When to use synapse springs

Been reading some guides but I haven't seen any information on when to use this with frost and/or fire?

As frost, on cooldown.

 

As fire, either on cooldown (but everytime during alter time) or when you are going to combust.

I personally use it before combustions to build higher ignite.

But for fire do you delay using combustion since the cd doesn't align or do you just use it with combustion when it is up?

I personally delay using it intentionally so it will always line up for combustions. Meaning that I don't use the Synapse spring on CD. 

 

I am not sure tho if this is optimal so I would like to hear other opinions as well.

Unless for a specific phase of a fight, I go on cooldown so as not to miss a usage and to make sure it's up for every AT.  Very important to use it with your big AT combust (on live).
