Battle for Azeroth Is the Fastest Selling Expansion Ever

Recommended Posts

It seems war does pay, even in Azeroth! Battle for Azeroth has become the fastest selling expansion of all time, based on the 3.4 million copies sold on day 1! Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising with the WARcraft franchise, but after 14 years to have the latest expansion break records is a little staggering and more than a little impressive. The number isn't just impressive for Blizzard and WoW expansions, it also makes BfA one of the fastest selling PC games of all time!

For comparison, the latest expansion beat out all time records by "only" 100,000 units, with Cataclysm, Warlords of Draenor and Legion hitting that 3.3 million number previously.  Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime himself comments on how the faction conflict is at the heart of the franchise and how the launch is only the beginning, with the press release itself focusing on what's to come in the following weeks.

Battle for Azeroth™ Becomes Fastest-Selling World of Warcraft® Expansion Ever

Horde and Alliance heroes around the world answer their faction’s call to arms in force as Blizzard Entertainment’s latest release surpasses 3.4 million in day-one sales globally

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 2018-- When the Battle for Azerotherupted worldwide last week, champions of the Alliance and the Horde around the globe were called upon to fight for their faction. Heroes everywhere turned out in force, and Blizzard Entertainment today announced that as of Battle for Azeroth’s first full day of launch on August 14, more than 3.4 million units of the latest World of Warcraft® expansion had sold through worldwide—setting a new day-one sales record for the franchise and making it one of the fastest-selling PC games of all-time.*

Battle for Azeroth is a definitive chapter in the Horde and Alliance conflict at the heart of Warcraft, and it’s been thrilling to see players representing their factions in record numbers and embarking on their war campaigns—not to mention joining in ourselves,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “But the launch is just the beginning of this conflict. More epic content is coming to World of Warcraft in the weeks ahead, and we can’t wait for players to experience the full story as it unfolds over the course of the expansion.”

As Azeroth’s defenders continue to explore new regions in search of allies and resources, preparations are being made for the next great confrontation in the ongoing war:

  • In the coming weeks, players will be able to charge into Battle for Azeroth’s first Warfront, Stromgarde—a 20-player co-op battle for control of a key strategic stronghold in the Arathi Highlands.
  • On September 4, the gates will open to Battle for Azeroth’s first raid—Uldir, an ancient titan facility housing horrific Old God experiments gone awry.
  • Also on September 4, the expansion’s first PvP season and first Mythic Keystone dungeon season will commence. The Mythic Keystone dungeon will feature a unique “seasonal affix”—Infested—that introduces new challenges based on the corrupted denizens dwelling in the Uldir raid.
  • Beyond that, additional updates are in the works that will provide even more content for players on an ongoing basis, including the ability to recruit the Kul Tiran humans and Zandalari trolls as playable Allied Races. More information on future updates will be shared at a later date.

I guess we can congratulate Blizz on some easy money

You are wholly ignorant of what it takes if you think it's easy to make something like this.

I mean they're posting a LOT of hotfixes every single work day (and sometimes weekends), I'm not sure that qualifies as "easy", even if we ignore all the work that went into the expansion itself.

I believe this all due to a single factor: Legion was really incredible, possibly the best expansion in WoW in terms of content, even beating the insanely popular WotLK. People (that I know from other games) who had dismissed WoW years ago, myself included, came back to WoW because of Legion. (personally, i just wanted to try out the demon hunter and even though i don't care for that class, the expansion itself made me fall in love with WoW all over again!). So my point is; Legion was really fantastic and BfA is sort of riding on the coat tails of it's success and I think many people expected BfA to follow suit, so folks bought the game like crazy.

That may sound negative to some, and maybe it is, but I'm not going to lie: It's my opinion that Battle for Azeroth has to be the absolute most stunning expansion in terms of visuals and sound. Even in Legion I didn't find myself just walking around admiring the scenery the way I do in BfA. I mean, have you been to Dazar'alor? I set my homepoint there and every time i hearth i hear that amazing, bombastic orchestra go wild as if they are saying "WELOCOME TO ZANDALAR, MOTHER F***ER!!"

Legion was indeed incredible, but BfA is looking to also be so, and with way less hassle over chasing RNG legendaries and such. Island Expeditions have massive potential if they double down on its rewards, would literally love to have more reason to care and min-max for them!

Indeed, BfA had much less to prove than Legion, which came out after WoD's content drought. There was also the issue of WoD having much of it's important bits of content scrapped, only two tiers of raids and the infamous "selfie patch", that is often brought up in discussions.

That being said, BfA isn't without it's flaws, still plenty of rng, endless ap grind (though at least it's not separate for different specs, still rather unfriendly), mission table and gating of some content that is ready for release anyway. But I like overall atmosphere, especially Kul Tiras, pirates, witches etc., story in quests (even if they are interwoven with standard "kill/gather" fillers) with some likeable characters. I just wish that at least mission table and artifact power went away, as I didn't like these features in WoD/Legion.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the storyline, especially the Zuldazar questline. The zones are outstanding and Nazmir is easily my favorite zone and Bwonsalmdi is a pretty likeable and fun character!

Honestly BfA has a lot of potential with most of the systems in place like Azerite gear and Island expeditions! Looking forward to seeing what this expansion has to offer!

Great expansion.

Bummed out how empty zones feel after the post-launch phasing changes, though.

Have Warmode disabled? With it enabled there are a ton of players of all factions literally everywhere ? got demolished by a horde raid on Boralus yday on my shaman, even!

Can't say I agree with this being the best xpac ever. No. Legion was good. Then they went and nerfed so much, destroying arty weapons, dumbing the game down further and, the areas basically look the same as those in Legion. In fact, most everything Kul Tiras side looks the same, land wise. I don't see anything that stands out as being better. I think people want the game to be what it used to be, to bring back players and, the nostalgia one used to feel. Sadly, that's not the case. I still play it, don't get me wrong. But, it's simply not any better. Legion was so much more. It's just meh. I know other players that feel the same in one regard or the other. I think it's about 50/50 this expac. I don't believe it's the fastest selling expac ever. Catchy title though. We'll see how/if it improves in the near future.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
