Return to Azeroth: Catching Up At Level 120

Recommended Posts

If you're returning to World of Warcraft and would like to give Visions of N'Zoth a try, Blizzard has posted a blog post with highlights on how to unlock Essences, Wrathion's Legendary Cloak that helps you in Horrific Visions, and the Corrupted Items system that replaced Warforging and Titanforging in Patch 83.

Now's also a good time to level up alts. Blizzard has activated a buff on live servers that increases Experience gains by 100% through April 20.

Life has a way of catching up to you, but if you’re just returning to your level 120 character after a hiatus and want to catch up on the latest content, then this brief guide is for you.

CARRY ON, WAYWARD SONS AND DAUGHTERS

It’s not too late to join in the fight against N’Zoth and his minions. If you’ve left a level 120 character behind, it’s easy to catch up on all the latest adventures in Azeroth.

When you log in with your level 120 character, you’ll automatically receive the quest “The Wolf’s Offensive” (Alliance) or “The War Chief’s Order” (Horde) to sail to Nazjatar. There, you’ll establish your base and set up a portal to Dazar’alor (Horde) or Boralus (Alliance).

UNLOCKING ESSENCES

With your hub is established, you’ll be called upon by Speaker Magni Bronzebeard to join him at the Chamber of Heart. Through his series of quests, you’ll open the Heart Forge, allowing you to infuse Essences into your Heart of Azeroth, which grants new combat related-powers.

Once you’ve collected a new Essence—obtained by participating in a wide variety of content—the Heart Forge will allow you to “learn” the Essence, permanently adding it to your collection. Much like Talents, once you’ve learned an Essence, you’ll be able to apply it or swap it out through a new Heart of Azeroth interface within rest areas, cities, or when using items such as the Tome of Quiet Mind.

The first Essence you’ll infuse the Heart of Azeroth with is The Crucible of Flame (Rank 1). Once you reach Heart of Azeroth level 54, you’ll receive a new quest from Kalec within the Chamber of Heart to upgrade to Rank 2 of this Essence. Accessing the Heart Forge will also show you all the available Essences for your class and how to get them.

GET YOUR CLOAK!

To take on N’Zoth and his virulent corruption, you’ll need to make sure you’re geared up to resist his insidious grasp, face off against his minions, and ultimately delve into Ny’alotha, the Waking City. Check out our previously published step-by-step guide to getting your legendary cloak, Ashjra’kamas, Shroud of Resolve, which begins with either the quest “Return of the Black Prince” (Horde) or “An Unwelcome Advisor” (Alliance).

CORRUPTED GEAR

As a part of earning your new legendary cloak, you’ll also begin earning Corrupted gear from completing Assaults, quests, and other activities in Azeroth. This gear has powerful benefits—but at a cost. Without your legendary cloak, the toll can be heavy, and the costs could end up outweighing the benefits. Finding the right balance for you can make the difference between success or failure.

HORRIFIC VISIONS

Once you’ve obtained your legendary cloak, you’ll work with Wrathion to open a gate to N’Zoth’s Horrific Visions.

Horrific Visions are instanced challenges for 1 to 5 players that give you a glimpse at the twisted future N’Zoth has in store for Orgrimmar and Stormwind. While experiencing a Horrific Vision, your sanity will be under constant attack, increasing the instance’s difficulty—and forcing you to leave before you’re consumed by insanity.

THE HEART OF CORRUPTION – NY’ALOTHA, THE WAKING CITY

Once you’ve completed the series of quests with Magni, he’ll task you with taking the plunge into the ultimate heart of corruption—the raid dungeon, Ny’alotha, the Waking City—to defeat N’Zoth. You’ll need to have an item level of at least 410 to enter the Raid Finder.

BOOSTING UP AND FACING N’ZOTH

If you boost a character to level 120 and already have existing characters on your account, you’ll automatically earn any account-wide achievements when you first log in to your newly boosted character.

You’ll also automatically receive the quest “The Wolf’s Offensive” (Alliance) or “The War Chief’s Order” (Horde) to sail to Nazjatar.

If you’re looking to jump right into the action, you can ignore the “The Call for Allies” quest and any additional quests into the zones. You can return to these later.

Once you’ve established your base of operations in Nazjatar, you’ll be able to begin the quest line with Magni Bronzebeard to unlock the Heart Forge and Essences, as well as Assaults, the legendary cloak, Corrupted gear, and the new Horrific Visions.

JUST SHY OF LEGENDARY HERO

If you’re not quite at level 120 yet, don’t worry—we’re providing a +100% experience boost from March 20 to April 20, 2020 to help you. This experience boost will also stack with Heirlooms.

There are also plenty of helpful guides with information on getting to 120 quickly so you can join in the latest content in Battle for Azeroth. There are many different catch-up mechanics and resources near at hand to get you up and running in no time.

It’s a great time to join your friends in Azeroth as we prepare to take on the next World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands, coming in 2020. Join the discussion on the forums.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
