Heroes of the Storm Live Patch Notes: September 8th

Blizzard has released a new patch for Heroes of the Storm with D.Va, and Gazlowe reworks, ARAM mode, a new Nexus Anomaly, and Hero skins.

There's only one small difference between PTR and live notes. Gladiator's Medallion (the new Nexus Anomaly) now occupies slot 6 on the action bar.

Senior Game Designer David Warner recently talked about the D.Va rework, and we also previewed new tints, skins, and mounts from the latest press kit

Nexus Anomaly

  • New Nexus Anomaly - Gladiator's Medallion
    • Heroes now start the game with a new item on their action bar in slot 6, the Gladiator's Medallion.
    • The Gladiator's Medallion can be activated to become Unstoppable for 1 second.
    • The cooldown is 300 seconds (5 minutes).
    • Deathwing and Gall do not start with a Gladiator's Medallion.
    • All 3 of The Lost Vikings gain the effect of the Medallion when activated.

Developer Comment: Our goal for the Gladiator's Medallion is to give players more opportunities to commit to aggressive plays and relieve some of the helplessness felt when players get stuck in long CC chains.

General

  • Introducing ARAM Mode
    • With the Patch H.52, we're replacing Heroes Brawl mode with the new ARAM - All Random All Mid mode.
    • ARAM mode key features:
      • The map pool for ARAM mode consists of four one-lane maps.
      • There are no additional objectives on the ARAM maps: destroy the enemy's Core to win.
      • As match starts, every player must pick one out of three randomly selected heroes. Think fast: you have only 30 seconds!
      • Hearthstones are disabled, and starting area does not regenerate health.
      • Unlike Heroes Brawl, there's no dedicated Weekly Quest exclusive to this mode. Instead, ARAM games contribute to Daily Quests and Special Event Quests progress.

Storm League

Seasonal Quest Line win requirements have been reduced in Season 4.

  • Steps and Rewards in Season 4 of 2020
    • 5 Wins: Craft Wars Chest
    • 10 Wins: Rare Craft Wars Chest
    • 20 Wins: Epic Craft Wars Chest
    • 35 Wins: Tamed Ravasaur Mount
    • 35 Wins: Eligibility for End of Season 4 Rewards and Grand Master Leaderboards
  • Storm League Reward Mounts
    • The final reward of the 2020 Season 4 Questline will be the Tamed Ravasaur Mount, which will be awarded after winning 35 games in Ranked Play.
Developer Comment: Upon reviewing the time commitment required on average for players to obtain seasonal quest rewards, we’ve made the decision to lower the requirements from 50 games to 35 games. We believe the lowering of this requirement should help Storm League to be more approachable to a larger portion of players, as they will not have to devote as much time each season to obtain their rewards.

Heroes Rework: D.Va

Base

  • Mech Mode
    • Health increased from 2150 to 2250.
    • Health Regeneration increased from 4.48 to 4.69.
    • Base damage reduced from 26 to 23.
    • Added functionality: Enemies close to D.Va’s Mech take 50% bonus damage.
  • Pilot Mode - Big Shot
    • Ability now available baseline.
    • Cooldown increased from 4 to 6 seconds.
    • Call Mech cooldown reduction reduced from 8 to 5 seconds.
    • Damage reduced from 200 to 150.
    • Added Functionality: Enemy Heroes hit are slowed by 25% for 1.5 seconds.
  • Mechanized Walker [Z]
    • New Functionality: D.Va’s Mech can move while attacking. While attacking or channeling an ability, the Mech’s speed is quickly reduced by 25%.
  • Boosters [Q]
    • Cooldown increased from 9 to 10 seconds.
    • Duration decreased from 2 to 1.75 seconds.
    • Speed bonus decreased from 125% to 115%.

Developer Comment: At long last, our favorite Pro Gamer is back and ready to pwn teh n00bs! With D.Va's rework we've given her tons of new tools and redistributed her power to help her fill more of a traditional bruiser role while still retaining a lot of her "supporty" essence. This new talent tree should allow her to flex to fill gaps in your team comp or to be her old aggro self. Her old Heroic option, Big Shot, is now baseline and has been replaced with Micro Missiles, giving her Mech some reach and soft CC that she didn't have before.

      • Adjusted Functionality: Basic Attacks increase Gazlowe’s Armor by 10 for 10 seconds, up to a maximum of 30. Basic Attacks deal 50% more damage to Stunned or Slowed targets.

