The Story of Wrathion in Patch 8.2.5

Recommended Posts

Wrathion received a new model in Patch 8.2.5 and while we don't encounter him physically, he's part of the latest story which involves Spiritwalker Ebonhorn. The article contains spoilers.

Intro

In Patch 8.2, we helped Spiritwalker Ebonhorn retrieve the first Essence as part of the intro questline. We learned that he is Ebyssian, an uncorrupted member of the Black Dragonflight. Multiple Agents of the Black Prince are scattered across the new zones since Rise of Azshara and we know Wrathion is watching cautiously watching our every move.

In Azshara's Eternal Palace, we learned that we collected Azerite for the Heart of Azeroth Heart of Azeroth to shatter the prison of an Old God as opposed to healing Azeroth.

Wrathion in Patch 8.2.5

In Patch 8.2.5, N'Zoth's whispers are driving Ebyssian crazy and we help him with Wrathion's assistance. The Black Prince received an updated model in Patch 8.2.5 and communicates with us through torn journal pages. For some reason, he does not want to be seen by anyone, and later on, we find out that N'Zoth and his minions are searching for him too. From the journal entries, we learn that Wrathion has been seeking out ways to defeat the Old Gods and wants to help us get rid of N'Zoth once and for all, meaning that we will definitely hear from him in Patch 8.3 and beyond.

Whispers of N'Zoth

We've got an emergency, champion! We need ye in the Chamber o' Heart once more. Somethin' nasty is gettin' into Ebonhorn's head. He can't shake it loose. Maybe ya can help him out!

Quote

Magni Bronzebeard: Champion! We've got a problem. Ebonhorn, he--

MOTHER: Old God contamination detected. Initiating sanitization protocol.

Magni Bronzebeard: No, don't sanitize! Champion, ye've got to get back to the Chamber right now!

Go to the Chamber of Heart and speak to Kalecgos.

Quote

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: The voices... I can't...

Magni Bronzebeard: Hold it together, Ebonhorn! Don't give in tae them!

Kalecgos: I know... someone... who might be able to help.

Spies to the Left and Right

Ebonhorn cannot resist the whispers for long. The dark forces that once corrupted the black dragonflight seek to overwhelm the world once again. We need a way to fight back. While I a loathe to mention him, I do know of someone who has been studying Old Gods in order to better combat their insidious power: Wrathion. The Black Prince will be difficult to find. He has associates in Pandaria, in the Tavern of the Mists at the Veiled Stair. I suggest you begin your search there.

Kalecgos wants you to seek out Wrathion at the Tavern in the Mists, because he's Ebonhorn's only hope. There, you will find two Blacktalon Bodyguards and Wrathion is nowhere to be found.

Quote

Left: The Black Prince told us to expect you. Said his brother would need his help eventually.

Left: We're supposed to deliver a message to you... but not while we're being watched.

Right: Get rid of our uninvited guests. Then we can talk.

You must slay 6 Lurking Observers to receive Torn Journal Page #7 Torn Journal Page #7.

Quote

Left: Here. The prince wanted you to have these. For your eyes only.

Torn Journal Page #7 Torn Journal Page #7 reads as follows:

Quote

Page 1

As I suspected, little of what the Shen'dralar collected in their archives survived their flight from Eldre'thalas. Still, there was some knowledge to be gleaned from the tomes they were forced to leave behind as they escaped the Horde's aggression.

References to the Old Gods are vague and oblique, existing only as archaeological footnotes from a time before the Sundering. The Shen'dralar adept in the arcane arts as they were, could not completely unravel the intricacies of the Black Empire's dark magic.

Yet a few of them did dabble in the Void, and the lessons they learned grant me hope that N'Zoth's own power can be wielded against him.

Page 2

Even in its abandoned state, the library's meticulous organization truly impressed me. If only more of it had remained intact.

Such an extensive loss of wisdom is lamentable. The Shen'dralar toiled ceaselessly to collect the librams that line their bookshelves, only for the lion's share of it to be consumed by the flames of war.

But such is the nature of warfare, is it not? Seldom does it accomplish the intentions of its architects, and never without leaving immeasurable devastation in its wake... especially when the Horde and the Alliance are the forces in conflict. Can one ultimately say that victory is worth the price that must be paid to achieve it?

