Update on the Future of Deadly Boss Mods

Recommended Posts

Here's a statement by Adam who's working full-time on Deadly Boss Mods about the future of the addon.

If you've ever been in a guild, chances are you've come across various boss mods, since they're pretty much mandatory for raiding. BigWigs and Deadly Boss Mods are the two best-known boss mods for World of Warcraft, but this post isn't about recommending either of those addons, but merely to address the future of Deadly Boss Mods by the author and help a community member out.

All these years, Deadly Boss Mods has been maintained full-time by a single developer, Adam aka MysticalOS who has been tirelessly providing updates for the addon since its inception, without getting much in return, despite helping millions.

Today, we simply ask you to read the appeal he posted earlier this week and if you want to support his work, please click the image below or here if you prefer a one-time donation.

Here's Adam's appeal taken from the Deadly Boss Mods website.

For health and stress reasons, as well as just having a plain crappy PC, I will be stepping down from the Mythic raiding scene in WoW. I have been raiding in wow since Burning Crusade and been making mods for DBM since Wrath (almost entirely by myself mind you).

In Mists I was able to switch to doing it full time and greatly improve the quality and feature of mods as well as pace that mods are released for content. Even now, as I write this, DBM has exceptional mods ready to go for mythic+ dungeons and mythic Uldir up through 8/8, with mythrax and ghuun having as best support possible with limited pull data and datamining available. I continue to monitor progression race and scrap through WCL data as it becomes available to update these mods and better support for final 3 will follow as these bosses are downed and data/information for them becomes public. Despite me stepping back from raiding, I do not expect this to change!. After all, Guild I'm in now is only 2/8 (and I was even sat for both of them), doesn't stop me from watching streams, gathering feedback, looking at other peoples logs and producing great mods. Don't take this post as "oh no, DBM is dead". DBM is very much alive!

However, I'm going to be real here. I don't just work on DBM full time. It's all I do period. I have no life, no friends, no time to really do anything else at all. It's not just coding mods here or getting to play the game for money. It's not as peaches as it sounds. It's committing to every ptr/beta even when I have a raid character to maintain on live and raids to go to later that night. It's grinding dungeons, artifact power, world quests, gathering mats, leveling blacksmithing so I can craft even more raid gear, etc. Many hours, EVERY DAY. If there is no ptr/beta, there is always something to catch up on or do. Even then, sometimes something has to give. PVP mods got axed for recently. It's not even just the code refactoring that 8.0 would need (although that's huge reason), it's "where the hell am I going to find time to spam run BGs to make sure these things even work?".

In addition, I'm still a caretaker for another human being too. My 70 year old disabled mother needs my help a lot too. I have to step away from computer a lot to help her do something she can't do on own. Do errands or do chores. In fact, since bfa has launched I've been so buried that my grass is now over 2 feet tall. ?

I'll be honest, I've become so overwhelmingly stressed with it all, that I'm not even able to enjoy raiding anymore. I miss when I used to enjoy actual progression and getting things down, but I haven't in while now. All this grinding, never getting a chance to slow down and breath a little. It's extremely stressful and mentally breaks me down, because it's twice as bad for me. I do all these things for many hours every single day almost 7 days a week, then turn around and have to go through logs of it to make mods or hop into a PTR/beta and do even more of it. What I wouldn't give to just have more hours in day or ability to clone myself so there was enough me to go around to actually do all this and still have real me time to catch breath.

You cannot understand the amount of hours and commitment, all while barely making 1300 (most months)-1450(early expansion) a month. I've wished since I launched Patreon that I'd hit higher goals and be able to bring on help. Expand so I didn't have to do this all alone. Sadly, that just never happened. I absolutely hate asking/begging for money. I always feel I've got to prove to community that I deserve more for the quality of work and effort put in and not beg for charity, which is why up until now I haven't really written this post. Instead, whenever I had a poor month, I only pushed myself harder to try and earn more money. I'd also pay for trips to blizzcon I clearly couldn't afford to try and humanize the person behind the work with some facetime/networking. However, I've been killing myself for almost 2 years now with almost no help. In a game that's only gotten more and more grindy and a content release pace that's only gotten faster and faster, all while amassing CC debt and even refinancing house just to pay annual taxes and living expenses.

