Recap of Diablo Immortal World and Q&A BlizzCon 2018 Panel

Recommended Posts

rUJO7B3.jpg

Wyatt Cheng and Matthew Berger talked about the lore of Diablo Immortal and showcased some of its zones, instanced dungeons and of course its classes.

Given the backlash the announcement of Diablo Immortal caused, the panel started with Wyatt Cheng repeating that they love their passionate community and that there are multiple Diablo projects in the works.

Matthew Berger then proceeded to a rundown of the lore and timeline of the Diablo universe, highlighting some major characters. At the aftermath of the destruction of the Worldstone by Tyrael at the end of Diablo 2, in Diablo Immortal we learn that some corrupted fragments of the Worldstone have survived.

Puris the Decimator, who was available at the BlizzCon demo, is one of the game's bad guys. The main antagonist is Skarn, the Herald of Terror and Diablo's lieutenant, who is trying to resurrect his master.

Your allies include Valla the Demon Hunter, her master Josen, Jacob Staalek (he holds Eldruin while Tyrael is “dead”) and Deckard Cain.

The devs then showcased some of Diablo Immortal's outdoor zones.

Bilefen

1dfbc31812ce3da23ad8c801e84d24a7.jpg

It's a swampy island, whose main town is Port Justinian. The Wizard Jin is at the Bilefen and the Kikuras Rapids dungeon is also located there. A Worldstone fragment is corrupting the whole area.

Zoltun Kulle's Library

e84fe434ff1ef27f9d6c1f4ca5a6c513.jpg

The wizard has a number of caches throughout Sanctuary and this is one of them.  Another corrupted Worldstone fragment is here. The area is guarded by a curator, which is actually a copy of Zoltun Kulle who doesn't realise it's a copy.

Shassar Sea

Young Valla and her master Josen are trying to find a demon nest that has formed in the area.

In Diablo Immortal, instanced dungeons are areas where monsters stay dead when you kill them and have unique mechanics that cannot be found in outdoor zones. Three dungeons were shown.

Tomb of Fahir

You must unlock seals to proceed through the dungeons. There's a Broodmother boss and a lot of arachnoids!

Kikuras Rapids

960edb19feb5dc5f56587905df4d4e96.jpg

You ride a raft to access it. Wyatt Cheng described it as "a theme park water ride with monsters trying to kill you". There's a Fetid Patriarch boss.

Forgotten Tower

It's the same area as Act I from Diablo 2. The Forgotten Tower is the home of the Countess and you will find out that her cultists have managed to bring her back to life.

Afterwards, we learned the story and saw some skills of the six Diablo Immortal classes.

Barbarian

  • Furious Charge: Makes use of touch controls by aiming skill
  • Hammer of the Ancients
  • Throw: Throw an enemy to another enemy.

Necromancer

  • Command Skeletons
  • Corpse Lance
  • Skeletal Spikes: Summons bones from the ground to impale enemies.

Crusader

  • Blessed Shield: Can be aimed, damages enemies on the way out and back in and whoever doesn't get killed, get gripped to melee range.
  • Sweep Attack: Gain damage and range the longer you hold your thumb on the skill.
  • Falling Sword: Adjusted to be a two stage ability, target a location drops a sword on a location. Then activating the ability a second time causes you to crash down from above. Can use other abilities in between first and second activation.

Wizard

  • Μeteor
  • Ray of Frost: Two-step activation - start the channel and end it.
  • Ice Crystal: Two-step ability. First, you place the crystal Then with the second activation or when its duration expires, the crystal explodes. Can combine it with Ray of Frost.

Demon Hunter

  • Daring Swing: Reposition yourself from one position of the battlefield to another, while shooting from an advantageous position
  • Strafe
  • Rain of Vengeance

Monk

  • Seven-Sided Strike
  • Kick: You can use it off of walls to rebound off them and then hit enemies
  • Imprisoned Fists: Punch the spirit out of an enemy

A very brief Q&A followed. A couple of fans prefaced their questions by apologising for the other fans' negative reactions. Here are the answers:

  • Too early to say if Mephisto is in Diablo Immortal. Some of the Prime Evils are returning faster than they should.
  • They are currently looking at what itemisation will be like. Legendary powers will be present. They will also add socketing and other ways to upgrade/improve items.
  • Haven't figured out business model. Gameplay first.
  • Team thinks there is some middle ground between everything being soulbound and the auction house in regards to trading in Diablo Immortal.
  • We will probably see the history of other classes (not just the Demon Hunters) in the game, since it covers a big time frame lore-wise.

