Big Shaman Shadowlands Class Changes: June 10th

Recommended Posts

We have some upcoming massive elemental and enhancement shaman changes coming up on the Shadowlands Alpha, from Searing Totem being removed as baseline, Rockbiter has been removed from enhancement, and a huge amount of changes are being made to the majority of abilities for the to DPS specs, as well as several enhancement talents being renamed and reworked.

Blizzard LogoShaman Changes (source)

In an upcoming build of Shadowlands, several changes have been made for both of the DPS Shaman specializations.

One quick note before discussing the specific changes to each spec, Searing Totem Searing Totem is being removed as a baseline button to all Shaman. Searing Totem Searing Totem was brought back in Shadowlands with the intention of Totems being a cool and iconic part of the Shaman class, but without significant redesign to the button to give it mechanical interaction and feeling impactful to press, it wound up feeling like just another cooldown you had to manage that didn’t have any excitement behind it.

Elemental Shaman:

The changes above should make Elemental Shaman feel quite a bit more control over what will happen as the result of pressing their abilities.

Enhancement Shaman Core Ability Changes:

  • Rockbiter Rockbiter has been removed from the spec.
** This is a big change we’re trying out. Rockbiter Rockbiter in Shadowlands basically only serves as a GCD filler. With the removal of  Maelstrom, and Flame Shock Flame Shock and Frost Shock Frost Shock becoming class-wide abilities that are also on a short cooldown to fill empty spots, there was a lot of competition in the ~6 sec cooldown space of available buttons. Without Maelstrom, Rockbiter Rockbiter didn’t have any strong interaction with the rest of the Enhancement toolkit, and shock spells are much more iconic to Shaman. This is an experimental change, please try things out in combination with the changes below and let us know how things feel.
  • Lava Lash Lava Lash is now learned at level 11, down from level 22. Base cooldown increased to 18 sec (was 12 sec)
  • Lava Lash Lava Lash now gets upgraded at level 22 to have its cooldown reduced to 12 sec (was 18 sec)
  • Stormstrike Stormstrike ’s cooldown has been reduced to 7.5 sec (was 9 sec)
  • Maximum Maelstrom Weapon Maelstrom Weapon stacks have been increased from 5 to 10.
  • Each stack of Maelstrom Weapon Maelstrom Weapon now grants increased damage and/or healing to the abilities Maelstrom Weapon Maelstrom Weapon effects in addition to the cast time reduction.
  • Abilities that are altered by Maelstrom Weapon Maelstrom Weapon have had their baseline damage or healing values reduced.
  • Stormbringer Stormbringer no longer causes your next Stormstrike Stormstrike to not incur a cooldown.
  • Feral Spirit Feral Spirit now grants one stack of Maelstrom Weapon Maelstrom Weapon immediately when pressed, and an additional 5 stacks over the duration of Feral Spirit Feral Spirit.
  • Each target that you hit with Chain Lightning Chain Lightning now both increases the damage of, and reduces the cooldown of your next Crash Lightning Crash Lightning .
  • Windfury Totem Windfury Totem radius increased from 12 to 30 yards.
  • Windfury Weapon Windfury Weapon and Flametongue Weapon Flametongue Weapon no longer require you to click the button, then click a weapon on your character sheet. They automatically apply their effects to an appropriate equipped weapon.
  • Lightning Shield Lightning Shield now has a 50% chance to grant you a stack of Maelstrom Weapon Maelstrom Weapon when it deals damage to an enemy.
  • Flame Shock Flame Shock and Frost Shock Frost Shock have their cooldowns shortened with your current Haste.

Enhancement Shaman Talent Changes:

The above changes to Enhancement Shaman are a lot to take in, but we feel that the combined list of changes will make your abilities feel like they have a purpose and interact with your toolkit in meaningful ways instead of just dealing damage.

Why not just remove Chain Lightning for Enhancement? Since we already have an AoE spell, plus it synergizes better with Stormstrike

Why would they remove it? What do you want to spend maelstorm stacks on in aoe situation?

Overcharge (talent) redesigned and renamed to Fire Nova. 15 sec cooldown. Cause all of your Flame ShockFlame Shocks to erupt in flames, dealing Fire Damage to up to 6 targets near your Flame ShockFlame Shock Targets

Oh baby! I was just telling my fellow friends how fire nova should be back as a talent option!

Sucks to see searing totem gone, shame they couldn't make it anymore interesting... but oh well. Pretty neat how these talents change the rotation in one form or another, and how they are changing chain lightning interacts with Crash lightning. But now I'm curious if maelstrom weapon just stacks by 10% for a total of 100% at ten stacks or is it still the 20% with 200% at ten stacks? I'm gonna guess the latter since haste will effectively increase the amount of stacks during combat much like pre-legion days!

Anywho I'm excited, this effectively gives enh more AoE options outside of crash lightning and cleave, very exciting stuff!

I really like the look of these Enhancement changes and I hope Blizz keeps going with stuff like this. Searing Totem would have been weird so I'm glad its gone, hopefully Hunter gets their useless baseline abilities removed next.