My PC sucks because I can't afford to upgrade it and even that's begun to impact raid performance and ability to maintain my mythic raider status.

I have health issues because I can't afford medical insurance or to have dental surgery I need. I take fish antibiotics to manage an abscess tooth I've had since legion pre expansion event. Unfortunately, as my body has gotten more resistant to antibiotics, the infection has spread to 2 other teeth and even begun to spread to parts of my jaw now and if I don't have it treated soon, it could escalate into a blood infection. I've delayed it as long as I could with self medicating to try and save up money to get treatment.

Between both of the above, I'm not even performing well in raids anymore. I've become a liability to my team and am starting to get sat. That's what made me finally realize I need to slow down and try to get myself sorted out. I need to step back from raiding and force myself to take time off to get that dental surgery whether I can afford it or not. Then, once I recover, maybe think about trying to somehow come up with funds to get a PC that doesn't raid at 17fps on Ghuun. After all that, then consider returning to raiding when I can focus and perform at a level that's acceptable to a mythic raiding team.

Again, I don't want either of above to sound like I'm asking for anything. This isn't a huge plea for money either, I still hate asking. Merely trying to explain the stresses that have been upon me for a while now and brought me so low some days and made me doubt my work and myself and consider giving up. Any time I'd think about that though, I'd realize I can't do that for two reasons. I'm not comfortable spending 8-12 hours a day working in field and no one watching over mother, which in the last 2 years alone has had two heart attack scares. I need to be at home. Second reason I can't give up is that I just love working on DBM too much and I firmly believe that as long as there is a WoW, there should be a DBM.

So onto part some of you have been waiting for, what this means for DBM as a mod? This means I'll be doing less of the mythic mod testing, hands on, myself. I'll need more help than ever in spotting bugs, or feature requests. I still do tons and tons of research and stream watching and communicating with raiders needs, but it's still not the same as pulling boss myself and going "oh x will help with this" or "I could have done better at this if DBM had this". So as a community, I ask that you help with that kind of stuff. No request is a dumb request. If you think something is broken or not good enough, tell me. Even if you don't think it's a bug but is annoying, report it. if you're addon savvy enough, run transcriptor and share transcriptor logs with me. Many ways you can help. Between that and how powerful WCL is and how many twitch streams there are, I have no doubt DBM will still continue to be as amazing as it is now and you should see little difference going forward. Might even see improvement with my focus renewed and stress reduced.

I will still be heavily involved in PTR/Beta testing and hopefully kind people will still let me be part of their testing group even if I can't link mythic achievements anymore. Test raid scaling FTW. My mods for ptr/beta will still be king and I'll definitely ensure day 1 mods are still pretty decent (as decent as beta/ptr testing allows). As for live, who knows, maybe you'll still see me in your normal or heroic raid pug testing something in a group that doesn't require my neck to be azerite level x and ilvl over 9000. I may not be a mythic raider anymore but I shall still be around.

---------------------------------------------------
So the TL/DR of it all:

I absolutely love working on DBM and that hasn't changed. Analyzing data and figuring out how things work and coding has never gotten dull to me. I want that much to be clear, those are parts I will always love, that and you guys as a community and helping you guys in discord and seeing your passion for my work. This is just about the other stuff that eats away all my time and sanity and drains me to almost nothing.

So why am I stepping down from raiding then? So I can focus on my health for a minute and try to recharge my sanity and lower my stress. So I can renew my passion for world of warcraft. So I can cut my damn grass. So I can maybe do some side oddball work in those regained raid hours for extra income to actually work on getting a better PC and afford proper medical treatments. I'm just one man doing too much for too little and have to make changes.

