Battle.net Name at Destiny Event: An Exception

Recommended Posts

K3ZmSYD.jpg

A Blizzard rep says the mentions at the Destiny 2 event were a one time thing and it's still called Blizzard Launcher.

There was a lot of speculation after the Destiny 2 gameplay reveal event where Mike Morhaime showed up at the end to announce the game would be coming to PC exclusively, since he said it was coming to "Battle.net" specifically. Just in case people thought he might have misspoken, the same was repeated many times in the accompanying press release, which was strange since Blizzard retired the Battle.net name and re-branded it to Blizzard App in March.

The speculation was mostly about whether Blizzard had changed their minds, or whether Battle.net was indeed still the name of the general framework and it was only the launcher that was renamed or something else entirely. In any case and, pretty ironically, it all sounded very confusing which was exactly what Blizzard was trying to avoid by renaming it in the first place, as you can read in their original announcement from last year.

Well, as it turns out the Destiny 2 event was a one time thing, as a Blizzard representative confirmed to Polygon:

Quote

“It's still Blizzard Launcher. We made an exception for this announcement.”

Well, that at least clears things up, right? It seems the Battle.net name was too recognizable not to use for the Destiny 2 PC announcement, but they're sticking with the change after that.

Well, there's still plenty of confusion to go around, as the actual launcher is called the "Blizzard App" in your taskbar, so no one really knows what the hell they're doing right? So once again, goodbye, actually cool name full of tradition and history and "welcome" Blizzard App/Launcher, generic sounding branded entity.

I don't think there has to be any confusion about that. Battle.net is the name of the platform Blizzard is using for online services for their games (login, authentication, communication between games etc.) and which Destiny 2 will use for those specific features. The name of the desktop app we all have has little to do with it as it is a suite for easier access to the games. We still connect to Battle.net. The main reason they are doing that, in my opinion, is to save developers the time they would spend building those features from scratch, since Activision and Blizzard "belong to each other", Bungie could use Blizzard's assets. And that's my opinion on that. Not sure if i am missing something here.

Then why wouldn't they say that and not "it was an exception"? It's confusing as hell since I'm not even sure what is called what anymore. The way I understand it battle.net is now ONLY the community site and nothing else. Then there's Blizzard App, Blizzard Launcher (which should be the same thing) and possibly Blizzard Tech.

And you're absolutely right about Bungie and Blizz, although the real reason is so they wouldn't have to go to Steam and give Valve part of the profit, since other Activision titles are on there normally. Destiny is just a perfect fit for battle...uhm, Blizzard Thing Launcher App.

One other thing to note is this was just "a Blizzard representative", so it absolutely wouldn't surprise me if we got an official statement on the matter on Monday that either clarifies or completely changes that comment.

My understanding is that Destiny 2 will use Blizzard's infrastructure and framework for online gaming services (which is Battle.net), just like WoW, Overwatch and the other games do and the game will be accessed via Blizzard's desktop application/Blizzard Launcher currently named Blizzard App just like the other games.

Since you just repeated what you said earlier I will repeat my question as well. Why did they call it "an exception" then, if it's actually accurate? I mean look what you're saying makes perfect sense to me, but Blizzard is pretty much directly contradicting it. All of that is actually true, it's just a question of what they call what aspect. If the framework is battle.net and they will keep calling it battle.net why mention the exception and why not then ALSO mention the actual launcher app? If the goal was to remove confusion since new people don't know what battle net is why keep using it as the term for the infrastructure, especially if they never ever specified that it's staying as the term for that.

As I said everything you say makes sense and I'd imagine that's how it works internally at Blizz but their communication to their community about what is what has been terrible.

I will try to use an example. Consider the case of League of Legends. The game uses a Launcher called League of Legends and also uses a platform for some online features like adding friends, accessing the store, joining chat rooms, matchmaking etc... That platform is called Pvp.net and it is actually Riot's version of Battle.net. You will probably not see a single mention of the term "Pvp.net" throughout the whole League of Legends client or launcher because it is something not important for the player. It's just a service that runs "underground" and simply enables the game as a whole. Now, if Dota 2 wanted to use Riot's assets for logins etc i believe the person presenting it would say something like "You will now be logging in through Pvp.net in order to play Dota 2.", which will be correct in that case but it will definetely confuse players that haven't even heard of it.

