Malthael Talents, In-development Video

We have all of Malthael's talents and an in-development video featuring new skins, sprays and more.

It seems Destructoid got a hold of all of Malthael's talents, then removed them from the article, and then put them back, with the usual intrepid redditors keeping them live in the meantime. Before we get to that, though, there's also the official in-development video, featuring Malthael's new stuff, plus skins, mounts, sprays for various heroes and more!

It’s almost time for some new additions to the Nexus, including our upcoming Hero, Malthael! Check out the video below to catch a glimpse of the Aspect of Death and his Skins, along with many other awesome items coming to Heroes of the Storm in the near future:



While not every item in the video is coming to the game with our very next patch, we’ll be sure to share more details with you before they do. Let us know what you think of the new items in the comments below, and, as always, we'll see you in the Nexus!

And now the main event, all of Malthael's talents. Obviously these are the early versions, so take them with a grain of salt (no, not THAT kind of salt):

Level 1

[W] Death's Reach

  • Increase Wraith Strike's range by 35%.

[Z] On a Pale Horse

  • Gain an additional 20% Movement Speed while mounted.

[Active] Fear the Reaper

  • Activate to increase Movement Speed by 25% and pass through other units for 4 seconds.

Level 4

[Q] Die Alone

  • Soul Rip deals 75% more damage if it hits only one Hero.

[E] Throwing Shade

  • Quest: Hit 20 Heroes with Death Shroud. Reward: Permanently increase Death Shroud's range by 33%, and reduce its cooldown by 2 seconds.

[Trait] Black Harvest

  • Quest: Apply Reaper's Mark to Heroes for a total of 150 seconds. Reward: Permanently increase Reaper's Mark's duration by 2 seconds.

Level 7

[Q] Cold Hand

  • Soul Rip Slows enemies by 20% for 2.5 seconds.

[W] Mortality

  • When damaging a Hero, Wraith Strike deals bonus damage equal to 4% of the Hero's maximum Health.

[Active] Touch of Death

  • Activate to reduce healing received by Heroes afflicted by Reaper's Mark by 50% for 4 seconds.

Level 10

[R1] Tormented Souls

  • Gain 20 Armor and unleash a torrent of souls, continually applying Reaper's Mark to nearby enemies for 4 seconds.

[R2] Last Rites

  • Apply a death sentence to an enemy Hero that, after 2 seconds, deals damage equal to 50% of their missing Health.
  • Repeatable Quest: Enemies killed while under the effect of Last Rites permanently reduce its cooldown by 5 seconds, to a minimum of 15 seconds.

Level 13

[Q] Soul Siphon

  • Increase Soul Rip's bonus healing from Heroes to 4% of the Hero's maximum Health.

[Trait] Ethereal Existence

  • Gain 15 Physical Armor per enemy Hero afflicted by Reaper's Mark, up to a maximum of 45.

[Active] Inevitable End

  • Activate to become Unstoppable for 2 seconds, but remove all active Reaper's Marks.

[Active] Shroud of Wisdom

  • After 2 seconds, gain 50 Spell Armor for 4 seconds.

Level 16

[Q] Soul Collector

  • Reduce Soul Rip's cooldown by 0.5 seconds and increase its range by 50%.

[W] Massacre

  • Wraith Strike now damages and applies Reaper's Mark to enemies around its target.

[Trait] Memento Mori

  • Reaper's Mark deals 100% increased damage after afflicting an enemy for more than 4 seconds.

Level 20

[R1] Reaper of Souls

  • While Tormented Souls is active, Hero Takedowns extend its duration by 4 seconds.

[R2] Angel of Death

  • Last Rites heals for 100% of the damage dealt, and its current and future cooldown reduction bonuses are doubled.

[E] Final Curtain

  • Death Shroud leaves a trail in its wake for 4 seconds, applying Reaper's Mark to enemies in its area.

[Active] No One Can Stop Death

  • Activate while dead to immediately respawn at the Altar but increase Malthael's next respawn time by 25%.

Tychus skin is INCREDIBLE. I will have to craft one I think. Very few skins I want that badly.

Still curious about Malthael. Looks like his talents give him a fair amount of mobility. Even a self cleanse. He does still lack a lot of siege, but you'll always out siege the other team if they're dead and you get objectives...

I haven't been this excited to play a Hero since Lunara was announced. He looks very interactive though I feel like his trait might get taken down a notch.  We will see.

I can't wait to play Malthael. His skillset and talents look very interesting.

So, a lot of nudity in development :D Maybe they should add a Nova skin wearing only panties too :P

Sad most of the other skins look pretty like "less work recolored skins"

Malthael looks really interesting, the last about 10 heroes have been pretty boring to me.

Black harvest and Memento Mori are gonna be terrifying together. Just imagine - that's just 1 application and it takes away 20% of ANYONE'S max health. A good cast of Death Shroud followed by Tormented Souls and Wraith Strike to apply the mark to every enemy hero in a fight and you can take away massive amounts of health. Seems a little strong to me, but then again it isn't stackable, so I guess it's still in check. Even still, though, picking up really high health heroes like Azmodan or Stitches is not a great idea against him. Just my thoughts :)

The problem with Malthael is that all heroes that lane against him will loose. He will harrass every hero. Strike, retreat 5 seconds, strike retreat. rinse and repeat. He needs to be priority in team fights.

