Forbes Interview with Ion Hazzikostas on the Aftermath of Battle for Azeroth's Launch

Ion Hazzikostas sat down with Forbes' Heather Newman to talk about the first patch of Battle for Azeroth and how it went.

Just before the Tides of Vengeance Q&A, Ion Hazzikostas had a few things to say about the beginning of BFA. He talked a bit about why some things felt unfinished, especially specific class specialisations. His reasoning was that nothing is ever truly finished and even if they make some changes, general changes to classes and specs will never finish. They didn't want to hold the release of the expansion because of a couple of specialisations that weren't quite there yet.

When it comes to Azerite gear, this quote from Ion was interesting:

Quote

Now I think to some extent, as long as we're not too stingy with the rewards, hopefully if you just need one piece in slot just to get the range extension, you don't necessarily need to stack multiple copies of that trait. You shouldn't feel like, "Oh it's super hard to find one copy of that trait." And if it is, that I think touches on the reward side of it and how we're giving that reward out.

And it's also not the end of the world to think, if you have a 355 pair of shoulders that have that trait and you see a 370 that doesn't, well maybe you'll hold onto the 370 until later. That happens in itemization in WoW to some extent, and it's not unhealthy. Where it starts to get problematic is when you have a 340 and you see a 385 and you're like, "Yeah never mind, I'm not going to even touch the 385."

About the clarity of some systems ingame, Hazzikostas found that the progression of the Reorgination Array in Uldir is clear enough, but the team could have done better with how the Warfront and its objectives work.

On the whole M+ loot mix-up, the team has learned some lessons about better framing and setting up expectations.

Lastly, when it comes to island expeditions, Hazzikostas more or less promised that there will be more rewards (transmogs, pets, toys, even mounts) to make them more desirable. The island zones themselves will have a better feel - not just random spawns of mobs everywhere - and there will also be more random events.

These were the most interesting points of his interview I've picked out. You can read the entire piece here.

There is so much potential there, i hope they dont let them die out.

What was the first patch in Battle for Azeroth? I didn't get to download any patch since BfA went live.

Absolutely right. And this is the case. What are you going to do to fix this exact problem, Hazzikostas?

The first patch of BfA is the launch one, meaning 8.0.0 and the subsequent 8.0.x builds. You downloaded it when it was added to the game in Legion as the “BfA pre-patch”. I just used this expression instead of just repeating “BfA launch” all the time in the article

I didn't read the whole interview, but this women really puts her fingers into wounds and ask very good questions. But then i read the statements and just keep reading and reading, waiting to find an answer...and i don't. I don't find it, i feel he treats the reader like infants. For an example: She asks "How do you balance for abilities..." - and there is no answer. He just talks around and says how it should feel and how we shouldn't feel. Sorry, but thats not an answer. I totally agree with your question:

How are you gonna fix this (these) problem(s), Hazzikostas ?!

It's funny because they already talked about their plans plenty of times, and you guys know that. You really just want another excuse to bitch...

Well then, link your source where they give accurate anwsers. Link me a source where i get informations what they gonna change to fix issues with totaly imbalanced azerite traits (just tweaking them is no solution where problem isnt the scaling) . Link me a source where i can read up what they gonna change to guardian druids and prot warriors beside just saying "we are aware of the problem and working on".

I'm talking about known facts. If you call it "bitching", i'm fine with that. If you're pleased with such an interview...ok, then you are. I'm definitely not.

TL;DR: They're gonna remove the ones that simply don't work and add better ones.

No, you were talking about how they haven't given any answers even though they have (and yes, sometimes the answer has to be "we don't have an answer yet." welcome to the real world where things aren't always easy). Weither you like that answer is a different story.

I'm not here to defend Blizz's design decisions, personally I think azerite gear is an unfixable dead end and should be patched out of the game as soon as possible, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. But constant posts of nothing but regurgitated negativity are not gonna make anything better.

Well, it looks my english is not that good, but i just read about "we learned lessons" and "bring new traits". I do not find an answer how they wanna fix current traits, where the problem isnt the scaling (it lies in design faults). To be fair, yes they give accurate infos, but i'm not pleased with that. So probably this is my problem an not theirs :-).

And yes, i dont expect an answer to every question. I do agree with you sometimes there is a "we dont know yet". Problem is, community has given feedback on some issues during beta, but it was not considered by Blizzard. I do not say communtiy is always right and Blizzard should listen at every feedback. But in some cases, Blizzard is now fixing what was needed before launch. Now they are stick to the concepts/decisions and try to fix things they cant fix (in my view). You see, I do think the same as you wrote concerning azerite gear. But i do not think constant critism is inappropriate. I can tell about different things i personally like in this addon and think Blizzard did a good or evem greate job. On the other hand there are things i simply do not understand their decisions. And even if you call it "bitching" or "regurgitating" , i dont allow to shut me up. Welcome to the real word, where people can say what they think (at least in my country).

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