      • Added Functionality: Each enemy Hero hit reduces the cooldown of Grav-O-Bomb by 12 seconds.
    • It’s Raining Scrap [Q]
      • Adjusted Functionality: Reduce the Scrap cost of Rock-It! Turrets by 1. Regain 2 Scrap for each Scrap pickup.
    • (New) Bomb Toss [E]
      • Xplodium Charge launches 2 more bombs when it detonates.
Developer Comment: Our resident one man wrecking crew is receiving a fairly large revamp, designed to fully embrace him as a formidable Bruiser, acting as a front-line member of his team who specializes in disruption and zone control. He now sports a new resource system with Scrap, as well as some design changes to both Deth Lazor and Xplodium Charge, which should make them more consistently useful throughout the course of the game. We had a blast tinkering with our favorite Goblin, and hope you also enjoy what we’ve done with him!

Alarak

Base

Developer Comment: Alarak has fallen off a bit due to a few rounds of nerfs that have happened to him over time. We’re giving him back some power via his general survivability as well the initial damage bonus that Negatively Charged gives when taking the talent.

Cassia

Talents

  • Level 7
    • Surge of Light [Active]
      • Damage reduced from 250 to 240.
      • Damage taken amount required to activate increased from 500 to 650.
Developer Comment: Surge of Light continues to dominate Cassia’s Level 7 talents, and has become a prime reason to take the hero. In addition to reducing its damage slightly further, we’re also reducing its frequency by increasing how much damage she is required to take before she is able to use the ability.

Chromie

Talents

  • Level 1
    • Deep Breathing [W]
      • Damage bonus reduced from 1.5% to 1% per stack.
      • Cooldown reduction upon quest completion reduced from 5 seconds to 4 seconds.
      • Mana cost upon quest completion changed from 30 to 40.
  • Level 5
    • Mobius Loop [W]
      • Damage bonus reduced from 50% to 30%.
      • Slow duration reduced from 1 second to .75 seconds.
Developer Comment: Our goal with Chromie’s recent changes was to present a viable alternative to Once Again the First Time, which we succeeded at a little too well. Chromie’s W build is overall too powerful, so we’re toning down its related talents to be more appropriate.

Deckard

      • Cooldown increased from 10 to 20 seconds.
Developer Comment: After a slew of buffs over the years we finally crossed the threshold of making Ruby not only competitive, but too powerful of a pick. We’re reverting our last buff to the talent that pushed it over the edge so that the tier is overall in a healthier place.

E.T.C.

      • Heroic cooldown reduction reduced from 8% to 6%.
Developer Comment: Overall E.T.C.’s talents are in a much healthier place after our last round of changes to them, but Encore stood out as being a little bit too powerful, so we’re reducing its cooldown reduction to be more in line.

Imperius

      • Damage reduced from 180 to 165.
      • Shield amount reduced from 300 to 275.
Developer Comment: While Imperius is a great addition to any team and is within our bounds of overall performance, Flash of Anger is dominating its tier and has become too much of his power pie.

Orphea

      • Bonus damage reduced from 20% to 15%.
  • Level 7
    • Mind Devourer [E]
      • Damage per enemy Hero hit increased from 4 to 5.
      • Maximum bonus damage reduced from 160 to 150.

    • Abyssal Symbiosis [W]
      • Shield amount reduced from 180 to 170.
  • Level 16

      • Damage reduced from 95 to 90.
Developer Comment: Our last round of buffs have done a lot to bring Orphea into the meta. A few of her talents are simply too powerful compared to their alternatives, so we’re toning them down as well as trying to incentivize players to try building around her Dread ability by making its key quest easier to complete.

Stitches

Base

  • Slam [W]
    • Bonus damage to Minions and Mercenaries increased from 50% to 60%.
Developer Comment: Our previous buff to Slam did well for Stitches, but we don’t believe it was enough to give him the distinction of being a uniquely powerful wave clearing Warrior. We’re buffing it a bit further so that he is more able to fill this role.

Tassadar

Talents

  • Level 1
    • Static Charge [Q]
      • Maximum damage bonus reduced from 250 to 200.
  • Level 10
    • Archon [R1]
      • Shield amount reduced from 30% to 25% maximum Health.
      • Basic Attack damage reduced from 150 to 140.
      • Basic Attack splash damage reduced from 75 to 70.
Developer Comment: While not dominating in regards to his win rate, Tassadar is performing a little too well for how popular he is. Both Static Charge and Archon are dominating their talent tiers, so rather than nerfing Tassadar’s base kit, we’re reducing the power of these two talents in hopes of creating more competitive talent tiers while also slightly reducing his overall impact.