Perhaps it is, in some cases. But the verdict is not as easily reached as I once thought.

Wrathion is notoriously secretive about his plans and you will receive 750 Artifact Power for handing in the quest.

Black Winged Shadow

Obviously, the Black Prince isn't here. Trust me when I say he's not an easy one to find. If I were you, I'd make my way to Blackrock Mountain. There's a terrace carved into its slopes, where Nefarian once made his lair. Wrathion has been monitoring that place for a long time. Even if he's not there himself, you might find someone who knows where to look. It's clear you're not the only one searching for him. Watch your back.

Quote

Right: It seems you're not the only one on Wrathion's trail. Which must be why he's taken so many precautions.

Left: Watch your back. Whoever else is looking for him, I doubt they just want to chat.

Now, you must seek out Wrathion outside the entrance to Blackwing Descent. There, you will find a Blacktalon Watcher, who's being drained of all knownedge by N'Zoth's minions. (Extracting Extracting). You must kill the two Sleepless Operatives and the Sleepless Interrogator to proceed.

Quote

Sleepless Interrogator: [Shath'Yar] Hwr... whyrr..

Blacktalon Watcher: My head... they... reached into my mind...

Sleepless Interrogator: Too... late...

After defeating all enemies, you can talk to the Blacktalon Watcher, who tells you to seek out Wrathion in Karazhan and gives you Torn Journal Page #16 Torn Journal Page #16:

For all the time I have spent in Pandaria, only recently did I make acquaintance with the Lorewalkers. The sheer volume of knowledge to be found within their scrolls was marvelous to behold. Lorewalker Cho taught me much about the legends of the Black Empire. He can be... shall we say... long-winded at times, but the wisdom he can impart upon those with the patience to listen is valuable indeed.

The Shado-Pan, in contrast, have little time for conversations not directly related to the defense of the pandaren. Their Omnia scholars have accumulated centuries of practical expertise in combatting the dark powers of the sha without succumbing to their influence. Given that the Sha originated from the essence of Y'shaarj, the underlying principles of their techniques could prove effective in resisting the whispers of the Old Gods.

Page 2

I must admit, I felt a certain kinship with the Shado-Pan that I did not anticipate. The pandaren do not maintain a standing army, and so the Shado-Pan serve as their sole defense against both the mantid and the sha.

Though they have trained themselves to seal away their emotions, there is an air of solitude about them that I recognize all too well. It is no easy task to stand alone against the darkness so that others may bask in the light.

But someone must always make that stand. And they can never allow themselves to falter.

To the Catacombs!

I held out as long as I could, but... the whispers were too strong. You must hurry to Karazhan. The Black Prince said he intended to study the artifacts stored within its catacombs. Please, do not allow my failure to bring about his doom!

Your next stop is Karazhan and at the Catacombs, you'll find a Slain Blacktalon Lookout, whose body is still warm to the touch, meaning he's not been dead for long. After searching the body for more journal pages, you'll receive Torn Journal Page #25 Torn Journal Page #25:

Page 1

Few mysteries intrigue me more than the lost knowledge and technology left behind by the titans. The zeal with which I pursued their secrets in the past may have bordered on excess, but the quest in and of itself is one that must be continued. I know for certain that the Forge of Origination is the key to dealing the Old Gods their ultimate defeat, though I have not yet been able to discern the exact manner in which it is meant to be used.

My hope was that the Vault of Archavon would hold the answers I seek. Unfortunately, though the Vault contained much material for me to study, the giants who make it their home were... less than cordial to me upon my arrival, I cannot say I blame them, given their previous encounters with "visitors" from the Alliance and the Horde.

Page 2

It is strangue to think on how those events predate my own hatching. While I plumb the depths of forgotten lore from eons past, others have lived through crises I will only ever know from historical accounts. There must be someone on Azeroth who possesses the understanding I require, and perhaps my next course of action should be to seek them out.

A pity the former Aspects are so reluctant to trust me. Even after all my research, their familiarity with the titans' handiwork surely eclipses my own. But given the troubled hitory of my dragonflight... of Deathwing, Onyxia, Nefarian... and myself... I cannot say I blame them, either.