I'm excited to see Enhancement get back to how it used to be.  I am hoping that we see the return of Lava Lash spreading flame shock for aoe purposes, I miss the days when both shaman dps specs were aoe monsters and still did respectable single target.  I also wouldn't mind seeing the return of the 100 yard aura that gave everyone haste and mastery.

Was hoping for a second they were going to make retail shamans be able to tank raids ? seeing so many changes I got excited for a second ?

Same here! Or allow some mechanic to have flame shock hit multiple targets much like the new Hailstorm talent!

Not even close, converting a pure dps melee spec into a tank spec may cause a divide. Besides, they tried giving enh shamans tools that allowed for some sort of tanking in MoP and older expansions, but it never works out. Unless the next future expansions introduce a fourth a spec for shamans, enh will never be tanks.

This was very misleading in the title. Nothing changed for restoration shaman, just like every patch and expansion since who knows when.

The first sentence immediately says which specs are covered, which is visible on the frontpage, and so did the social media posts. We try to keep the titles shorter if possible, this was done for all the class changes, sorry if it mislead you.

Did they forget resto shaman or what ??? Same crap all through legion and BFA. I bet resto shaman will stay the same and be behind even bad players playing paladin/druid/monk/priest, like it has been since legion.

We have another triple entry in the hotfix ledger, as Radiant Echoes gets more improvements in retail, while Season of Discovery and Cata Classic get additional class changes.
       August 7  (Source)
      Player-characters
Steady Flight should no longer be removed after entering an Arena. Quests
We tuned up the Prototype Shredder MK-03 so that “Eye for an Eye” can be completed. Radiant Echoes Event
Increased Flightstone and upgrade Crest drop rates in the event. Reduced the HP scaling on all event bosses so that they should be killable in a more-reasonable timeframe. Developers’ notes: This includes both ‘minibosses’ (e.g. Hogger, Thorim) and final bosses (e.g. Remembered Onyxia, Ragnaros). Season of Discovery
Hunter Heart of the Lion once again has a 100 yard range. Warrior The Focused Rage rune will now correctly reduce the cost of Meathook by 3. Cataclysm Classic
Fixed an issue where Faerie Fire did not deal intended amounts of threat when used on NPCs targeting another unit.

Due to a bug introduced with the War Within pre-patch, some players are receiving item level 250 gear from the weekly cache.
We've seen numerous reports on Reddit and the official forums that the Last Hurrah weekly quest on live servers drop low-level gear for some players. Apparently, the bug was first introduced with the War Within pre-patch two weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed.
Here's an example of a low item level drop from the Cache of Awakened Treasures by Omnifox.

Week 2 brings quite a few changes, as Hunters in particular rise up, while Shadow has a really bad time. The top 3 remains the same and very consistent, so let's jump in and see what's going on.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
The top 3 remains quite stable with the Evoker-Paladin-Warrior trio reigning supreme. We see the first change of the week right after that though, as Frost DK continues its upward march in dungeons as well as in raids, taking 4th from Elemental. Both DKs are on the rise, as Unholy also moves a spot up, taking advantage of Shadow's precipitous 5-spot fall to the bottom of the top 10. Arms remains stable as two Hunters burst in, Beast Mastery taking 8th and Marksmanship 9th, as Frost Mage disappears down towards the bottom. Speaking of the bottom, Devastation gets some new roommates there, as Outlaw and Destruction fall and give Enhancement and Feral a break.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
As with the top percentiles, the top 3 remains solid, but 4th is immediately changed, thanks to Shadow's massive drop in performance this week. The Priest loses even more ground here, falling 9 spots into 13th, opening 4th up for Arms. Beast Mastery moves even higher here, grabbing 5th and moving in front of Elemental and Frost DK, as Marksmanship brings up the rear and completes the Hunter sandwich in 8th. Affliction breaks into the top 10, just ahead of Unholy which dropped to the final spot.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Frost DK finds itself on top in the raw DPS rankings, as Augmentation isn't calculated properly here. Fury and Arms grab the next two spots, moving ahead of Ret, and the Fyr'alath wins continue in 5th, where Unholy finished the legendary axe streak. Even Survival joins the Hunter good times in 8th, where all three specs gather, just ahead of Balance who closes out the top 10.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides (updated for the pre-patch), as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

MoP Remix characters that will transfer over to retail will receive a gear boost!
With Patch 11.0.2 now live on Public Test Realms, you can copy over MoP Remix characters from retail! It appears all MoP Remix characters will receive a character boost so you can dive straight into action when the War Within expansion launches.

We can't unfortunately log in to the game with the MoP Remix char on the PTR so we can't confirm the Item Level of gear for max level characters. However, keep in mind that the gear boost will scale with your level, so if you're below max cap, you will receive gear appropriate to your current level.
When Can We Expect MoP Remix Characters to Transfer to Retail?
MoP Remix ends on August 19, so we assume the characters will need to be transferred to retail by August 22 when Early Access begins.