Yrel

Talents

  • Level 1
    • Dauntless [Passive]
      • Physical Armor amount reduced from 40 to 35.
Developer Comment: Dauntless is still overperforming compared to its other options, so we’re slightly nerfing its power.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where Mercenaries would not be Stunned by Haunting Wave when the Mercenary Queen and Festering Wounds talents were taken.
  • Fixed an issue where Executor's Will did not have a buff bar.
  • Fixed an issue where Trauma Trigger did not have a button.
  • Toy Train Mount - Metamorphosis Illidan, Dragonqueen Alexstrasza, Odin Tychus, and Archon Tassadar can no longer mount as a caboose on the Toy Train.

Seriously though, I am happy they changed the hotkey for the Medallion. And I already used the 6th (binded to T) for unstoppables.

I have the impression that Gazlowe's rework, while looking good on paper and playing around in Try Mode, seems a bit undertuned in some parts. From testing on Live servers with actual matches you can see that while him no longer requiring mana makes him a nasty lane bully that can put Xul and Zagara to shame, some parts of his kit have taken a massive nerf.

In specific, I feel that the Deth LazorDeth Lazor build is no longer viable unless your team has tons of CC. Since you no longer are able to hold it indefinitely, its range got greatly reduced and the enemy players can now see the laser's trajectory. Hitting it is much harder than before.

On the other side, the Xplodium ChargeXplodium Charge build seems to be the most valuable one, specially given how fast it detonates now, making Gazlowe a monster in team fights with setups using it combined with Grav-O-Bomb 3000Grav-O-Bomb 3000, which now is a much easier combo to land.

I like new Gazlowe. His lack of mana definitely lends itself best to spamming his turrets and abilities.

Scrap talents, all of them, but lifesteal, grav bomb, and turret duration. This combination of talents leads you to running circles around enemies, planting turrets and spamming your lazer while using your stun bomb defensively and to set up your own mass lazer hits. He can still stand there and melee though. Often finishing off Greymane and Ragnaros, and the burst damage with the stun+lazers it pretty large. Lili oneshots, so no healing through it. Just a hilarious way of playing him. He can also still push like crazy. So I like him as an offlaner or a 4 man with the same build. Not sure why I would ever grab anything else since that's what Rexxar or Leoric is for.

Maybe people aren't use to his new spam nature yet, but the chaos of team fights or the 1v1 both make it a capable build to land those shots. You don't charge mindlessly 1v1 but set up a small cluster of turrets ahead of time and then stun/lazer/melee burst them down. Will oneshot most enemies. As for group fighting, any team mashup will let you surround turrets and fire lasers and bombs into the crowd. Melee those who charge your backline, or you, or go into to finish kills with your melee, and take hits since you lifesteal a lot in group fights with your lazers. No one expects you to heal so much.

I'm pretty sure the lifesteal will get nerfed.

Edit: Never chase a high level Gazlowe. I've had entire teams do this. And rather than run home and get pinched, I just run to their side of the map to create distance, stun, plant turrets, lazer, grav bomb, just throw everything at them and it all lands it's hilarious. Takes them forever to get that kill, if they do. Sometimes it lets me escape since I rarely stop moving while they get stunned or pulled by grav bomb. Anyways. The amount of damage and lifesteal means enemies can't even 5v4 afterward. While those 4 were taking camps or objective in the mean time. That's the amount of time you can stall with these abilities. Best to just use someone like Valeera. Turret damage without the lazers aren't a lot, they're the key to making them work. You can also hold a lane late game versus an enemy team if they don't have enough area poke to wipe a large batch of turrets. Use the minions for turret duration, lazer anyone that dives. It pierces enemies so you can lazer a whole team. You get more scrap from that, more turrets, repeat, etc. Spam defense 101. Just, don't pick a fight with Azmodan's globes.

Yeah, in this sense he is much like the old Gazlowe. But while the new Deth Lazor build is potentially stronger, it requires more coordination with the rest of the team in order to properly land those "zaps". Like I mentioned earlier, he can no longer charge indefinitely, is locked to the direction once W is pressed and the range has been drastically reduced. While the damage output is indeed higher than before with talents that give two charges and percentage damage, you have to rely more on your team in order to hit those properly.

He does enough for me as is with the scrap spam. Means you can miss and still do a ton of damage and healing. It really is a low skill talent selection. But good goofy fun. This is what I've been using.
