Azerite Traits in Battle for Azeroth Alpha

Recommended Posts

Bbmum9k.jpg

The first piece of Azerite Armor is now available for testing on Battle for Azeroth Alpha. The chest comes with the first batch of Azerite traits.

Azerite Armor

  • Heart of AzerothHeart of Azeroth (legendary amulet) will be used in Battle for Azeroth to empower Azerite Armor (Helm, Shoulders, Chest).
  • Every piece comes with a set of Azerite traits similar to the Netherlight Crucible.
  • Azerite Armor of a higher item level will have the same layout, but more powerful traits.
  • Set bonuses are gone in Battle for Azeroth.

Learn more about Battle for Azeroth in our expansion hub!

There's just one set of choices available for testing right now and you'll need to create a new character to gain access to the chest piece. Azerite traits cannot be rerolled for the time being and you won't get a different set upon respeccing on Alpha.

With the new Alpha build going up today, we're going to enable some initial testing of one piece of Azerite Armor, with one set of choices. To access it, you'll need to create a new character, and you'll find it equipped on your character.

Note that some elements are still placeholder (including the UI), but we're still interested in any early feedback you have on this feature. We'll be rolling out additional pieces of Azerite Armor for testing as the Alpha continues.

The UI is just temporary and will be updated throughout testing.

So not only do we lose the extra abilities from Artifacts (unless Blizzard deems them pivotal towards the function of the specialization), set bonuses are getting replaced by either previous Artifact traits, Legendary item abilities or Netherlight crucible traits. Most of which are just stat padding or procs (Increase haste by X ((for Y seconds)))

You know why I liked set bonuses? They alter the playstyle by changing rotations or made them more interesting. And while I will not dispute the fact that juggling around set items to fit legendary items or non-set items with a higher ilvl - which was a real PITA, in Legion especially - I do not feel like this is a justified solution to the problem.

I also made the latter statement on the post here on IV regarding giving powerful CD's and trinkets GCD's.

Aside from the models and playable races (Lets be honest, some of them look really great), Battle for Azeroth doesn't get me hyped nearly as much as the information towards the opening of Legion did. Information concerning gameplay especially.

I hope they have a different cool feature/mechanic regarding gameplay in store for us, otherwise this might be the most bland and generic expansion to date. If I'm going to be performing the same, no, less interactive rotations than I'm doing right now in Legion, I'm not sure if I'd rather just skip an expansion.

100% agree with you on the set bonuses vs azerite. Looking at just the DK section first I was like "oh soo netherlight crucible x 100, cool.......:". I personally liked set bonuses, it prevented you from doing the exact same rotation the entire expac (like some other current mmos) and could give new utility to previously under used abilities, they were enjoyable and gave a great incentive to raid, current azerite stuff, not so much

also all the effort going into the allied races just kinda concerned me that resources might be shifted from other things (like making good gameplay) I reference ray d tear from WoD. In the end the allied races are little more than skins, BfA so far to me seems like a lot of bells and whistles but not much quality content, time will show though, it always does.

I have to agree. The set bonuses were only bad because of the legendaries. Juggling set bonuses with legendaries that can take up the same slots made gearing totally bland and boring. Without the legendaries, I think we would have been fine keeping the set bonuses.

So, from what I understand, you will need to have 3 different chests for your 3 different specs, given that the first trait choice is a buff for a different spec? Or am I missing something?

I think it is only that it wont change now in this particular alpha build. I believe they intend to have it change per spec eventually.

If this is going to be true in the retail build of the game, then I am confident this is a step down from sets even from a "slot-juggling" point of view. :(

They already said that they plan on making it more spec friendly. This wouldn't be. Pretty sure the plan is to see if these work at all and to test that they do.

These traits are for leveling. They might not even be the right traits. They always said the middle one is meant to be the strongest and this +5 ilvl for all of them definitely seems to be place holder. This is obviously just a test to see if they work. And your not holding on to this piece for long. You eventually will replace it with pieces from dungeons, maybe normal drops, and raids. Maybe even multiple different pieces in the same location. It's still alpha with little context so flipping out makes no sense.

I'm making an assessment based on information provided, wherein I voice my opinion that I criticize their "placeholder" decision with feedback as to why I think it is a bad decision. If information changes or gets added, then I will of course provide further feedback.

Ya but alpha literally means it's still incomplete. So basing an opinion and a criticism on a system without the whole system is pointless complaining. A good criticism provides a problem where you have a majority of the information on what you are talking about. What is wrong with it. And if possible suggestions to fix it. Saying theres no way this system will ever replace a, b and c is pointless since you seen the most basic piece of gear not even in it's final context yet.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