I believe it's only a matter of word usage. Morhaime didn't say anything wrong. Battle.net didn't simply vanish. What did the guy who asked him what he meant expect as an answer? A whole explanation of how their systems' function or to apologize for the mistake when it isn't one in the first place? So they just gave that answer about making an exception.

I can be wrong though.

Well yea, an explanation like the one you just posted, which totally makes sense, is what would be expected. If they specifically made the change so they can differentiate the launcher from the network as you said then they'd want to have the difference as clear as possible. This was a specific question about the difference between battle.net and the Blizzard launcher, it was the perfect opportunity to explain Blizzard's intentions with the nomenclature.

Ofc as you say it's totally possible that it was just some random PR dude that answered who didn't actually know how it all works and he gave a shitty quick answer about an exception. The way I see it it's simply a matter of them still thinking the battle.net name has some cache/"power" and so they used it this one time still before everyone forgets it and gets on board with the new Blizzard App/Launcher.

I think that "Battle.net" was way overused and sometimes in places that didn't even make sense. You could often even forget Blizzard is making those games. In the old launcher, i don't remember seeing the name "Blizzard" mentioned anywhere in the client, and even in games you would only see it as a logo on the login screen and in the copyrights. I think the new name for the launcher is more proper as it has a more direct meaning (Blizzard App: yes its a platform for Blizzard games) but i will miss Battle.net as it sounds way cooler.

@Raynes

I suppose the same could be said for Steam, UPlay, Origin etc. But to be fair; if you don't realize you've bought a triple-A game made by developer X, I don't think it is the devs that are in error...

Figured they misspoke, but seeing as it's in the press release stuff, aswell.

It seems kind of stupid making "an exception" if they're trying to rename, though.

I don't know why people get confused. Blizzard did not abolish "Battle.net" as many think. They just renamed the App. Battle.net is still the online platform and connection of their games.

Just visit any official Game website from Blizzard and you will see battle.net in the URL

It's coming, exclusively, to the Blizzard App. The underlying system, Battle.net, in this case, doesn't really matter to the common user, and since they changed the name of the app to Blizzard app/launcher-thing, is what makes it confusing. Especially considering that the name change happened to prevent said confusion in the first place.

In this case the confusion stems from the idea that they changed the name, yet they themselves, didn't adhere to the name change. It's not about people not really "getting" what they mean.

Blizzard said they're going to remove Battle.net entirely; they simply mentioned it's going to be a long and slow process to transfer everything away from it. Back when they made the announcement, it took them months still to change the launcher from Battle.net to Blizzard App.

It's the same with URLs like https://eu.battle.net/wow that's now redirecting to https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-gb/. it's just a long and slow process. Eventually the name Battle.net will seize to exist. At least, that were their words back when they made their first announcement.

The fact that they changed the name of the platform is no big deal. I think what the big deal is the company is moving in a direction post-2010/2011 merger with Activision that fits their boards needs. The sad part is that in the process of doing that...they slowly kill off the nostalgia that most of us 90's-Present fans have had with Blizzard and Battle.net. It's sad but its modernization in the new gaming world. Imagine in 10 years from now...new gamers to Blizzard will only know Blizzard App and never know that Battle.net ever existed....just dust in the wind....

A global maintenance is scheduled for later today and all Blizzard services will be unavailable from 22:00-23:00 CEST.

      (Source)
As many players noticed, there’s an extra maintenance time scheduled for 22:00-23:00 CEST tonight, 6 October.
This maintenance is for a global infrastructure upgrade, so we need to carry it out at the same time for all of our services around the world. We chose this time for having the least global impact, but recognize that it is not ideal for European players, especially those in Western time zones.
We’re hopeful that the actual maintenance will be completed in a matter of 15-30 minutes, and while players will likely be unable to log-in during this maintenance, we won’t need to shut down realms. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee the stability of the game service during this timeframe.
      Thank you.