Completing the quest rewards 1,000 Artifact Power.

On the Trail of the Black Prince

<It looks like a fight took place here. N'Zoth's agents must have already entered the catacombs beneath Karazhan. The dead lookout still has a set of keys on him. Perhaps they will unlock the door. With any luck, you can find Wrathion before N'Zoth's agents and gain something that can help Ebonhorn.>

The final portion of the questline takes place within the Catacombs, and you must investigate The Ways of the Old Gods The Ways of the Old Gods, Wrathion's Journal Page, and slay X'korr the Compelling.

You will receive the final Torn Journal Page #58 Torn Journal Page #58

Quote

Page 1

It is impossible to set eyes upon Karazhan without reflecting on the dark saga of its master. As befitting his title, the Last Guardian of Tirisfal had amassed a vast collection of writings and artifacts that dwarfs even that of the Kirin Tor.

The insight I gained from the tower's library allowed me to reach a significant milestone: I have concocted a tonic that, when imbibed, will cleanse a minor amount of Old Gods' corruption and silence their whispers. Such is merely the first step on the path to defeating them once and for all, but it warrants celebration, nonetheless.

Page 2

Though I knew there were valuable lessons to learn in Karazhan, I did not anticipate that some of them would emerge from my conversations with Medivh's lingering spirit. He recounted his struggles under Sargeras's' influence as the dark titan twisted his soul from within, and I was left to wonder if similar thoughts plagued Neltharion as he descended into madness himself.

But Medivh also spoke of his spirit's return to the mortal realm, and how it guided Azeroth's champions in the fight against the very forces that once corrupted him. He said something on which I ruminate even now: "I can never change the actions of my past," he told me, "but I can forge a new legacy to leave behind."

Page 3

A new legacy. In the end, perhaps that is what I am truly after. A way to make amends for my father's failings... as well as my own. A legacy worthy of the black dragonflight's original sacred charge: the defense of Azeroth. The end of the Old Gods.

I do hope these pages have proven to be of use to you. I would hate to think my agents wasted their time delivering them to you as instructed. Rest assured that when the time is right, you will have my aid in the fight against N'Zoth. In the true battle for Azeroth.

Oh, and one last request: Burn this journal. It is time my actions speak for me.

Save Ebonhorn

You'll find Potion of Mental Clarity Potion of Mental Clarity near a note and must head back to the Chamber of Heart to administer it to Ebonhorn.

Quote

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: The whispers... are silent...

Spiritwalker Ebonhorn: Wrathion crafted this potion? So you were able to find him?

Kalecgos: No, he eluded both N'Zoth's minions and <Player Name>. But it seems he has found a way to resist the influence of the Old Gods.

Wrathion's Journal

Finally, you'll hand MOTHER Wrathion's Journal Wrathion's Journal instead of burning it. I don't know if this is the wisest thing to do, but MOTHER commits information from the journal to memory in order to formulate fortification schematics for Chamber of Heart and destroys the incomplete journal in the process. Finally, you earn 1,000 Artifact Power.

Quote

MOTHER: Scanning transcribed data.

MOTHER: Complete.

Magni Bronzebeard: MOTHER! Why'd ye do that?

MOTHER: Data committed to memory. Physical record no longer required. Destruction executed as advised.

Magni Bronzebeard: I suppose Wrathion doesn't want tae be found. But the knowledge he's accrued could be critical in the fight against N'Zoth.

Magni Bronzebeard: Thank ye, champion. I'll get tae trackin' down the Black Prince. Not too many places ye can hide when Azeroth's own speaker is lookin' fer ye.

The more they dwelve in those stuff with the Azeroth Titan the more I want an entire expansion centered just around it and Ulduar, which was actually going to happen after WotLK.

I found [Burnt Journal Page] in the back room where the portal back to the Heart Chamber was located after defeating the boss and collecting the potion. The item description just says "Charred beyond readability by a concentrated flame"

It's a grey item, but I wonder why they left in as an intractable item for? it's only worth 1 copper anyway. *shrugs*

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
