverns of Araneae; which is not listed in your guide.

A brand new season arrives in Diablo 3 next month! Blizzard have the full preview ready so let's take a look at the cosmetic rewards, season journey, Haedrig's Gift sets, and more!
      Season 33 (Source)
Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 33: Shades of the Nephalem. Starting on October 25 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST, Nephalem can harness the power of the Shades of the Nephalem theme, which first debuted with Season 22. For an in-depth look at what’s coming, take a gander below. Also, Season 32 will officially come to an end on October 20. Seasonal Journey
      Season Theme
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
      Season Journey Rewards
      Seasonal Conquest
      Haedrig’s Gift
      Patch 2.7.8
      Season Theme
The shadows, they are moving, and they seem… animated. Like they have a will of their own. Whatever this trickery is, perhaps you can use it to your advantage. Let’s see what the demons say when you fight side by side with your own shadow! Shadows of the Past: Activating a Shrine/Pylon will spawn in a shadow clone of your class, who will come with a randomly chosen 1 of 3 predetermined builds. This clone's power will scale with your character and will last for 1 minute (unless your character dies). See this article for the shadow clone variations that can spawn when activating. Kanai’s Cube: Kanai’s Cube will have a fourth slot this season. This fourth slot will have the choices of the first 3 slots but will not stack with any of them, providing additional flexibility to your build. Return to Top Season Cosmetic Rewards
Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to any who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 33, this means awards originally available from Season 9 are returning to the Season Journey. However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve already participated in previous Seasons. We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Prove your worth in the Trial of Tempests to earn the Stupendous Contraption pet and the Industrial Portrait Frame.
In addition to the Chest and Gloves slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn the Pandemonium portraits, and the cute and craggily Rocky pet first introduced in Season 9. Return to Top Season Journey Rewards
If you’ve been diligently slaying demons before and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of five: Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a Level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within five minutes. Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55. All I Do is Win: Complete 2 Conquests this Season. Life Goes On: Kill Maghda at Level 70 in under fifteen seconds on Torment XIII difficulty. Money Ain’t a Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty. Treasure Goblins outside of Nephalem Rifts will sometimes open portals to Greed’s domain, The Vault. Take U There: Reach Greater Rift Level 60 Solo. Greater Rift keystones can be obtained from any Nephalem Rift guardian. Power Amplification: Use Kanai’s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a Level 50+ gem. Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanai’s Cube to reforge a Legendary item. Return to Top Seasonal Conquest
Want to prepare your Conquest plan for Season 33? Here are the challenges you’ll face: For Curses!/Stars Align, pick any Cursed Chest event that requires killing monsters and defeat over 350 or more at level 70 on Torment X or higher. Also returning for Season 33 is Sprinter/Speed Racer, where you’re challenged to complete the entire Diablo III campaign from Act I to Act V at Level 70 in under an hour! Next is Avarice/Avaritia, where all that glitters is gold—that is, if you can complete a 50 million Gold streak outside of The Vault or its Inner Sanctum. We're also bringing Thrill/Superhuman, which requires completion of a Greater Rift Level 45—solo and without any Set items equipped. And lastly we'll be bringing back Speed Demon/Need for Speed, meaning you'll need to beat a Torment X Nephalem Rift at Level 70 in 2 minutes. Best of luck! Return to Top Haedrig’s Gift
Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works: Completing Acts II, III, and IV of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts. Each Gift contains a few pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set in this manner per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose wisely! The set you receive depends on the class of the character you’re playing when you open each Haedrig’s Gift. To collect a full Class Set, you’ll need to open all three on the same character. Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 33: Barbarian - Might of the Earth Crusader - Thorns of the Invoker Demon Hunter - The Shadow's Mantle Monk - Monkey King's Garb Witch Doctor - Raiment of the Jade Harvester Wizard - Firebird's Finery Necromancer - Grace of Inarius Return to Top Patch 2.7.8
Our next patch goes live on October 22 and introduces quality-of-life updates for demon slayers on Mac. New Mac Executables/Mac Native Silicon and Intel: These updates will allow Diablo III to run on new versions of the macOS. PC Experience Stability: This PTR is open to both Mac and PC players. While the focal point of the 2.7.8 PTR is to test technical updates for Mac, we want PC users to monitor their playing experience as well. If you experience any stability issues or difficulties in connecting with Mac players, please give us that feedback. Return to Top

The Season of Ethereal Memory will start later today at 5 p.m. PDT (NA Servers), 5 p.m. CEST (EU Servers), and 5 p.m. KST (Asian Servers). The theme of Season 32 was first introduced with Season 24 and is now back for another round!