What's this mean for DBM? Best case, mods actually improve with my focus up and stress down. Worst case, more initial bugs. You might have to report more things to me that I might miss early on in new content tier.

He obviously needs a psychologist. This amount of work/playing with WoW is morbid and sickly. I can't understand he why not shared this work or leaved a years ago. That sure he needs a help but not with a new PC.

Read the entire thing, he explains in detail why he needs to work from home. It's not about him wanting to play WoW all day...

Yeah I read and he is an addict. Need a help of course but in that. "It's not about him wanting to play WoW all day" He maybe don't want but he do, what is crazy. Nobody force him to live this life and he do this since years! I'm really sad to read stuff like this.

Yeah I'm sorry but when I needed to care about my mother when she had cancer I spent a zero hour with WoW and was my 10000000th problem.

We should be thankful for how much time and stress and health this person invested in creating and updating a mod to make all of us better in what we love, raiding.

So following that logic, anyone who puts in a 60+ hour workweek on any type of job is an addict.

He made DBM his job, like so many other people make their jobs out of their hobbies (ranging from fulltime youtubers to engineers inventing so many cool things). This does not make him an addict, but more close to a burn-out as he has trouble seperating work and private live (aka no time for friends etc.). That is unless you think anyone putting their job first on such a dedicated levels is an addict and needs therapy.

He have a health issues doing it so much and with his own words he have no life. What would you call it if not addiction? This is not a passion long time ago if have such results. I don't want to be the bad guy, but see the facts. Cool to help who needs, but he obviusly need to stop working with WoW.

So where's the fundraiser for this guy for all the work he has done, making raiding more comfortable for so long? Surely the community should reward him for this, at least so he can afford better health and dental care!

He never said the health issues are caused by making WoW his work. I think you can point to the American health system for that, making basic treatments unafordable for any family not working at least 2 jobs to keep themselves afloat. I have read stories from many people working in all kind of branches not being able to afford basic health care. Unfortunately, postponing treatment makes your problem worse in 90% of the cases ?

Heck, even here in the Netherlands the dentist is not covered and eats a hole in your finances if you have any dental problem.

I can relate to him and wish I could give more then my gratitude. Caring for someone you love whom can not take care of them self is a full time job in and of itself, never mind the amount of work he has put into DBM. If nothing else I will make sure everyone I know sees this, at least I can do that much.

People should stop reacting to mental health issues like they are the ultimate plague. Maybe the DBM creator does need a psychologist, or maybe he is an addict. This does not change to the least extend the actual content of his appeal to support his work. Which is, in the end, your choice to support or not. We should never judge lifestyles or health conditions, because most of the times these things are out of our control.

On an other note, it is utterly depressing to see someone fail to get medical treatment for a serious situation (that could be life threatening if left unchecked) because of how absurdly expensive it is. That is a systemic and not a personal failure, in whichever way you view it.

I'm with you on this one, but for different reasons. With at least 10 years of experience providing top quality mods to the community, the guy is a programming God. He should easily manage to find a stay-at-home IT job that could cover a modest lifestyle including health insurance and he could still spend a lot of time with developing DBM (maybe not as much as before, but could still keep it rolling). He is an expert, his place is not in the gig economy collecting alms through Patreon. I love his work, but I'm afraid this is not the ideal solution to his problems in the long run.

Different people having different ways of coping with things. My father died and I turned to wow, raiding and guildies to help me though my hardest times.  (Btw, my therapist thought it was a perfectly fine way to get though the hardest parts of grief)

Instead of your nice high horse, why don't you be thankful and positive towards someone who has spent TONS of times doing things for other people in wow. Does it make you feel like a better person by being so judgmental of someone else?  Guess your mother never taught you "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."  Its people like you who make wow a sometimes toxic environment.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
