Millenium Patch 8.3 Interview with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas

Recommended Posts

40123-forbes-interview-with-ion-hazzikos

Millenium recently talked to Game Director Ion Hazzikostas about Visions of N'Zoth and we learned that there will be no Patch 8.3.5. We found out the reason why they do not want to implement account-wide Essences, and what the team is trying to accomplish with the Corrupted Items system.

Interview Highlights

  • The way they manifest N'Zoth's power is different from Sargeras. He's not going to plunge a sword into the planet. Instead, N'Zoth will try to subvert the minds and the wills of all living creatures on the planet and his ultimate goal will be to transform Azeroth into Ny'alotha, the nightmarish, alternate future of Azeroth.
  • Essence requirements have been reduced on the PTR and some reputation tokens have been made account-bound in Visions of N'Zoth.
  • Account-wide access to World Quests, Islands or Siege of Boralus are in place because they do not want to force players to go through the same process of unlocking access to content.
  • Essences, however, build core player power and they are not that different from trinkets and items, so the dev team is frankly "unwilling to cross the line" and make them account-wide, but they are aware of certain inconsistencies in the system that will affect the development of similar systems going forward.
  • Corrupted Items are experimental and specific to Visions of N'Zoth. The devs wanted to get rid of Warforging and Titanforging for a while because both undermined the value of item level based on player feedback. The system, however, will not be directly transitioned over to Shadowlands in its current iteration.
  • Ion does not think that Corrupted Items will be more RNG-based than Warforging and Titanforging, because there is a limit on how many Corrupted pieces you can wear, because of the nature of the Corruption stat itself, unlike Warforging and Titanforging, where it affects all slots except for Azerite Armor slots.
  • Ion believes the Awakening affix has multiple obelisk locations to ensure variety.
  • The story of the Emerald Dream and Emerald Nightmare will continue in Ardenweald.
  • They currently have no plans for Patch 8.3.5, just system updates before Shadowlands. Visions of N'Zoth is the concluding chapter of Battle for Azeroth.
  • Things that require more skill generally require less time and they try to offset that by giving various rewards to a wide array of playstyles.

Whelp, there goes all the fan-theories about 1 last pair of allied races coming in. AH WELL.

Fortunately, it's not going to be a year-long end patch unlike many other previous expansions.

No more allied races, no story resolution (the Giant Sword is still there along with all the Azerite spewing out...you know, the all important reason we started the war...)

And that Dec 31st on or before is haunting, last time they had a future date it was Sept/Oct iirc, but now they're sticking it at the end of the year.     We could be in for a very long drought

I think you missunderstand that strategy. Blizzard is doing that as part of "Year of the Dinosaur" (YoD)™. The goal is that as many as possible players can farm their beloved 5 million gold dinosaur and that those who got it allready just support them doing so by buying all stuff from the auctionhouse.

Think about that. This is the real reason, not heavy work of programmers or artists. ?

On or before Dec 31 does not necessarily mean the game will be out in December. I think they will be aiming for a late summer release and August 2020 seems more plausible. Look what happened with Warcraft III Reforged. The release date got postponed and it was supposed to be out on or before Dec 31, so maybe they did not want the same to happen to Shadowlands.

I think we can expect Shadowlands F&F Alpha within the next two months or so.

Because you know every single story beat of every single quest from now until Shadowlands, up to and including the 9.0 prepatch.

He said 8.3 is the last major patch to BfA. Not that we will kill N'Zoth and sit on our hands until Shadowlands drops. You have no idea what the immediate future brings.

I will give tou that allied races are out of the cards, but its not like we don't have enough to play with.

No plans for 8.3.5 patch, which is when some aftermath could fit in, so we will probably do exactly that. Kill N'zoth and wait for 9.0.

That's still pretty early, considering we've been told it's far from ready. August would be 10 months since announcement, not that long in this case, I think autumn seems very probable, like october or november.

Just a reminder, BFA had a preorder launch date of "On or before September 21st".    It Launched August 14th...not too far from that launch date, and most would agree that it could have used the full duration given the terrible bugs/balance state at launch.    It's possible the Dec 31st date is a change for the sake of saying "sometime this year" but at the same time there's a lot to be argued for a holiday 2020 release period too.

You're assuming we know everything that goes on in 8.3, everything that happens in the 9.0 prepatch, and that the prepatch is a long ways off. The truth is, we know none of those things for certain. Negative for negative's sake does nothing for anyone.

Not in the slightest bit interested in new expansion at all.

Might change my mind if they sack the design team responsible for BFA and replace them with designers/devs who actually play the game. As it stands, the game is like a Korean grindfest, without the P2W and incredibly boring and pointless.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

How to Get the Spirit of Eche'ro Mount
      1. Download MapCoords or some other add-os that displays coordinates in the game.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