The theme of the season reintroduces the Ethereals, which are rare and powerful items known from Diablo II and reimagined for Diablo III. Season 32 in Diablo 3 starts on July 12 and here is the official preview with more details.
      (Source)
Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 32: Ethereal Memory. Starting on July 12 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST, Nephalem can harness the power of the Ethereal Memory theme, which first debuted with Season 24. For an in-depth look at what’s coming, take a gander below.

      Seasonal Journey
      Season Theme
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
      Season Journey Rewards
      Seasonal Conquest
      Haedrig’s Gift
      Season Theme
As the Nephalem reflect on Sanctuary's history, instruments of power from a bygone era resurface. These ethereal memories will grant those persistent enough to search for them unimaginable power. Legends of the past will manifest once more in the present, and you must decide how to best use these gifts—for ethereal power is fugacious by nature, and will soon return to being no more than a myth.
For this seasonal theme, we were inspired to reimagine how Ethereal items could manifest in Diablo III, with 21 iconic weapons making a return from Diablo II. In Season 32, Ethereals are rare, powerful, and fleeting items.
Season 32 reintroduces Ethereals, a weapon-type that players will be able to acquire and hunt for in their upcoming seasonal journey. Ethereals will roll a powerful set of affixes, a random Class Weapon Legendary Power and a random Class Passive Power. Ethereals will have unique icons, names, item types, and sounds originally found in Diablo II. For additional details on Ethereals, check out the list below:
Ethereals are account bound and can only be dropped by monsters, chests, and destructibles, but do not require your character to be Level 70 in order to drop. Ethereals cannot be acquired through Kanai's Cube or from Kadala. Ethereal rarity drop rate is set between Ancient and Primal items. There are 3 unique Ethereals per class. Each Ethereal has fixed affixes and rolls one random Legendary Weapon power and one random Class Passive Skill. Only one Ethereal can be equipped at a time. Ethereals ignore item durability loss. Legendary Powers and Class Passive Skills rolled on Ethereals do not stack with the same power equipped through Kanai's Cube, Items or Skills. Ethereals cannot be Enchanted, Transmogrified, Dyed, Reforged, or traded. Ethereals can be augmented. Collecting all 21 Ethereals during the season will reward players with the Feat of Strength, Ethereal Recollection. Players who accomplish this will have all Ethereal transmogrify options available for future seasonal and non-seasonal play. Ethereals only drop in Seasonal play and will not transfer to your non-seasonal character when the season ends. Return to Top
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to players who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 32, this means awards originally available from Season 8 are returning to the Season Journey.

We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Feast your eyes upon the Teganze Warrior Portrait Frame and Bat pet!

In addition to the Boots and Pants slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn a series of portrait frames that smolder with demonic fires of the Burning Hells. The iconic wings of Andariel will also be available once more, allowing you to truly embrace your inner Maiden of Anguish.
      Season Journey Rewards
If you’ve been diligently slaying demons for the past few Seasons and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of 5:
Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within 5 minutes. Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55. All I Do is Win: Complete 2 Conquests this Season. Warm Thoughts: Kill Izual at Level 70 in under 15 seconds on Torment XIII difficulty. Return to Top
      Seasonal Conquest
Want to prepare your Conquest plan for Season 32? Here are the challenges you’ll face!
For Curses!/Stars Align, pick any Cursed Chest event that requires killing monsters and defeat over 350 or more at Level 70 on Torment X or higher. Push your way to Greater Rift Level 75 to complete Divinity/Lionhearted. For the fiercest demon slayers, Boss Mode/Worlds Apart is a speed challenge where you’ll need to eliminate the following bosses at Level 70 and Torment X in under twenty minutes:
The Skeleton King The Butcher Zoltun Kulle Ghom Cydaea Rakanoth Diablo Adria Queen Araneae Maghda Belial Siegebreaker Assault Beast Azmodan Izual Urzael Malthael Finally, Years of War/Dynasty will be a great test for those who enjoy mastering various Class Sets, and if that’s not enough, Masters of the Universe/Masters of Sets will challenge your tactical understanding of Set Dungeons.

Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey (courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift) have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works:
Completing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts.
Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 32:
Barbarian – Immortal King’s Call Crusader – Seeker of the Light Demon Hunter – Natalya’s Vengeance Monk – Uliana’s Stratagem Necromancer – Trag’Oul’s Avatar Witch Doctor – Spirit of Arachyr Wizard – Vyr’s Amazing Arcana
