Legendary Quest Line Development

I want to say with 99% confidence that this is how the legendary development went

 

Phase 1

"We need something epic.  We just had legendary daggers and a staff in last expac - what can we do?"

"Lets give EVERYONE weapons!  And make them power them up over the xpac!"

"Brilliant idea!  Let's implement Sha into them just for the fucking lore!"

"Sha-Touched!  AND we'll make them look better BY ADDING A SPECIAL SOCKET!"

"GIVE THAT MAN A RAISE!"

 

Somewhere between Phase 1 and Phase 2, Phase 1 genius quit and took his scrapbook of ideas

 

Phase 2

"Ok, let's keep powering up the weapons in Throne of Thunder!"

"Yeah, that would take some effort.  Let's just add a socket."

"A socket?  Like another special socket?  Cool idea!"

"No, like a regular socket.  Just like, ya know, just a socket like a blacksmith would use."

"Hmmm, how much work would this take?"

"Oh, none at all for us.  But the players - they have to get SIX THOUSAND VALOR!"

"SIX THOUSAND VALOR?  That's like, six weeks, isn't it?"

"Oh yes, six weeks for a socket.  That's like...25 stats per week!"

"Anyone else have any good ideas?"

"SOCKETS IT IS!"

 

Phase 3

"Ok, sockets felt a little boring.  What can we do for the reward to collecting 20 absurdly difficult to obtain Secrets of the Empire?"

"How about a gem?"

"A gem for the socket?!  BRILLIANT!"

"No, a gem for the helmet.  Like another regular gem."

"God damn it dude, you have played the game right?  Those get special meta gems."

"Oh, well lets give them a 'legendary' meta gem."

"GIVE THIS MAN A RAISE"

"Ok, so what kinda legendary meta gem?"

"Well, let's make it really awesome for some.  In fact, let's use it to FIX some of the classes like Boomkins and Shadow Priests!  This will save us a lot of time and money."

"DOUBLE THIS MAN'S SALARY YESTERDAY!"

"What about melee?  What kinda gem do they get?"

"Oh, they can just have one that does some lightning bolts or something.  That's kinda neat, right?"

"But sir, casters get periodic bursts of Bloodlust!"

"Yeah, going to stick with the 'fuck melee' theme of Mists.  Let's go with it."

 

Phase 4

"Alright guys, we have SERIOUSLY done way too much with gems and sockets.  We need a new idea.  Should we go back to the weapons?"
"Well, weapons are really good.  Do we want to give them the tools they need to beat the bosses of SoO right away?"

"Well, I think that some of them are still collecting their Titan Runestones"

"Titan Runestones?  What happened to Secrets?"

"Oh, we put in a new drop, you know, pre-emptively for our next item."

"Hmm, what should we use."

"Hey, we had these like, you know, aspects or something, kinda like in our best raid, Dragon Soul!  What if we like, used the new aspects and implemented them?"

"Aspects?  Those are gone.  We do have the guardians of Pandaria.  We kinda explored them early on but left them alone.  That's a lot of content we ignored"

"You mean that green dragon or the cute white kitty?"

"Oh YEAH!  THOSE GUYS!  Holy shit, we can TOTALLY IMPLEMENT THEM!  I play a Paladin and I think the kitty is adorbs.  I want him to be my guardian."

"Well I play a Warlock and the green dragon is totally badass."

"I don't even remember their names - does anyone remember their names?"

"THE KITTY'S NAME IS XUEN!"

"XUEN?!  I WANT THAT TO BE THE DRAGONS NAME!"

"Guys!  we need to focus on what we're giving the players for the legendary quest!  this is the end of the expansion - it needs to be LEGEN- wait for it -"

"Dude, we need to nerf Cloak of Shadows."

"Did you just say cloak?"

"Yeah man, Cloak of Shadows is really over powered"

"LEGENDARY CLOAKS!  That's what we'll give them!  AND WE'LL TIE IN THE GUARDIANS OF PANDARIA!  OMG, this will look planned all along!"

"STRENGTH KITTY XUEN FOR MEEEE!"

"Well, if Xuen is taken, I guess casters can take Yu'lon.  He's the 2nd most badass."

"Hmm, that leaves agility, healers, and tanks."

"I'M A HUNTER AND I WANT ANOTHER KITTY!!"

"Well - we COULD just give the kitty to agi users too.  We did confuse them with the Darkmoon Faire Trinkets."

"It is done.  Huntards, you get another kitty."

"YAY KITTY"

"So like, we have an ostrich like thing and a big bulldozer type ox.  I'm pretty sure we should give the ox to tanks, yeah?"

"Yeah, so healers get the flamingo.  Tanks get the ox"

"Ok, so let's give them legendary cloaks!"

"YEAH!"

"So like, after they get their Runestones, we have to make Wrathion talk to them.  That'd be cool as shit.  Hashtag lore!"

"YEAH, GREAT IDEA!"

 

Phase 5

"Ok, so after Runestones, they get a cloak.  Let's make it an epic cloak."

"But, we're doing this for the legendary quest!"

"Oh, but we have this new Timeless Isle.  We have to get all the players out there to check it out.  How will we implement the new island to the new quest...."

"WE CAN FIGHT THE KITTY!"

"THAT'S A BRILLIANT IDEA!  We can fight the guardians!  HOLY SHIT, we can use them for the tier and pvp drop boss!  Now we don't even have to use this stupid Huolon model!!!  YOU ARE A FREAKING GENIUS!"

"Yes, let's make them fight every single one of them.  Then we will power their cloak up to legendary status - WITH A SOCKET!"

"You're a God damn genius, you know that?  That's brilliant.  Let's make the socket."

"Let's add some hashtag lore into the cloaks!"

"I WANT MY KITTY CLOAK TO SWIPE ENEMIES WITH ME!"

"Oh yeah, my dragon cloak can breath some dragon fire on the enemies!"

"OH MAN, MY HEALING CLOAK CAN HEAL PEOPLE!  MY DISC PRIEST WILL BE EVEN EASIER!"

"What will tanks get?"

"Ardent defender"

"Brilliant.  IT IS DONE!"

Looking back at it all, I don't remember doing much of this questline which is kind of pathetic considering it is my first legendary completed while relevant.  

 

I have fonder memories going back into MC for Thunderfury (even though I can't use it since I'm a druid) and finally getting Sulfuras. At least the extra stuff from the legendary staff in Cata made you work for it a bit.

Chill bro. Yet another person who thinks that Ghostcrawler was the sole decision maker for everything Blizzard did back then. He was just the face of the company, who all the butthurt players blamed for any nerf to their class or change to PvP they disagreed with.