All i can think about when looking at these images is "How many ways are we gonna need to pay to actually play those maps?" Not that I'm ever gonna touch it, as it's a watered down scrap pile, but I do find myself curios as to how many ways they're gonna bill people.

Still not playing this.

Seriously Cheng, all of this could have been avoided if you just put a flaming IV at the end of the panel

Lol, assuming he had any control over what was being presented.

Uncommon Patron

With as much grief as the announcement was getting for this game.  I actually played it at BlizzCon and thought it was quite fun.  I look forward to it's release.

Come on, guys... why can't you all trust Blizzard for once? Stop saying that microtransiction will be there, the game is not out yet, can you all predict future now?
And... honestly, where on Earth can you find maps that look like these on a mobile game?

Seriously? That would be sad for the playerbase, even if the company men think it's a positive thing.

What is the name of this clone?

So any hack&slay is a clone now?

I have seen their games, and seriously...  the always mentioned "Crusader of light" (that many claim, diablo immortal is just a reskin of it) has a different playerperspective (camera), a bit clunky animations and effects, and horrible design assets (asian mmo style on character models, and besides characters, all the environment and landscape looks horrible.)

Of course, if blizzards wants netease to build a hack and slay game, they would use their most recent engine or base for that. But if a game looks better, plays better and is overall a better experience, is it really JUST a reskin? By that logic any shooter made with the unreal engine is the same game... what more important in the final mobile gaming situation is the user experience.

Online i found several videos, by some wannabe haters, that jump onto this bandwagon of "diablo doomsayers". It's so silly to see someone go ham when just seeing a slightly comparable casting animation like a lightning nova and scream "OMG it's just a reskin".

I would wait and judge the gameplay, instead of making up some silly claims without any substance.

Besides all of that, what i am curious about is the user interface and the progression. Because i wanted to try hack and slay games on the phone but i never got into that, because the user is bombarded with ads or so many different tabs with daily progress/weekly progress/story progress. You dont know what is where and what is good and what is a waste. This experience, i believe, blizzards D.i. will handle better than any other mobile game and i definitely want to give it a try. But still, have to wait and see.

Mh, maybe because Blizzard is trying to make the most money with the least effort in the last years? and microtransaction are exactly what you would choose if that is your aim?

It's called pattern prediction and is math-related not soothsaying. One is science, the other is just magical nonsense.

Or you can call it educated guess. "Earth will not be hit by a meteor in the next week". Do I now it becaucse I can see the future? No.

Is the statement nevertheless based on solid ground? Sure.

We do not know as a 100% fact that there will be microtransactions. But chances are high that there will be.

Why is that even a point of discussion? There are just three options. Buy-price without micro-tr. , Free to play with micro-tr. or buy-price with micro-tr.

This is just a guess: but i dont think blizzard will have Ads in the game, so it will be one of the three payment models i mentioned

The game has to bring in some money. I would prefer it to be free to play with micro-transactions, so it will reach the highest amount of players. The main question will always be HOW micro-transactions are implemented. Either of the three options i mentioned could be implemented in a good way, or a bad way.

You know why I hate it already? Because I have Windows phone... and all 21 of us will never be able to even try it.... ?

They could make one version for Windows Store, that way everyone would be covered... ?

