The Lost Codex BlizzCon 2019 Interview

Recommended Posts

J9XnoSD.jpg

The Lost Codex sat down with Frank Kowalkowski and Steve Danuser to discuss Shadowlands lore.

Check out our BlizzCon 2019 Content Hub for more details!

Interview Highlights

  • We'll see Uther and other characters that died on Azeroth in the Shadowlands.
  • The Islands AI technology is available and ready if they need to use it in the future.
  • Procedural spawning that we saw on Island Expeditions will be used in Torghast.
  • We know that Odyn gave his eye to an unknown entity in the Shadowlands that works for the Jailer and there was a specific reason why they wanted the Keeper's eye.
  • We will learn that the Jailer had a group of like-minded allies that have worked with him throughout our timeline, some of them doing things very far back in history that are only now coming to fruition and were a part of a larger plan.
  • In the new expansion, we'll learn more about the pact between Helya and Sylvanas, it has something to do with the lantern, but it's not something players would have anticipated.
  • They will revisit Allied Races and decide whether or not they should be unlocked for new players.
  • Shadowlands is the afterlife for Azeroth and other worlds.
  • The Kyrian are souls that have come from Azeroth and other worlds that are now proved worthy of the system. They work their way up from aspirant to becoming ascended and earning their wings. This is a very long process, but they see it through the lens of the covenant as a process of purifying themselves and going through these monastic rituals.
    • Each afterlife that we're visiting in the Shadowlands has a similar process that the souls go through.
  • We'll explore Vol'jin's story in the Shadowlands.
  • Torghast is an example of how all the disciplines on the WoW team come together to tell a story.
  • You will never see the same thing twice in Torghast.
  • The amount of times you will be able to enter the Tower per week remains to be seen.
  • In Bastion, the owl guys are native beings of the Shadowlands, they're creatures of death.
  • Shadowlands is a mix of native creatures and the souls that come in to undertake some role within the Shadowlands.
  • They like the idea of certain races not having access to every class, new class combinations are just a matter of what feels right at the time.
  • We'll see characters reactions in the wake of N'Zoth's defeat in Patch 8.3.
  • Allied Races are still on the table for the new expansion, they just want to add them when they make sense. BfA was about Allied Races, because both factions needed reinforcements.

Still wondering if we're ever going to do anything about that giant sword in silithus, and all the azerite bleed that's as far as I know still coming out as a result of it?     You know, the main reason the whole BFA thing started?     Are we just going to say "Ok, well we need to fix azeroth's heart by collecting azerite with the heart of azeroth and...um...oh there's an old god, let's use the heart of azeroth with other Titan tech to blast it to smithereens!   Yay it worked, the world is saved!   (wanders off)."

That's my point though, the whole goal of the expansion (at the start) was to heal Azeroth Titan/Planet from the Giant sword stuck in her, making her bleed Azerite.    That Azerite started bleeding up everywhere, and instead of using it to heal her some unscrupulous types (mostly goblin) started using it for weapons.

Somehow we deviated from that mission into killing a quasi old God in Ghuun (unrelated to Azerite problem but w/e), warring with each other (also unrelated except azerite started it), fatty mcpirate's bad ideas along with the witches, blood trolls, sethrak etc (also all unrelated).    Finally we went to Asharra's place where she used the Azerite we collected to free Nzoth, and then it looks like we're going to go kill Nzoth (also also unrelated to the actual problem of the giant sword and the azerite bleeding out).

What I'm saying is, at the end of the day we still have this giant sword impaling Azeroth from space, causing her to bleed this azerite blood out, which is apparently a precious enough substance to go to war over...and nothing at all was resolved?

8.3 isnt even out yet.  We have no idea how it will truly end.

I just hope they will not use the legion end , use all the power in the artifact to heal the whole thing and make an excuse for the neck not being in the next xpac. i will be disapointed yet again if it happen.

Sure, it's possible something will address this, but datamining has only shown N'zoth as the way we use (and break before next expansion) the neck?    The giant sword hasn't been talked about since BFA's launch, and Azerite has only been a tangential topic for all of the stories, IE using the neck to free/kill nzoth or absorb azerite/get essences.     I'd be a bit disappointed if the plot is hand-waved "By killing the last of the Old Gods, something something the (unrelated) sword wound will begin to heal because reasons!".

"because reasons" is pretty vague.  Especially considering most of the people on Azeroth working on it (cenarion circle, shamans) have no idea how to actually fix it or what its all doing to the planet.

Removing something that size from earth wouldnt be a 2 year deal.  Other things would go by while people are working on that problem.

It seems pretty logical to me that its not just the single thing that people stare at all day while the entire death realm opens up above ICC, when they have no idea how to truly fix it yet.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
