Shadowlands System Updates: Legendaries, Weekly Chest, Class Identity, Level Squish

Recommended Posts

The removal of RNG elements from various aspects of the game in the Shadowlands expansion results in various quality-of-life improvements in system and rewards.

In Shadowlands, we're going to see less RNG tied to Crafting and Professions as a whole. Crafted items will come with specific gems slotted in, so you will no longer need to hope for the best as a crafter. This results in Professions being more relevant throughout the expansion.

The weekly loot chest (Grand Challenger's Bounty) currently pulls loot from a loot table of more than a hundred items, which can cause frustration, but in the next expansion, players will be presented with a list of multiple items and the ability to pick a useful one rather than waiting for another shot the following week. There will even be a failsafe mechanism in place when none of the items on the list suit you.

Legion Legendaries are returning, but the way you'll obtain them won't be random and you will be able to pick a specific one and craft it through your progression in Torghast.

Class identity will play a factor in Shadowlands, some class abilities will be made available to all specializations. The final goal is to even restore some abilities to account for the pruning.

The level squish is finally happening! Max-level characters will be downscaled to level 50 and level up to 60 in the new expansion. You will then be able to level from 10–50 in Battle For Azeroth or any expansion you wish to experience from start to finish and then move straight into Shadowlands.

Every level is meaningful after the squish, so you will receive a new ability, talent, dungeon access when you level up.

SYSTEM AND REWARDS

With Shadowlands, one of our core design philosophies is providing players with a better sense of agency. We want players to feel they have a choice over the destiny of their character and the types of rewards they want to earn. To that end, here’s some of the systems and themes we’re exploring in Shadowlands:

  • Professions: We want to make sure that crafting professions have more options to create a specific item rather than making multiple items in the hope of one with just the right stats. Instead, you might craft an item with specific gems slotted in to make the item you want.
  • Weekly loot chest: We’re looking into ways for providing players with choices between multiple items from loot chests so that each time they receive an item from the chest, they have more of an opportunity to choose an item they find useful rather than waiting for another chance the following week.
  • Legendaries: We want to offer a way toward building a Legendary of your choice and imbuing it with powers that you’ve earned.

With the expansion, we want to step back and focus on class identity first over specialization identity. This means moving back some of the class abilities to all specializations that may have been moved into one spec or even restoring some abilities.

We’re still early in devising and refining these systems, but you can learn more in the Deep Dive panel.

LEVELING UPDATES

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands introduces a smoother, more streamlined leveling experience. World of Warcraft—and as that continues to grow, we wanted to find a way to better pace the experience for players as they level. Over the years, we’ve found ways to speed up the leveling process, but we did so at the cost of a providing a complete experience for players, who would outpace a zone’s content and miss out on the ongoing narrative.

It’s also important for us to return to a time when every level is meaningful. This means that when you go from one level to another, you get something new such as an ability or spell, access to a dungeon, the ability to use mounts, or a new Talent tier.

We’re also updating the new-player experience to showcase more of the best World of Warcraft has to offer. New players will begin their journey in a whole new level 1–10 experience. Players will then be able to level from 10–50 in Battle For Azeroth or any expansion they wish to experience from start to finish. Finally, they’ll move on into Shadowlands, where players can go from level 50–60. This ultimately means that leveling will be faster, and players will be able to experience the complete story of an expansion while preparing to journey to the Shadowlands.

More information will be available tomorrow after the Deep Dive panel.

From a role-playing perspective, this is a huge breath of fresh air for your alts. You could give them specific backstories and totally stay in those environments until max level now. A Dwarf Hunter in Northrend? A Zandalari Troll in Pandaria? Perhaps a Mag'har Orc in Outland? These gameplay tweaks are the freedom we solo nerds have been craving!

Any info on when the level squish will happen? Like how the stat squish happened before BFA?

Shadowlands pre-patch. No ETA, obviously.

What will happen to the alts that ain't 120?

They will be scaled down to a level lower than 50.

The level squish may just be the DUMBEST thing Blizzard has ever done, narrowly beating out the garrison but not quite beating Classic in terms of stupidity

Some of the changes seem ok, but I am not a fan of the "Level in one zone from 10-50". To me, I like going from zone to zone as I level, getting a different view, different experience. Also, I have been talking to a few people who never played before and are thinking about playing in the near future, if you level in one expansion before Shadowlands, it kinda takes away from the people experiencing each expansion on some level without having to make alts for each individual experience.
I also feel the level cap is too low.I can see reducing it instead of going to 130+ but I feel Max level should be roughly 70 like it was in BC. Thats just My 2 cents. *shrugs*

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

How to Get the Spirit of Eche'ro Mount
      1. Download MapCoords or some other add-os that displays coordinates in the game.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