A brand new season arrives in Diablo 3 next month! Blizzard have the full preview ready so let's take a look at the cosmetic rewards, season journey, Haedrig's Gift sets, and more!
      Season 33 (Source)
Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 33: Shades of the Nephalem. Starting on October 25 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST, Nephalem can harness the power of the Shades of the Nephalem theme, which first debuted with Season 22. For an in-depth look at what’s coming, take a gander below. Also, Season 32 will officially come to an end on October 20. Seasonal Journey
      Season Theme
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
      Season Journey Rewards
      Seasonal Conquest
      Haedrig’s Gift
      Patch 2.7.8
      Season Theme
The shadows, they are moving, and they seem… animated. Like they have a will of their own. Whatever this trickery is, perhaps you can use it to your advantage. Let’s see what the demons say when you fight side by side with your own shadow! Shadows of the Past: Activating a Shrine/Pylon will spawn in a shadow clone of your class, who will come with a randomly chosen 1 of 3 predetermined builds. This clone's power will scale with your character and will last for 1 minute (unless your character dies). See this article for the shadow clone variations that can spawn when activating. Kanai’s Cube: Kanai’s Cube will have a fourth slot this season. This fourth slot will have the choices of the first 3 slots but will not stack with any of them, providing additional flexibility to your build. Return to Top Season Cosmetic Rewards
Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to any who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 33, this means awards originally available from Season 9 are returning to the Season Journey. However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve already participated in previous Seasons. We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Prove your worth in the Trial of Tempests to earn the Stupendous Contraption pet and the Industrial Portrait Frame.
In addition to the Chest and Gloves slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn the Pandemonium portraits, and the cute and craggily Rocky pet first introduced in Season 9. Return to Top Season Journey Rewards
If you’ve been diligently slaying demons before and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of five: Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a Level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within five minutes. Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55. All I Do is Win: Complete 2 Conquests this Season. Life Goes On: Kill Maghda at Level 70 in under fifteen seconds on Torment XIII difficulty. Money Ain’t a Thang: Slay Greed on Torment XIII difficulty. Treasure Goblins outside of Nephalem Rifts will sometimes open portals to Greed’s domain, The Vault. Take U There: Reach Greater Rift Level 60 Solo. Greater Rift keystones can be obtained from any Nephalem Rift guardian. Power Amplification: Use Kanai’s Cube to augment an Ancient Legendary item with a Level 50+ gem. Cubic Reconfiguration: Use Kanai’s Cube to reforge a Legendary item. Return to Top Seasonal Conquest
Want to prepare your Conquest plan for Season 33? Here are the challenges you’ll face: For Curses!/Stars Align, pick any Cursed Chest event that requires killing monsters and defeat over 350 or more at level 70 on Torment X or higher. Also returning for Season 33 is Sprinter/Speed Racer, where you’re challenged to complete the entire Diablo III campaign from Act I to Act V at Level 70 in under an hour! Next is Avarice/Avaritia, where all that glitters is gold—that is, if you can complete a 50 million Gold streak outside of The Vault or its Inner Sanctum. We're also bringing Thrill/Superhuman, which requires completion of a Greater Rift Level 45—solo and without any Set items equipped. And lastly we'll be bringing back Speed Demon/Need for Speed, meaning you'll need to beat a Torment X Nephalem Rift at Level 70 in 2 minutes. Best of luck! Return to Top Haedrig’s Gift
Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works: Completing Acts II, III, and IV of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts. Each Gift contains a few pieces from one of your Class Sets. Players can only unlock one Class Set in this manner per Season across Hardcore and Non-Hardcore, so choose wisely! The set you receive depends on the class of the character you’re playing when you open each Haedrig’s Gift. To collect a full Class Set, you’ll need to open all three on the same character. Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 33: Barbarian - Might of the Earth Crusader - Thorns of the Invoker Demon Hunter - The Shadow's Mantle Monk - Monkey King's Garb Witch Doctor - Raiment of the Jade Harvester Wizard - Firebird's Finery Necromancer - Grace of Inarius Return to Top Patch 2.7.8
Our next patch goes live on October 22 and introduces quality-of-life updates for demon slayers on Mac. New Mac Executables/Mac Native Silicon and Intel: These updates will allow Diablo III to run on new versions of the macOS. PC Experience Stability: This PTR is open to both Mac and PC players. While the focal point of the 2.7.8 PTR is to test technical updates for Mac, we want PC users to monitor their playing experience as well. If you experience any stability issues or difficulties in connecting with Mac players, please give us that feedback. Return to Top

Season 32 in Diablo 3 starts on July 12 and here is the official preview with more details.
      (Source)
Sanctuary needs you to answer its call for aid in Season 32: Ethereal Memory. Starting on July 12 at 5 p.m. PDT/CET/KST, Nephalem can harness the power of the Ethereal Memory theme, which first debuted with Season 24. For an in-depth look at what’s coming, take a gander below.