I dont think he will be a problem on lane, as most heroes with decent sustain can survive the slow % based damage and he will not have much waveclear and will be easy to gank. In team fights he will arguably be stronger, but potentially very vulnerable considering most of his abilities have very mediocre range and he has no defensive gap closers (unless you wrath strike into enemy minions or walls). The main thing that scares me is that he will have a renamed Resurgence of the Storm on his lv20. Resurgence was one of the most broken things in the game and made games last forever as no team was able to go core as enemy tanks and what not that were focus fired just instantly respawned at their own core. As Malthael will be the only hero in the game having that talent, it wont be much of an issue to majority of games but I still think bringing it back is a bad move and its going to be one of the most broken lv20s we have gotten in a long time.

Edit: Examples of laners who will probably destroy Malthael

-Zagara can just push the lane and sit back and can force Malthael to take lot of free damage from banelings and hunter killer as he tries to apply Death Shroud to minions to clear them as well as heal himself.

-Thrall doesnt have that high max hp to be harrassed severely from % based damage and recovers health very quickly with his trait

-Sonya can just spin on the waves and heal for infinite amount of hp as well as harrass Malthael every time he gets to melee range or Sonya lands a spear on him.

-Dehaka can burrow to get to stasis and remove mark from himself, has sustain from essence and can just push the waves in way faster than Malthael can clear and if gets too low can just Hearth home and brushstalker back on lane.

You could even make it so that Raynor can only use his Q, Tychus can only use his Bomb if you want it even more like the event :p

Level 10 Jug of 1,000 Cups Fixed an issue that caused Jug of 1,000 Cups to instantly heal the target if the target Teleports while the jug is on its way to them. Level 13 Lightning Serpent Fixed an issue that caused Spell Power and other damage mods to not apply to Lightning Serpent damage. Level 16 Pick Me Up Fixed an issue that caused Pick Me Up's healing increase to be multiplicative. Lt. Morales Level 4 Trauma Trigger Will now be properly reset when ability cooldowns are reset in Sandbox or Try Mode. Fixed an issue that caused the cooldown displayed on the ability to show incorrectly. Maiev Level 4 Sudden Vengeance Fixed an issue that caused Sudden Vengeance to not activate Ruthless Spirit. Mal'Ganis Level 1 Winged Guard Fixed an issue that caused Winged Guard to lose Block charges to all effects that ignore Armor. Mephisto Level 16 Lightning Reaction Fixed an issue that caused Lightning Reaction to activate around Shades of Mephisto when Mephisto has not selected Mimic. Nazeebo Base Voodoo Ritual [Trait] Fixed an issue that caused Voodoo Ritual and Vile Infection to display the incorrect total damage value in their tooltips. Fixed an issue that caused Voodoo Ritual to not grant stack progress if the target is killed by the last tick of Voodoo Ritual after completing Vile Infection. Level 10 Gargantuan Fixed an issue that caused Gargantuan Stomp damage to not display the correct values in the tooltip. Orphea Level 16 Dead Magic Fixed an issue that caused Chaos-empowered Basic Attacks from Dead Magic to consume Block charges. Rehgar Level 7 Purification When selecting Purification, Purge will now be able to target Unstoppable enemy Heroes. Rexxar Level 10 Unleash the Boars Unleash the Boars damage updated to have Rexxar deal the damage instead of each Boar dealing its own damage. Samuro Base Image Transmission [Trait] Fixed an issue that allowed Samuro to cast Image Transmission on a destroyed Mirror Image if it was queued to happen directly after Mirror Image was cast. If Samuro activates Image Transmission or if a new Mirror Image is created, any Mirror Images that are updated will copy Blessing of the Red if it is present on Samuro instead of increasing their maximum Health as if Blessing of the Red were cast on them. Level 7 Crushing Blows Fixed an issue that caused Crushing Blows to apply to the triggering Critical Strike. Level 20 Three Blade Style Fixed an issue that caused Three Blade Style to increase Mirror Image maximum health if Samuro gained Blessing of the Red between the Images being created and the talent being selected. Fixed an issue that caused Three Blade Style to reset the duration on an active Mirror Image when selected. Sgt. Hammer General Sgt. Hammer's level 1 talent icon changes have been reverted. Stitches Level 13 Meat Hook Fixed an issue that caused the refresh duration to not match the full duration of Meat Hook. Tassadar Level 7 Arc Discharge Will now be properly reset when ability cooldowns are reset in Sandbox or Try Mode. Wind Walk [E] Wind Walk will no longer cancel move and attack commands in the command queue when activated. Critical Strike [W] Activating Critical Strike while Samuro's Basic Attack is being swung will now apply to that attack, rather than the next attack, and will carry the attack reset over to the next Basic Attack.
