Netherlight Crucible (Official Preview)

Blizzard has shared additional information about how the Netherlight Crucible works to clear up some of the confusion caused after yesterday's developer Q/A.

Patch 7.3 introduces a new way to customize your relics called the Netherlight Crucible. Each relic will have three tiers of talents. We made a detailed preview of the Netherlight Crucible here, where we show off pathing and all the different talents you can get. Unlocking slots is gated behind Artifact level that you increase by spending Artifact points. In Patch 7.3, all players will start at Artifact Knowledge level 41 and gain 1 level per week automatically without any research.

Hey guys!

So, after yesterday's Q&A, it's become apparent that there's still some confusion about the Netherlight Crucible and how it works. We've been keeping an eye on your discussions about the topic, and wanted to give some explanations where we can, as well as open up a thread for any additional questions you may have.

Q: How do the Relic "talents" unlock?

A: As your Artifact increases in level (by spending Artifact Power), your Relic slots will level up as well. When you first unlock the Crucible, you'll have access to the first additional trait (a +5 increase to your Artifact's item level) in each slot. The second row unlocks at Artifact level 60, 63, and 66 (for the left, center, and right Relic slots respectively), and the third and final row unlocks at Artifact level 69, 72, and 75. This should all be pretty apparent when you look at those slots in-game, but may not be showing clearly via datamined info.

Q: What did you mean by "it can't double roll a trait"?

A: Just that you will never be able to upgrade a Relic to increase the same Artifact trait twice. If your Relic already has a bonus rank of Wrath of the AshbringerWrath of the Ashbringer on it, that trait will not be one of the three options presented in the bottom row of the Crucible's upgrade tree.

In other words, there's no risk of having your Wrath of the AshbringerWrath of the Ashbringerrelic be "ruined" by not rolling a second bonus to Wrath of the AshbringerWrath of the Ashbringer, because that could never have happened in the first place. However, if you get a relic without Wrath of the AshbringerWrath of the Ashbringer, there's now a chance that it'll gain it from the Crucible.

Additionally, those three options will always be unique; it won't, for example, give you the "choice" between Deflection, Deflection, or Deflection. Aside from making sure you always have options, this means that your odds of having your favorite trait appear on a Relic you'd otherwise have discarded are actually pretty decent.

Q: How do the ranks for the first two rows work?

A: There are no such ranks. We think this is coming from some confusion about how the Netherlight Crucible is showing up in datamining, versus how it actually operates in-game. Once you've unlocked a row in the Crucible, you just select the option you like, and that's it - there's no additional leveling up of those options beyond that.

For those peeking into the data (or anyone else who might be curious): this is because of how we built the system to allow the unlockable effects to stack between each relic. It's just a subtle behind-the-scenes optimization on our end.

Hopefully that will help clear the air about how the Netherlight Crucible works, but we're sure you have more questions, so ask away and we'll do our best to answer what we can! We'll aim to provide an update sometime next week. Thanks!

I think your question is answered here. Seems random.

I still haven't 100% understood how it works, but I guess it's one of the mechanics that are completely simple when you see them ingame (just like Artifact Power and Knowledge seemed complicated before Legion launched).

Still, I see the usual Legion problem: you have to keep one Artifact high, thus making it more difficult to change spec or change class if Blizzard decides that they don't like your spec/class anymore.

I also agree with what Tacos said. Getting a relic you already have and not giving it to a guildie, who might need it, just because you want to have better RNG in the relic reforge.

The choices for row 3 are random. It can be any Artifact trait that has more than one rank, with the exception of the one that's on the relic already.

Here I have a relic that has Weapons of the ElementsWeapons of the Elements. This means that Weapons of the ElementsWeapons of the Elements will never be present in row 3 of this specific relic. However, this doesn't mean it can't be in row 3 of the second or third relic (but only when they do not empower Weapons of the ElementsWeapons of the Elements like this one does. You can have the same traits in row 3. For example I have Wind StrikesWind Strikes on my second and third relic. But neither of those previously had Wind StrikesWind Strikes on them.

You may also be confused about the Artifact level requirements for unlocking the rows/slots, so I try to explain a bit. Each row has a separate Artifact level requirement with the exception of the first one. Instead of unlocking Relic 1 Row 2 > Relic 1 Row 3, Relic 2 Row 2 > Relic 3 Row 3, it will be like this:

Relic 1 Row 2 > Relic 2 Row 2 > Relic 3 Row 2 > Relic 1 Row 3 > Relic 2 Row 3 > Relic 3 Row 3.

  • Relic 1
    • Row 1 - Immediately after you unlock the Crucible
    • Row 2 - Artifact level 60
    • Row 3 - Artifact level 69
  • Relic 2
    • Row 1 - Immediately after you unlock the Crucible
    • Row 2 - Artifact level 63
    • Row 3 - Artifact level 72
  • Relic 3
    • Row 1 - Immediately after you unlock the Crucible
    • Row 2 - Artifact level 66
    • Row 3 - Artifact level 75

The first row is unlocked immediately, so once you have access to the Crucible, you can increase the ilvl of your Artifact by +15 ilvls Netherlight FortificationNetherlight Fortification (+5 per relic *3, the effect stacks).

I can already see this having one major problem, everyone will be rolling on every single relic now.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