      Seasonal Journey
      Season Theme
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
      Season Journey Rewards
      Seasonal Conquest
      Haedrig’s Gift
      Season Theme
As the Nephalem reflect on Sanctuary's history, instruments of power from a bygone era resurface. These ethereal memories will grant those persistent enough to search for them unimaginable power. Legends of the past will manifest once more in the present, and you must decide how to best use these gifts—for ethereal power is fugacious by nature, and will soon return to being no more than a myth.
For this seasonal theme, we were inspired to reimagine how Ethereal items could manifest in Diablo III, with 21 iconic weapons making a return from Diablo II. In Season 32, Ethereals are rare, powerful, and fleeting items.
Season 32 reintroduces Ethereals, a weapon-type that players will be able to acquire and hunt for in their upcoming seasonal journey. Ethereals will roll a powerful set of affixes, a random Class Weapon Legendary Power and a random Class Passive Power. Ethereals will have unique icons, names, item types, and sounds originally found in Diablo II. For additional details on Ethereals, check out the list below:
Ethereals are account bound and can only be dropped by monsters, chests, and destructibles, but do not require your character to be Level 70 in order to drop. Ethereals cannot be acquired through Kanai's Cube or from Kadala. Ethereal rarity drop rate is set between Ancient and Primal items. There are 3 unique Ethereals per class. Each Ethereal has fixed affixes and rolls one random Legendary Weapon power and one random Class Passive Skill. Only one Ethereal can be equipped at a time. Ethereals ignore item durability loss. Legendary Powers and Class Passive Skills rolled on Ethereals do not stack with the same power equipped through Kanai's Cube, Items or Skills. Ethereals cannot be Enchanted, Transmogrified, Dyed, Reforged, or traded. Ethereals can be augmented. Collecting all 21 Ethereals during the season will reward players with the Feat of Strength, Ethereal Recollection. Players who accomplish this will have all Ethereal transmogrify options available for future seasonal and non-seasonal play. Ethereals only drop in Seasonal play and will not transfer to your non-seasonal character when the season ends. Return to Top
      Season Cosmetic Rewards
Beginning with Season 17, we began re-introducing previous Seasonal rewards to make them available to players who may have missed them the first time around. For Season 32, this means awards originally available from Season 8 are returning to the Season Journey.

However, we know it’s nice to have something new to aim for if you’ve participated in previous Seasons. We’re continuing to provide new End of Journey rewards as introduced in Season 17, with two new cosmetic rewards for those who complete the entirety of the Season journey. Feast your eyes upon the Teganze Warrior Portrait Frame and Bat pet!

In addition to the Boots and Pants slots of the exclusive Conqueror Set, you’ll be able to earn a series of portrait frames that smolder with demonic fires of the Burning Hells. The iconic wings of Andariel will also be available once more, allowing you to truly embrace your inner Maiden of Anguish.
      Season Journey Rewards
If you’ve been diligently slaying demons for the past few Seasons and reached Conqueror in the Season Journey each time, you’ve surely accrued a few extra stash tabs. You’ll earn one additional tab each Season by finishing the Conqueror tier, up to a maximum of 5:
Guardian of Sanctuary: Finish a level 70 Nephalem Rift on Torment XIII difficulty within 5 minutes. Gem of My Life: Level three Legendary Gems to level 55. All I Do is Win: Complete 2 Conquests this Season. Warm Thoughts: Kill Izual at Level 70 in under 15 seconds on Torment XIII difficulty. Return to Top
      Seasonal Conquest
Want to prepare your Conquest plan for Season 32? Here are the challenges you’ll face!
For Curses!/Stars Align, pick any Cursed Chest event that requires killing monsters and defeat over 350 or more at Level 70 on Torment X or higher. Haedrig’s Gift
Finally, the Class Sets rewarded for completing certain chapters in the Season Journey (courtesy of Haedrig’s Gift) have rotated once more. We’ve listed the available Sets below. For those new to Seasons, here’s how it works:
Completing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of the Season Journey will reward you with three of Haedrig’s Gifts.
Here are the sets granted by Haedrig’s Gift in Season 32:
Barbarian – Immortal King’s Call Crusader – Seeker of the Light Demon Hunter – Natalya’s Vengeance Monk – Uliana’s Stratagem Necromancer – Trag’Oul’s Avatar Witch Doctor – Spirit of Arachyr Wizard – Vyr’s Amazing Arcana
